Building of errors/issues

Norton 360 Premier Edition 21.6.0.32 Error: 8504, 104 Windows 7 Home Premium 7601.18526.amd64fre.win7sp1_gdr.140706-1506 Norton Autofix Results: 0 item(s) The above is the error I am experiencing. This happened for the first time about two hours ago, and it "resolved itself", clearly it did not. The second time it gave me this. I believe it is some kind of correlation with why my internet has been consistently randomly cutting out for unexplained intervals. When I try troubleshooting using two different kinds of connections either wireless or ethernet I typically get the message: website (www.microsoft.com) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts. (The remote computer isn't responding to connections on port 80, possibly due to firewall or security policy settings, or because it might be temporarily unavailable. Windows couldn't find any problems with the Firewall any our computer.) Obviously I have a very hard time believing that last sentence is addressing Norton and is more specifically referring to the building firewall that comes standard on systems and as it is not the one running my security it can't properly identify the issue. Thank you in advance to anyone who can give some helpful advice.

Re: Building of errors/issues

Hi AdinRhyl:

If you're still searching for a solution, the support article Error: "8504,104" appears on my Norton product states:

"This error can be caused by another security product or a threat that stops the Norton service from starting. It can also be caused by a failed install when the product is being upgraded to a newer version."

Let us know if you have ever had other security products installed on your computer that ran in real-time (e.g., McAfee, AVG, Comodo, Kaspersky, etc.).  Even if you've uninstalled these security programs from the Control Panel, orphaned registry entries and/or files can still interfere with Norton and we can provide a link to the manufacturer's removal tool to wipe the last remnants off your system.  Note that ESET maintains a list of common AV removal tools here.

If a full system scan with N360 does not detect any malware on your system, run a second-opinion scan with the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) to see if it can detect any any malware or lower-risk PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) or PUMs (potentially unwanted modifications) that might have been missed by Norton.  Decline the 14-day trial of the Premium (real-time protection) features during installation and use MBAM as an on-demand scanner.  Start with a standard Threat Scan using the default settings and move on to a full Custom Scan of all hard drives if the Threat Scan does not detect any problems.

Once you are relatively certain that malware or remnants of a previous antivirus program are not the issue, try refreshing your N360 Premium installation by running the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool as instructed at www.norton.com/nrnr.  The NRnR tool will uninstall other Norton products like Norton Utilities, Norton Ghost, etc. so please read the warning at the top of the instructions before starting the tool.  Once the NRnR tool has re-installed N360 Premium just be sure that you run manual LiveUpdates until you are fully patched and updated to the current v. 21.6.0.32.
