Hi. I just purchased Norton Antivirus Plus because I have Yahoo auto-redirect malware on my Mac laptop. I ran a scan and it doesn't detect it. I see that there's something called Power Erase (?) that's for Windows, but what is a Mac owner to do? And why isn't the ability to detect and erase this sort of invader already present in the antivirus software? I am also having trouble logging into my account and don't know if the malware is causing this. Sometimes I am able to log in and other times not. I don't have any issues with logging in from my phone so it's only on my laptop. I'm frustrated because I'm not finding many solutions to this discussed anywhere despite the fact that this particular malware is fairly common. Please help! Thanks
You're most welcome. Stay healthy!!
Cheers
Thank you so much (SoulAsylum) for all of your help. I found the culprit and deleted the extension. Whew! Can't thank you enough :)
Hello again. I would disable all your Safari extensions straight away. Enable them again one at a time to see what the offending browser extension is. Once found remove it and reboot your system. Run MBAM to ensure all the remnants are removed as well.
Cheers
Thanks for the post. Here is how to post a screenshot into your posts which the community can readily see. :
Open the scheduled scans tab, see if that setting is there. I suppose the MAC version is somewhat different from the PC version but I think that is where to go.
Cheers
My default browser is Safari. I had rebooted after the initial scan, before finding that the Yahoo redirect had returned. I took a look at my Malware Bytes settings, and in the version that I currently have, the trial version, I don't seem to have advanced settings like the ones you showed in your screen shot. I will include a pic of what my settings menu looks like.
Thanks again for your assistance
MBAM will clear the items it found upon reboot. Quarantine hold the issues from being resident on the system. Clear your browser caches and run Malwarebytes another run. What is your default browser?
Edited: In your MBAM settings tell it to check for Rootkits during the scan.
Cheers
Update: The Yahoo redirect is back! Ug. The Malwarebytes got rid of it and it just regenerated. This seems like a serious issue at this point. I don't know how to get rid of it permanently.
Thank you so much SoulAsylum! Malwarebytes worked! As a follow-up, can you tell me why the malware is "quarantined" rather than eliminated? I don't see any explanation or other choice of action on the Malwarebytes dashboard. I want to make sure that the bugs gets eliminated. Thanks so much :)
Hello M Halpin. Download Malwarebytes FREE, run a full scan from an admin account. See if it detects and removes this issue. MBAM will find things Norton doesn't focus on. Let us know if it helps.
Cheers
