Won't install game

Note: Please do not post Personally Identifiable Information like email address, personal phone number, physical home address, product key etc.

Issue abstract: I cannot install a game I downloaded.

Detailed description: I am trying to install a game. I keep getting a message that Windows Defender is blocking it. But WinDef is itself controlled by Norton. When I try to read instructions on how to get around this, nothing in the descriptions actually appears on screen. All I want to do is permit this one installer. (Actually, two, but I’ll be happy if even one works.)

Product & version number: Where do I find that? I don’t see an “about”.

OS details: Windows 10

What is the error message you are seeing? Windows protected your PC
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.

If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them: Can’t seem to take them.

@GeorgeLeS What is the game you are trying to install? Also what version and build are you running on Windows 10? Thanks in advance.

Check your version of Norton in this settings area: Go over to the “About” tab and check there.

If Windows SmartScreen is blocking a game installation, you can often bypass the warning by clicking “More info” and then “Run anyway”. If that doesn’t work, you can temporarily adjust SmartScreen settings to allow the installation, then revert them afterward.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of how to handle this situation:

  1. The “Run Anyway” Option:
  • When SmartScreen blocks an app, you’ll see a message like “Windows protected your PC”.
  • Look for a “More info” link near the top left of the SmartScreen dialog.
  • Clicking “More info” should reveal a “Run anyway” button.
  • If you’re certain the game is safe, click “Run anyway” to proceed with the installation.
  1. Adjusting SmartScreen Settings (Temporary Solution):
  • Search for “SmartScreen” in the Start Menu and open “App & browser control” .
  • Change the SmartScreen settings from “Block” to “Warn” or “Off” .
  • Attempt the game installation again .
  • Once the installation is complete, revert the SmartScreen settings to your preferred level .
  1. Other Troubleshooting Steps:
  • Check for Unblock Option: Right-click the installer file, select “Properties,” and under the “General” tab, check for an “Unblock” checkbox and make sure it’s checked.
  • Run as Administrator: Right-click the installer and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Ensure the installer is not flagged as downloaded from another computer: Check the properties of the installer and make sure it is not flagged as downloaded from another computer.
  • Check for Third-Party Antivirus Interference: If you have other antivirus software, temporarily disable it to see if it’s interfering with the installation.
  • Check for Updates: Make sure your Windows operating system is up to date.
  • Reset Windows Defender: If SmartScreen is malfunctioning, you can try resetting Windows Defender.
  • Create a New User Account: If the problem persists, try creating a new user account and see if the installation works from that account.
  • Clean Boot: Perform a clean boot to see if any other software is interfering with the installation.
  • Submit the app for malware analysis to Microsoft: Microsoft allows software developers to submit a file for malware analysis, which can help validate the safety of the application.

George. Windows Smart Screen is an integral part of Windows Defender.

I finally figured out how to install them. The problem was simply that the popup was too narrow, so I didn’t see the spots to click that would get me to “install anyway”.

Thanks for your help.

You’re most welcome, glad to help.
