Are the trialware Downloads for 1pc only ?

Just after the issue I have had with the 1pc vs 3pc license could it be made clear in the trialware section for newer users that if they have more than 1 PC they need the 3pc NIS2009/NAV/N360 Downloads.

Trial versions can be installed on any machine...

But when you click on activate, you have to choose in the Symantec Store which product you buy, and as I see now you can buy only the 3-user version.

Check this site:

Papauz

Since you know your way around there could you look and see if you have a choice of 1 or 2PC when it comes to renewing?

It's something I've been wondering about in the context of mo's extravaganza <s> and the sticky message about renewing updating etc.

Hi PapauZ

That's in the US store this link which say's global does not have the clear cut tag of up to 3 PC's

 http://shop.symantecstore.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=ContentTheme&Locale=en_US&SiteID=symnahho&ThemeID=106300&pbPage=Trialware_en_US&pgm=12858600&resid=v5hcIwoHAi4AAG%40VwL4AAAAD&rests=1239371860298

I'm not trying to be picky, just want things to be more clearer for those who don't know the things to look for when buying new software.

Re: Are the trialware Downloads for 1pc only ?

I know where you are coming from (multiple meanings <g>) and it touches on the question I asked Papauz.

Using your link I went to renewals in the left column and then selected renewal / NIS 2009 and apart from the oddity of suggesting that I might want N360 <gdr> it just says Renew my subscription

I haven't gone further than that point but since there is only one price given it would seem that someone with the 1PC veresion who renews like that and, as stated by Staff, gets the 1PC renewal is paying relatively more than the person renewing a 3 PC version.

It would seem to be a good idea, from a marketing POV and at little or no cost for all renewers to get the 3PC KEY.

OK, so trials are working this way: you can install it on any number of computers, as it is working only for 15/30 days (it can be "activated" only once, you need to reinstall your windows and then install the trial again to be able to get an another trial period). After the 15/30 days it will show the status as expired, and you have to buy a full-licence.

And by buying a full-licence you can buy the products with different licences and prices (more-user licences costs more!).

Ie. 360 can be bought only from a 3-user licence, but as I see now in the US Store the same is with NIS.

In other countries you have to check the local Symantec Stores of course how they licence they products. Ie. by us (Hungary) you can buy NIS with a 1 or a 3-user licence (there's a difference in the price!), but it is written there down on how many PCs you can install the software.

http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat4/ec_MAIN.Entry10?V1=11032093&SP=10024&CID=292580&PN=28&xid=27684&CUR=978&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=292580

I think it the same is by every localized Symantec Store. The only thing what every user must do is to read everything carefully! If you hurry, you can miss something important, and then you "can be introuble" (changing licences, money-back, buying again, etc.)....

By renewing I think it works this way, but we need some more infos about this from a Symantec Employee:

When you do a renew you will renew the same licence type you bought a year ago. So if it was a 1-user licence, you can renew it to a 1-user licence by default. But this needs a clearing....

EDIT: Of course there's an option in the programs to buy additional licences, but they are much more expensive then normal x-user licences (if you bought a lower user licence)...

Re: Are the trialware Downloads for 1pc only ?

If you activated with a 3PC license, and installed on 2 different machines. Then after you renew from one machine, the second machine should sync and reflect with the added days.

Basically, when you renew, it comes with the same number of users that the license (key) came with.

Can you comment on the fact that renewing a 1PC and a 3PC version appears to be the same price from going as far as I dare in the Norton Store that is linked to when you ask to renew NIS 2009 -- it does not ask whether it is a 1PC or a 3PC version, at least not where it gives the cost

Norton Internet Security Subscription

$49.99

Whereas if you click on MultiUser Pack you are shown prices for different numbers but not the 1 PC  and 3 PC ....

BTW They aren't MultiUser packs .... they are MultiPC packs, just like the 1 PC and 3 PC ? <g>

Re: Are the trialware Downloads for 1pc only ?

The price for 1PC vs 3PCs might have been different when you first purchased the license. Even though the renewal price might be the same. Are you sure you have a 1PC license?

Do you have a link to the NIS 1PC license? i'm only seeing the 3PC license.

I'm not the person with the query -- that is mo.

But this question of renewal comes up from time to time (as does the licence terms which weazel by saying the licence is for "the number of PCs specified" in the version you can read on the Symantec web site under Legal and no-one has succeeded in finding a EULA on their hard drive to the best of my knowledge -- I can't <s>) and the sticky message here says renewal gives you what you had before.

That is understandable but since one pays less for a 1PC version that is available in stores in the USA -- I've seen 1, 3 and 5 PC boxes on the shelves of my local supply store -- then it would be reasonable for the renewal to cost less too.

Or as I suggested, it would be good marketing to say that we are delighted you like it enough to renew it so spread the good word and if your wife now has a laptop you can install it there too when you renew (a good argument for early renewal too).

No charge for the marketing consultancy services .... <s>

Re: Are the trialware Downloads for 1pc only ?

Thanks for all the input,

I have just put this question forward to assist those who do not know the in's and outs of Renew/Upgrade(which again is not clear on the 3pc verse 1pc)And buying the product outright which I think is the easiest but not cost effective for those who want value/discounts after all we buy a download which I appreciate the work gone into it but it should be cheaper than the shop/store bought copy which in Australia I found just did not happen.

It would be great if all Symantec online store fronts would line up with clear instructions on 1pc,3pc.I don't know if this was  the right place to ask this question, but as hugh has mentioned I hope marketing takes note.

In the end it's really not about cost as that will always be determined by those in charge,it's more of clarity, ease of understanding of what you are buying.

Re: Are the trialware Downloads for 1pc only ?

I'm grateful you raised the question -- and since the website is not clear I'm sure Symantec is grateful too!

I'm sure the reason the download and the store prices are the same is that all "manufacturers" have to tiptoe through the minefield of not undercutting their independant sales outlets!

One could justify the lack of price differential in that the download is always more uptodate than the copy one buys on CD except during the short period after initial release and when you can get the absolutely current release in the downloaded form that saves a lot of time and occasional headaches in installing and updating.
