My girlfriend dealt with this yesterday and it was scary and annoying. NIS and others pick up nothing on my machine, says it's clean.
According to the forums this thing has been around for awhile; it's some sort of weird webmail virus affecting yahoo, gmail and hotmail delivered via spam that replicates by sending the same message to most of your webmail contacts and also making it seem as if your yahoo (or gmail or hotmail) contacts have been deleted. They haven’t, according to expert forum posters; they’re in the contacts trash folder; from copious research (this happened to my girlfriend yesterday morning) on the security forums I found out that this is an ongoing problem that’s been in the wild for about two years, with many affected. Someone has posted a solution to restore contacts if you’ve been affected, although they advised to act quickly, which basically boils down to ‘look in the contacts trash folder, soon.’But none of the forums I've seen provide a cause, and whether this means one's yahoo mail account/password has been hacked, and if so, how was it hacked? Please provide info if you're aware of this. I didn't receive the email from my girlfriend's yahoo mail, perhaps it doesn't send to all contacts? Text mentions China computer equipment and "Eshop."
