Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

The setting has been removed but if you go to Security History and select Scan Results from the drop-down menu at the top, you will see it is still running, but it will only show the last time it ran for some reason.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Thanks Krusty,

Yes I saw it in Security History, so this is the default in Norton Security ? or this ELAM now can configure through Windows setting?

Thanks & B/regards,

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

I guess it is the default with Norton now.  There appears to be no way to disable it on Win8 + machines anymore.

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

Thanks Krusty for your reply,

Yes it's look like one times scanning, as in couple days no activation again from Norton Early Launch Mallware Scanning (I suggest if nothing change in boot driver, Norton Early Lunch Mallware Scaner didn't scanned it) and its the default setting, however I little bit confuse whether Norton scan also the BIOS/UEFI during launch, as the BIOS firmware version can update by user.

Awaiting the information about this

Thanks & B/regards,

Early Launch Anti-Malware Protection

This feature provides better protection by running all the necessary components of Norton that block malware intrusion when you start your computer.

This feature is available only in Windows 8 or later.

  https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-360/22.17.0.183/solutions/v19213678_ns_retail_en_us

My guess, it does not scan the BIOS/ UEFI.  I think it mainly scans for rootkits and other malware as the machine boots.  Perhaps I'm wrong on that though.

Maybe someone else in the Community has more detail to share.

It should run on every system start / restart though.  But only the last scan result is shown in Security History.

Edit:  Here's some information from Microsoft  -  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/install/early-launch-antimalware

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

If I look to View Recent History in the Scan Result, there only one time activity of Norton Early Lunch Mallware Scanning (on 08/04/2019 and nothing activity on the last two days after that, please see on screenshot).

We hope from Norton can explain about my question, "Why no activity in recent two days from Norton ELAM"/is it Norton ELAM not properly to seat during boot time?.

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

Do you happen to have Fast Startup enabled?  Maybe, just another guess, but perhaps that could have something to do with it because it isn't really shutting your machine down, it's a hybrid hibernation.

We generally recommend disabling Fast Startup as it can interfere with Norton and other programs.

Hello HANDJOJO.TAN

Would the Aggressive  under Boot Time Protection not accomplish the same thing?

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-security/22.17.0.183/solutions/v36662094_

Settings>Antivirus>Automatic Protection>Boot Time Protection>Move slider to Aggressive>Apply on Bottom.

It won't say anything in the Scan Results, but I assume it does start the scanning earlier.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

HANDJOJO.TAN:

Dear Krusty,

Nothing change it since 08/04, same configuration on Windows.

But that does not answer whether you have the Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. You can check using the information in Kursty13's post above.

Do you allow your computer to sleep or hibernate instead of having full shutdowns?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

Dear Krusty & Peter,

I have changed the default Windows Startup to off,  for avoid Norton Early Lunch Mallware Scan not working properly, and now seems working well, I think there are two factors probably Norton ELAM didn't working properly:

1. could be the Windows Fast Startup didn't working properly and then effected to ELAM

2. or Norton ELAM it self.

The reason is as per inform before I didn't changed anything in Windows Startup and then Norton ELAM worked (on April 08 as per inform before) however today the Norton ELAM didn't working, then after I change Windows Fast Startup the Norton ELAM working well.

We hope from Norton can investigate about this and make the simulation as per inform above (Windows Startup on or off).

Awaiting the further information from Norton.

Thanks & B/regards,

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

Dear Flotpot,

I didn't use Aggressive Boot Scan to avoid the false Positive, I think the problem from Windows Fast Startup function or Norton ELAM it self. The reason is with the Windows default Fast startup on the Norton ELAM Scan even working, and today Norton ELAM didn't worked before I change the Windows Fast Startup to OFF. I think need the further investigation from Norton to solve this phenomenon.

Hi HANDJOJO.TAN,

This problem has been around for many years. See my post from 2014 (the comment regarding Early Launch Anti-Malware scan right above Screenshot 2). And the culprit was Fast Startup.

If I look to View Recent History in the Scan Result, there only one time activity of Norton Early Lunch Mallware Scanning (on 08/04/2019 and nothing activity on the last two days after that, please see on screenshot).

Yes. That's how Early Launch Anti-Malware scan works. Security History only displays the scan results from the most recent Start/Restart of your computer. Records of previous Starts/Restarts are never retained. That's how it was back in 2014 and that's how it is now. Totally normal.

1. could be the Windows Fast Startup didn't working properly and then effected to ELAM

Because the Fast Startup feature was working correctly, your computer was not actually getting shut down. The ELAM only scans when a computer is started up after a complete shutdown. So with Fast Startup turned on, if you use the Windows shutdown command, the computer is not really shutting down. The same goes for if you allow the computer to sleep or hibernate overnight instead of completely shutting down.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

Dear Peter,

Thanks for your explanation, it's dilema for me If set Windows Fast Startup to On then Norton ELAM didn't work, however if set Windows Fast StartUp to Off then Norton ELAM work well when I start the Windows (except for restart), however cause Windows Start little bit delay.

Therefore in my Opinion Windows Fast Start Up interferer to Norton ELAM Scan process cause Norton ELAM didn't work when computer Startup/booting.

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

Fast Start Up is a totally unnecessary Windows feature, that causes more trouble than it's worth.

No-one's time is that valuable that they can't wait for X number of seconds for their PC to properly boot.

Turn it off, if you have it set to ON on your computers.

Just my 2C worth.

You are correct that the Fast Startup does interfere with the ELAM scan. But only in that the ELAM scan only runs from a completely fresh, cold start of Windows. With Fast Startup enabled, the only way you get that is if you do a restart. As soon as you use the Shutdown option, the computer only goes into a sleep/hibernate mode. Not actually getting completely shut down.

I'll add my 2 cents to F 4 E's note about Fast Startup causing more trouble than it is worth. Of course, you can always leave it on as long as you remember to do a Restart every day or so. That would get your ELAM scan, and ensure that all other software updates for your computer get fully processed.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Early Launch Antimalware Scan in Windows 10

Dear all,

After read the information and the explanations of all you, I decided to non activated Windows Fast Startup, so the Norton ELAM can working properly.

Thanks for your suggestion.
