World of Warcraft and Norton Anti-virus

Hello!

Recently we purchased, installed, and are running Norton Antivirus 2009. However, its causing my game (world of warcraft) to freeze during gameplay. I can minimize the game but usually that causes some sort of error in which my graphic settings are changed to the lowest possible settings and I'm forced to restart my computer. Sometimes the error doesn't happen and I can maximize the game after minimizing and it runs for a few minutes until the next freeze.

And I've tried turning off Anti-Virus, Antispyware, Intrusion Prevention, Email Messaging Scanning, and Advanced Protection as well as turning on Silent Mode for Norton but thats not helping.

Hi jpw,

Are you seeing any suspicious entries in the logs. You can get to the logs by click the "History" link on the main page.

Shane.

I actually don't play too much. The problem occurs very rarely in the old Azeroth zones.

But I can't make it five minutes in Northrend without it freezing.

1 minute per hour might be a little too casual for my tastes though. ;)

Nothing suspicious. Its filled with a bunch of info related updates.

Nothing during times in which these freezes happen.

Never had this problem myself with WoW and Nav 2009 but do remember one time when I suffered with your symptoms and it turned out to be due to my defrag running at sametime. Easy way to check is to shut down all unneeded processes and see if it makes a difference.

The same exact thing has been happening to me.  This issue only started after I installed norton antivirus.  The game will randomly freeze up, and in the process, using up 100% of my cpu.  After closing world of warcraft, my cpu usage goes back to normal, but if I try to log back in without rebooting my computer, the screen will automatically freeze after the loading screen has completed.  After re-booting, everything is fine again.  Issue has happened mainly while flying in northrend or outland.  Has not occurred while in orignal content (Azeroth.)  Can happen after an hour of gameplay or 6 hours, seems to be absolutely random.  Any clue as to why this is happening?

This is what i would recommend you to do:

1. Clean and fix any errors with Ccleaner.

2. Use Ccleaner to remove any unnecessary startup applications.

3. Run a chkdsk /f and restart your computer to let it complete it.

4. Update your drivers (ESPECIALLY graphics!)

5. Make sure that you have Updated NAV, run Norton Insight, made a full scan and removed anything potentially harmful.

6. Run a good ol' defrag of the harddisk to maintain performance and error reduction.

This guide should fix most problems, please take some time to fullfill this guide and come back to us if the problem still persists...

PS. If this didn't fix the problem, try adding launcher.exe and wow.exe as exclusions. If this didn't fix it add the folder as exclusions.

Please report back.

Thanks for the tips.  I have tried all the steps listed, but the issue is still happening.  Seems that when I open up task manager, ccsvchst is using up some of the cpu with world of warcraft using up the rest.

Perhaps posting your system hardware specifications could assist?

  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Graphics Card

You can find this information using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

Start > Run > type dxdiag

Look under "System" and  "Display"

Hi

There are indications of Trojans being associated with the WOW game according to what I have seen in Google. Perhaps there are some suggestions about that in the WOW Forum. Does the game itself indicate or tell you there is a problem?
