Hello ismanager and ken 545,

The problem is due to how the Windows Service Pack Update affects the registry. This quote gives a good description:

"During the upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1, a tool called Fixccs.exe creates a series of registry keys in many locations (some of them within the Symantec registry keys) but is unable to remove them."

If you do a search on the forums for SP3 or SP1 you will find additional information, including a fix for the issue and a tool to fix the registry, however they are listed as for use with 2008 products.  The best results seem to be obtained by uninstalling your Norton Product and then installing the Service Pack. Once the Service Pack is installed, you can reinstall Norton.

--- ismanager, with your BSOD problem, you would probably have success if you can start in Safe Mode, uninstall NIS 2009, perform a restart and then reinstall NIS 2009.

If you still have issues, record your Norton activation key or create a Norton Account to store your key, then download and run the Norton Removal Tool which will completely remove ALL Norton Products.

Restart and install NIS 2009.

Also realize that the BSOD may not be due to Norton, but may also be due to an outdated driver issue.  SP3 has had some problems of it's own.

Let us know how you do.

Does anyone know if this has been resolved as far as installing the service packs with NIS installed?

The issue the ken545 is referring to applies to some versions of the 2008 products only, and, for those products, if you many ensure that you have all available LiveUpdate packages before upgrading Windows, you shouldn’t have any problems either. The symptoms of the earlier issues were lose of network connectivity and were not any crashes as well.

What do you mean?  Has their been problems with updating while NIS is installed?

Curious, as my main/rock solid machine just went BSOD upon updating to SP3 for WinXP. I had just installed NIS2009 like 6 days earlier.
