New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

New icon shows both on desktop and in tasktray at the lower right corner; round, white interior, and picture of what looks like a printer, and caption upon mouse placed onto it says, "Restart your computer to complete installation".  Already existing icon present as usual for Norton 360 Premier Edition; so not understanding why the new, extra icon ALSO for Norton 360, about some new installation.  The upgrade of N360 was already completed a month ago with remote assistance from a Symantec agent.  Should this new icon and its caption be suspicious?

Windows 7, desktop tower-form computer,

Norton 360 Premier, version 21.7.0.11

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

Hello g_cafe_c,

I am familiar with the icon you mentioned and a new Norton update has been recently released. From what you describe, you have received it and need to restart your machine.

Please restart your computer and then run Live Update again.  If prompted for another restart, please do so.

Then open the main UI go to Help > About and let us know your version number.

(When this icon is in the system tray at 16x16 pixels it can appear as a printer; but when enlarged it indicates the multi-device support offered by the new Norton Product line.)

Let us know how you do.

Got the same icon earlier today and asked myself "Complete Installation of WHAT!!??"

Went thru this process and it appears to have worked, but can't believe that Symantec made it so mysterious.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

Someone else restarted the computer a few hours ago.  LiveUpdate not yet been run since that.  I will recheck on this and make a LiveUpdate run.   That posted image IS the icon I had seen.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

Hello

The new version is 22.5.0.124. It arrives in 2 or 3 parts and usually requires a reboot or 2 after each part. After you receive the update, there may still be more updates so continue to run live update until there are no more updates and then restart one more time for good measure.. After you have received the update in full, please go over your settings to make sure you are familiar with the settings and so that they are the way you would like them to work.

Yes, the update or upgrade went to version 22.5, and the desktop icon is now a circle with a black checkmark, and the old N360 on the desktop disappeared.

Will someone please tell Symantec to be a bit more obvious with their updates!!  When I first saw the "Restart......" message, I figured it was just as valid as the phone messages I get from the IRS and Treasury Department about being in some kind of deep doo-doo - i.e. total BS. - lol

I have lost time to this already today also. Thank goodness you people already raised this as a problem. It looks like an attack. WAKE UP NORTON! This isn't how to start people's day.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

This is comment more than a problem - I pay for Norton coz I don't want to be troubled by computer issues. When updating the product causes me computer issues I start thinking its not worth the money. Just installed the update. Restarted. Explorer.exe crashed so I had to force a restart. Norton said everything was ok but norton360 wouldn't run so eventually found how to run liveupdate manually and this installed more updates. Now says no backup run for 4 days - I know it ran this morning.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

Do you mean the update has changed some settings or are there additional settings?

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

Great. I'm used to Norton360 sucking the life blood out of my computer, but you've really stuffed it now Norton. No icon at all, 100% everything (disk, CPU), and 2 hours lost thus far. I will do what I can to recover my machine, and send the bill.

Time for a proper solution methinks.

Followed by numerous checking this and checking that.

Now being advised to uninstall and reinstall. While online to the web. A recipe for further infection (beyond the Norton infections of this morning)? 14 minutes queue on the Chat line or place a long-distance call to a US number?

I have a feeling I'm going to be buying a proper anti-virus protection system and then billing Norton for all this damage (who will claim all kinds of disclaimers in their agreement).

Another day in Norton paradise. If anyone from Norton wants to get in touch that would be nice. Yea, dream on.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

I, for one, hope that Norton recognizes that mysterious messages popping up unexpectedly just might be a cause for concern.  I certainly didn't recognize the source and spent 10-15 minutes poking around on the internet looking for something to tell me if this was some kind of scam before I found this forum.  I definitely didn't just hit Restart.

I've used Symantec products since the medieval period of DOS and have always been comfortable with them - but I always knew who and what I was dealing with until yesterday morning.

Whoever approved that release must have had their head firmly up and locked.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

As the existing version of Norton 360 Premier Edition was reporting that it was completely up-to-date when Live Update was run,
the minimum I would have expected was a notification that this was a completely new download with the version number.

Logos and other trust images that we all recognise would also have been helpful.

When I ran re-booted my Windows 7 Ultimate PC and logged in again I had to search for the Norton 360 Premier Edition to manually run Live Update to complete the process and get anti-virus protection etc. running again!

Clicked to wiz through the 'what's new' screens that locked up and I could not get it to close down.
Closed this with Task Manager and fired it up again to see much the same old 360 with a new colour scheme.

I would recommend more usability testing before rolling out major updates.

On the one hand your simplistic no-details notification assumes zero knowledge with max. trust .

On the other hand the implementation does not auto-complete without some expertise.

