YouTube Blocking Norton / Gen Digital VPN Connections

Hi Norton / Gen Digital Team,

I’m reporting a reproducible issue where YouTube appears to be blocking traffic from Norton’s VPN infrastructure. When the VPN is enabled, YouTube videos fail to play. Once the VPN is disabled, the videos load and play normally.

This issue appears to affect Gen Digital VPN products, including Norton’s offerings. It does not seem to be device-specific and is very easy to reproduce.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Enable Norton Secure VPN.

  2. Open YouTube and attempt to play any video.

  3. The video fails to play or does not proceed.

  4. Disable the VPN and reload the same video — it plays normally.

Other major VPN providers are currently able to access YouTube without this problem, which suggests that Norton / Gen Digital’s VPN IP ranges or infrastructure may be blocked or flagged by YouTube.

Because the problem occurs consistently across servers, it likely requires updating or rotating the VPN infrastructure/IP ranges so YouTube no longer blocks the connections.

This should be a straightforward issue for your team to reproduce internally:

  • Enable the VPN

  • Attempt to watch any YouTube video

Please investigate and update the VPN infrastructure so users can access YouTube normally while connected.

Thanks for your attention to this issue.

The Reality Check: Other major VPN providers the ones that actually prioritize their infrastructure don’t have this problem. This isn’t some complex “glitch”; it’s a failure of the Gendigital team to rotate IP ranges. You’ve let your servers rot until they’re useless, and it’s frankly embarrassing.

Do us all a favor: rotate the IPs, update the infrastructure, and try to pretend you’re a premium service for five minutes. This is a “straightforward” fix, even for you.

Fix it. Now.

@HPEnvy360 Having just logged the N360 as active and opened the main You Tube site, I was greeted with a sign-in for You Tube. Is that something you are seeing as well? Although signed in with the VPN active You Tube blocked the video of choice from playing. Disabling the VPN allowed video as advertised. Norton isn’t the issue, its You Tube doing the blocking. I am on Verizon FIOS gigabit connections via Ethernet not WiFi.

The Norton 360 VPN is Wire Guard by default and not selectable via the VPN settings as the stand-alone version is. It will also set your connection to Public, which is much stricter in security vice private.

Every other VPN I use works with YouTube without any issues, except for Norton VPN, which is consistently blocked. I’ve tested several other VPN services including Malwarebytes VPN, Mullvad VPN, and Surfshark VPN and none of them are blocked by YouTube.

This strongly suggests that the issue is specific to Norton VPN. If other VPN providers can operate without being blocked, then Norton should be able to address this as well. It seems likely that something on Norton’s end such as their IP ranges or internal configuration is causing YouTube to block their service.

If Gen Digital does not plan to resolve this issue, they should be transparent with users and simply say so. However, given that many other VPN services do not have this problem, it’s difficult to understand why this issue appears so challenging for them to fix.

I have already tried every server and troubleshooting step you can imagine. I am very familiar with how to properly use a VPN and have done everything possible on my end to resolve the issue.

Unfortunately, this appears to be something that needs to be fixed by your team, and it currently feels like GenDigital is not addressing it. A VPN should work without requiring users to create a YouTube account, especially when other VPN services do not have this issue. I’m not trying to be rude here but this is an issue that does need to be resolved. Unfortunatly yes, youtube blocked your VPN’s infrastructure but it’s also the companies responsibility being a paid service provider to remediate the issues.

I have followed all of the suggestions and troubleshooting steps mentioned above, but unfortunately none of them resolved the YouTube login issue.

At this point, it seems unlikely that the problem is on my end. I sincerely believe that GenDigital may need to take a closer look at its infrastructure, as the issue persists despite trying all recommended fixes. It’s also important to note that all Gendigital VPN’s including Norton, AVG, Avast all have these same issues.

If anyone here happens to know or can contact a staff member from this forum, I would greatly appreciate it if you could give them a ping so they can take a look at this issue. Thank you.

