This morning Norton Security displayed the above. Fix Now failed to repair the problem. There are no old versions of Chrome on my system. All the Chrome data has been cleared via the advanced settings in Chrome. Norton Utilities 16 also clears all browser data every morning when I first boot up the system. Since the Fix Now failed and there are no old Chrome files on my system I can only presume that this is just another snafu by the non-coders (my term for script kiddies) now employed by Symantec. Too bad no one wants to take the time to actually manually code and test software BEFORE releasing it for public use. This seems to be the acceptable norm these days when it would have never flown back when programmers actually wrote the code and tested it rather than the drag and drop of scripts done these days. How a drag and drop script manipulator can even consider themselves a programmer is beyond me. Then again, one upon a time tech support had actual knowledgeable individuals as the providers instead of screen prompt readers that have zero knowledge of what they are paid to provide support for.
Been there. Done that. If you had read the original post referenced when this same thing occurred a couple of years ago, you'd know that I'm a retired IT Pro that actually knows what he's doing and how to solve most IT related problems. I even double checked the entire registry to make sure nothing Google or Norton related existed after uninstalling all the Norton software and Chrome. After uninstalling both Norton and Chrome and making sure all traces of both had been completely removed including several restarts of the system, I reinstalled Norton first and ran live update until there were no more for what should be obvious reasons. Despite doing all of that, while Chrome was being installed Norton immediately went back to making the false claim that there were outdated files left behind by Chrome. This occurred during installation so it is virtually impossible for there to be any 'outdated files' left behind. The icon hadn't been placed on the desktop nor had the installation screen finished and yet the error from Norton was there. The fact is that this exact same problem occurred nearly two years ago. The only difference being that this time uninstalling and reinstalling didn't solve the problem as it did 2 years ago. As you may or may not be aware, trying to contact either of the software companies involved is useless as they always blame the other party for the problem while claiming there's nothing wrong with their software. Oddly enough, now not even this website functions properly in Chrome. It would seem that Norton and Alphabet (Google) are once again refusing to play together well.
A quick update: This time around uninstalling and reinstalling the software does not solve the problem. In fact, as soon as Chrome is installed the same error immediately shows up in N360. I mean literally as soon as the Chrome installation process completes Norton 360 claims there are outdated files left behind by Chrome. Mind you that Chrome has ONLY been installed and NEVER opened when this occurs.
Solved the Chrome problem and it required a complete removal and reinstall of both Norton Security and Chrome. Seems that the kids were refusing to play nice with each other. Also noticed that somehow after all the updates, etc. that something turned off the Smart Firewall in Norton after one of the updates which I discovered after rebooting for the 5th or 6th time just to make sure all the updates and changes were properly dealt with and fully installed. If I'd had the time to spend I would have tried digging down into the coding to find out why the error wouldn't go away and why Chrome kept running programs when specifically told not to. However, life is short enough when you're terminally ill because you chose to defend what was then an honorable country so I chose the fastest solution - a complete removal - including ALL the registry entries - followed by a clean install.
You could say I solved my own problem. I do have a question to those Chrome users that use Norton Utilities to clean their system: Does it take sometimes hours to clean up the C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Code Cache\js junk on your system? I know that NU almost seems to hang when it reaches that folder during the privacy cleaning and even so the folder still takes up 642 MB on disk despite only being 111 MB in actual size.
Quick update. I thought I had possibly found the culprit Google programs when I ran Task Manager in admin mode and found GoogleCrashHandler 32 and 64 were both still running despite the Chrome settings being set so that they shouldn't be. After shutting them down in Task Manager and double checking the settings in Chrome, I ran the Fix Now and this time it actually deleted some files and then came right back with the same message even though it had just allegedly cleaned them up.
As for the crash handlers still running in the background as hidden processes, that's just further proof that Google is still lying about their Chrome browser behavior. You set it to not track your browsing, not run background apps when closed and not phone home to tell Google about crashes, etc. and yet you're still tracked, the background apps are still running and that implies that it's still phoning home despite being told specifically not to.
Apparently all the lawsuits and government hearings in the US and EU have had zero impression or effect on the corrupt data harvesting and distribution practices still being carried out by Google. At this point, I do not believe there will ever be a solution to the issue.
Thanks for the suggestions. They are appreciated even if they are things I have already attempted.
Having been in IT for over 4 decades, I am fully aware of the nefarious data harvesting done in the background if the above switch isn't set to off. Chrome is NOT running anything in the background because I don't trust Google or their parent company at all. They've lied too many times about how they gather user data and what they do with it. This problem didn't start until this morning when I booted up my system. Live Update is completely up to date so that is not the issue. You can see how the program is contradicting itself in this screenshot of the Details for File Cleanup when it shows that the fix is complete. Strange how the File Cleanup box shows "Complete" when the Details box shows "Fixed: 0". Something does happen when Fix Now is clicked but it isn't what should happen obviously. If an explanation and solution are not given then I will go back to Avast free until Norton figures out which script is failing and causing the Fix Now message and program contradictions. What's stranger still is that the message didn't exist at all yesterday yet when I booted the system up this morning, the Fix Now message was there even before running Live Update. Norton Utilities hadn't even begun it's startup scan also.
Been there, done that. Live Update has updated all there is to update and the error message still exists. The Fix Now button fails horribly as it shows complete on one screen and failed on the next when you click close on the one that shows it complete. In other words, there is something in the code that is producing contradictions in the program itself.
Have you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available? Maybe Norton needs a restart to complete the cleaning????
