Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Hi all. Since firefox updated to 36.0 yesterday it is extreemly slow to start up. I know its something to do with Norton, as if I turn of my antivirus auto protect off first it starts up really fast. I then turn antivirus back on. I had  live chat with support yesterday where they took control of my computer and uninstalled then reinstalled Norton. But its still the same. Its as iff Norton is fully running a scan on all of firefox before it lets it start. (time to load 25 seconds with antivirus on. 3 seconds with it off) Any help please

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Hello

Perhaps you need a fresh install of Firefox since you already had a fresh install of your Norton product. Please make sure that Firefox 36 is allowed into your Firewall and that it is set to allow, not auto. Have you followed the instructions for Firefox in the stickies on top of the Forum?

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

I have to second this. I have already reinstalled Firefox 36.0 with no success. Also tried to start Firefox in "Safe" mode. Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect and it starts right up.

Norton is up to date. Is there a fix for this?

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Hello

Perhaps since it's a new version of Firefox, your Norton product is scanning it more carefully and other parts of Norton may be involved also. Give it a few days and see if it speeds up on it's own. Doing a Norton Insight scan might help also with speeding up things. As more users start using the new Firefox, the quicker it may work also.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Hi, all. I find the best way is to run Live Update until no more are found, and THEN download a fresh install of FF from Mozilla and over install your current version, if the internal Firefox auto update doesn't work.

I have Norton Security and FF 36 and it launches in around 5 seconds, which is par for Firefox on my desktop machine.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Open Norton (Internet Security) /Settings tab,Antivirus and SONAR Exclusions on the right pane "Items to Exclude from Auto-protect, Sonar and Download Intelligence Detection, click on Configure(+) This opens the "Real Time Exclusions" window. Clock on Add/Folders and a Add Item window opens. Click the little folder icon and find the Mozilla folders below (There may be more in your installation) and make sure the "Include subfolders" checkbox is checked. This should be only a temporary fix until Norton gets a fix out. (THIS SHOULD BE A TEMPORARY WORKAROUND... YOU SHOULD USE THIS ONLY IF IT HAS NOT RESOLVED BY UPDATES.)

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Thanks to all that have commented so far. From my research this is a problem for more than just myself. Others have stated that it seems to be when Trusteer is also installed. It seems there could be a clash between firefox, norton, and trusteer. Either way there are enough people with this problem that Norton need to look into this. Today I shutdown trusteer to see if that changed things, it did not. I have tried safe mode and turning off all addons. Only turning off the antivirus before loading firefox speeds it up. My work computer updated to firefox 36.0 today with no problems what so ever, but that is not running Norton. So I say the problem lies with Norton. If this cant be sorted soon I will have to think hard about changing my antivirus when it expires. Shame as I have been with Norton since windows 95

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

I don't know where the problem is, but I've been using Trusteer for a long time, and only recently had the slow load problem show up.  Since it gives me a very secure entry to my financial/banking institution, I have no intention of removing it.  Norton needs to track the problem down and give us a real solution.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Fairly new to this forum. But it would be wonderful if Norton themselves admitted that there are now enough people complaining about this, that they issue an official responce to say they are taking it seriously and are looking for a solution. After all our subscriptions pay their wages. Every time firefox updates Norton seem far behind others in making sure their product works in conjunction with it. Both Norton and Firefox are leading players in their field. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING.

Hello Derrick

Welcome to the Forum

As Krusty has said in the link he  has posted. Symantec is looking into the problem.. That means they are taking it seriously.

materialman,

I've notified Symantec and they have told me they will look into the issue with Trusteer Rapport + Norton slowing Firefox opening.

Cheers.

That is the quote what Krusty said in that other thread that he said they are looking into it. It will take a little time until they can provide any information. Thanks.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Hi, Derrick. What you have to bear in mind is that Firefox is open source, with a 6 week cycle.

Norton has to update the Toolbar every time, to work with the new release.

In terms of the Trusteer situation, Symantec needs to test a fix thoroughly, before releasing it to a worldwide audience using multiple systems.  Better it take a while than bork your system, wouldn't you agree ?

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Hi all. Thanks for all the comments. I do appreciate that it can't be easy. As I stated I actually love Norton as my antivirus program. I have been with them on my home computer since the days of Windows 95, a long long time ago. I have tried others to my cost. (Thought I'd save money one year and tried a free product. It let a virus in) Norton sorted me out ,so like I said I have been with it ever since. Thing is I also love Firefox as my browser. Just catches you by supprise when you open your browser in the morning. Go back into it later after the update , and bingo, you wait and wait and wait for it to load. Use to having to wait for toolbar to catch up after an update. But this situation was a first , never experienced a massive drop in start-up times with any update before. Hopefully all will be resolved soon.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

I updated Firefox a few days ago (36.0.1) and since then it has been really, really slow to start. I have Norton 21.6.0.32 and Trusteer 1404.75. Obviously I haven't been using FF since it developed this issue but while I was looking into the problem just now it caused a popup from the Microsoft Firewall that I've never seen before with FF.

Presumably the updated FF is doing or trying to do something it didn't do before but whatever it is I won't be relaxing security settings just so that FF can start up in a reasonable time.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Update - just uninstalled the identity safe toolbar - it was still there in FF (although disabled with a 'not compatible' message) even after a 'refresh' which is supposed to remove add-ons. Firefox now starts like it used to.

This is the thread that Krusty referenced earlier in this thread.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Just to add my name to this Norton problem list from the list of people on the Mozilla thread who continue to suffer this problem.

I have Norton 21.6.0.32 and Trusteer and have installed FF 36.0 and 36.0.1 . In both cases the start up time for FF was over 60 seconds and linking from another program, such as clicking a link in email, also takes over 60 seconds. My bank requires me to use Trusteer, so I won't remove that. After each attempt at FF36 or its update I have reinstalled FF35.0.1 where there is no problem at all. I'm using Win 7 and have an SSD C drive.

I watched FF36 in Task manager, FF starts and appears to use only about 3% cpu (on my 2x cpu laptop) however, the graph shows 50% of two cpus being used, so some service gets very active! after more than a minute the FF screen appears.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

Hello

I wonder if this has something to do with that .dll that ended up getting removed when FF 36 got updated? Maybe that .dll is under scrutiny with everyone's version FF36.0.1. Just a guess on my part.

Re: Firefox Extreemly slow to start

H,

This solution would open up your security so there is no security I would not recommend it as a Norton Tech. I would disable all add-ons but Norton to see if that makes a difference, if this makes no difference then I wold suggest to roll back to 35.0 and test at least until a patch comes out from Norton to address the issue.

Hi Levi,

Wouldn't downgrading to FF35 also open systems up to security vulnerabilities?

Hi all. I marked the update from Trusteer as the possible fix for our problems. I would like to just say a big thanks for all those who also took the time to post their problems. Only by doing so do some of the programme makers realise they have a problem and its not just a one off. This then pushes them into finding a solution. Many thanks.

Hi all. The problem seems to be with Trusteer this time. Before if I turned off Norton anti virus before starting Firefox it would open fast. I have just tried the same again. But this time it makes no difference. But if I disable Trusteer Firefox starts up fast again. I have sent an email to Trusteer via the Trusteer console explaining the situation. I would ask others to try turning their Trusteer off and seeing if it makes a difference. If so turn it back on and also send an email of complaint to them. Turn Trusteer off via all programs Trusteer endpoint protection. Then stop Trusteer endpoint protection. I suggest you turn it back on after doing the test. Can Firefox please put pressure on Trusteer to fix this