A VPN does not block or filter any web content. It is the website you are trying to access that is probably blocking access from known VPN IP addresses. This is done for copywrite, legal or political reasons. There is nothing a VPN provider can or should do to bypass the site’s protection for its content.

If other VPN providers feel it is OK to find workarounds to geo locks, that is their decision.

I just turned on my Norton VPN and watched several Youtube videos without any issues. I do not have a Youtube account.

I’m honestly pretty disappointed at this point. I explained the issue with YouTube blocking Norton’s VPN days ago, and there hasn’t been a single response from a Norton staff member. It really feels like support has gone downhill back in the Symantec days, issues like this would actually get acknowledged and addressed.

With my subscription expiring this month, I’m seriously considering switching to Malwarebytes, since I haven’t run into these kinds of problems with them.

Oh, well I’m glad it magically works for you that must mean the issue I’ve been dealing with for days just doesn’t exist, right? Funny how that works.

For what it’s worth, my experience has been completely different, and the lack of any response from Norton is still the real problem here. But sure, since it worked once on your end without even being logged into a YouTube account, I guess that settles everything.

Oh, I’m aware of how VPNs work thanks for the textbook explanation. That still doesn’t change the fact that this issue is happening specifically with Norton’s VPN while others don’t have the same problem.

If it were just “websites blocking VPN IPs,” then the experience would be consistent across providers, but it’s not. Some services clearly manage this better than others, whether you think they “should” or not.

At the end of the day, I’m not asking for a philosophy lesson on geo-restrictions I’m pointing out a real usability issue and the complete lack of response from Norton. That’s the actual problem here.

FWIW!! YouTube DOES actively block Norton 360 VPN connections. I have already stated that previously as well. Below is some AI information on the subject:

AI Overview

Yes, YouTube frequently blocks Norton 360 VPN by detecting and restricting known VPN IP addresses, often resulting in video playback errors or “Content not available” messages. When active, Norton VPN can cause YouTube to show errors, load in a different language, or fail to play videos, say reports on the Norton Community.

Common Issues & Solutions

  • Playback Errors: If YouTube stops working, users often find that disconnecting the VPN immediately restores access, say reports on the Norton Community.
  • Fixes: Try changing your virtual location/region within the Norton app, disabling “Ad Tracker Blocking,” or switching browser protocols.
  • Language Issues: If YouTube displays in a foreign language, it is because the VPN masks your location, causing Google to misinterpret your preferences, according to Norton Suppor

Here is the why YouTube does the blocking: We aren’t trying to give philosophy lessons with our suggestions around the forums. Just factual information we can get from the best sources available.

AI Overview

YouTube blocks Norton 360 VPN (and other VPNs) primarily to enforce geographical content restrictions (geo-blocking), prevent access to cheaper subscription rates, and abide by copyright licensing agreements. When using a VPN, YouTube detects the masked IP address as a potential threat or violation, often prompting users to turn it off to access content.

Key Reasons for YouTube Blocking Norton VPN:

  • Location Spoofing for Content: YouTube restricts certain videos to specific regions. If a VPN changes your location to access that content, YouTube may block the connection.
  • Subscription Cost Manipulation: Users often use VPNs to purchase YouTube Premium in countries with lower pricing. YouTube actively fights this to protect its regional pricing models.
  • Known IP Addresses: Norton VPN, like other popular VPNs, uses a set of known IP addresses. YouTube and its security systems can identify these IPs and blacklist them, as they are often associated with automated bots or spam.
  • Age Verification Circumvention: VPNs can be used to bypass regional requirements for ID verification for age-restricted content, leading to stricter enforcement.

How to Potentially Fix the Issue:

  • Switch Servers: Change the Norton VPN server location to a different city or country.
  • Disable VPN for YouTube: Turn off the VPN when specifically watching YouTube if it is not required for security.
  • Clear Browser Cache: Clear browser cookies and cache, as they may still be storing your masked location.

It is important to note that YouTube’s algorithms are constantly updated to identify new VPN IP addresses, making it a continuous game of cat-and-mouse.

SA