You, bjm, could also benefit from some communication skills training.
You should make it clear on any thread that you were a Norton employee.
You should not expect Newbie contributors to be able to respond to a terse "What would you prefer / suggest."
And as for the disrespectful, Cheers , I think this proves you did not read the complete narrative of this thread.

I did read this whole thread and as a result I was able to complete the worst Norton product update that I have experienced since Windows 3.1.1.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

I would recommend more usability testing before rolling out major updates.

A big Amen to that!!  After reading this thread, I went ahead with the installation and it worked fine, but I was a bit nervous about it.

Back when I worked for a living, I was involved in developing software for nuclear plants.  One of our cardinal rules was that our software never, ever, confuse the control room operators.  A substantial part of our testing involved operators using our programs in a simulator and critiquing what they saw and what it meant to them.  It was a very informative process.  We had sometimes spent weeks on something and it made perfect sense..........to us.  The end users, however, got a blank look and said "Huh".

I hope that the folks at Symantec are paying attention to this thread and don't just blow us off as malcontents.

As a person with little computer 'technical' knowledge, I too was concerned about this new icon popping up and asking me to restart...which is why I Googled and came here.  I am sure I am one of many that has had this concern.  I found the comments of bjm rather rude and condescending towards the group and feel it was totally unwarranted.  If there was a 'mark as rude and unhelpful' button, I wouldn't have hesitated in clicking it.  Thank you to all the other comments that have helped me to clarify the situation and feel a little more secure in restarting my pc.  I know that even if there is a problem with the install, Norton will be there to assist as they have in the past.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

I commented in this thread too.

1. The automated download was pushed to my machine with no warning, announcement or option. I object strongly to this.

2. The resulting offending icon and message looked exactly like an attack.

3. The net result (loss of my time, and machine, for nearly 3 hours) was in effect an attack.

4. I had to resort to the Chat Desk to get help. My machine was in tatters. I found myself 14th in the queue, and had a long wait. I suggest this speaks for itself - the Desk was very busy all of a sudden. The cause was self-evident. Many others had the same experience.

5. The Chat Desk person took control of my machine, etc., and I have a working environment again (although I have to keep Norton in Silent Mode permanently, as before, in order to get anything done). I made him promise to pass my concerns to the Product Management manager. Predictably I have heard nothing back.

6. What we would all welcome, I suggest, is a proper review by the Product team - lesson #101 = how to distribute an update that will likely cause disruption - managing the customers' expectations.

IF ANYONE on this forum can find a way to bring this to the attention of Symantec management, it would be good for everyone, including themselves especially.

Respectfully,

There is no way your contributions can be classed as "offensive".
Nor is Ainat's response up to "Trolling".

The new 22.5.0.124 Norton 360 Premier has many 'improvements' to report on.
Such as the pop-up to sign-in to the Vault for Norton Identity Safe now popping UNDER the other windows.
Adding another 2 clicks to perform a daily or several times a day task?

Though I should probably raise a new topic for this.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

Norton confirmed that if you re-boot between 2 and 57 time and run live update after every re-boot it might fix the problem,  and only and undetermined # of user experience a total system failure and lost data associated with this forced upgrade so either way it ok.  If you do have a system failure you get to start over and not worry about your data because the upgrade corrupts all your backup data too!  Nice right?

I don't think that some of the comments, each way, were reasonable either. Let's focus our dismay on the product shortcomings, and improving (hopefully) future emissions like this enforced 'attack'-like upgrade.

Thanks.

Constructive feedback is listed earlier, in clear one point per line statements:

1. The automated download was pushed to my machine with no warning, announcement or option. I object strongly to this.

2. The resulting offending icon and message looked exactly like an attack.

3. The net result (loss of my time, and machine, for nearly 3 hours) was in effect an attack.

6. What we would all welcome, I suggest, is a proper review by the Product team - lesson #101 = how to distribute an update that will likely cause disruption - managing the customers' expectations.

These are the points I have sent through to [Removed] and I'd suggest others list their concerns in a similar fashion (I'm sure they'll find their own, potentially better, summaries) to other execs in Symantec.

Best regards

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

Norton has several avenues to inform its customers of updates:

1) notification when LiveUpdate runs

2) within the Norton 360 program (e.g., under the task buttons, where the "Your backup has not completed recently" message sits

3) the monthly report

4) email

Not going through these channels and using a different icon makes customers rightly suspicious. Years back, I had McAfee and had to be constantly vigilant for "Macafee" updates.

Now, let's assume I trust that this update is truly Norton.

The message "You must restart your computer for your Norton product to begin protecting you" is worrisome. My Norton program seems to be running fine, but this message suggests that I am unprotected. If this is the case, why does the update require a gap in protection without prior warning? If I am actually protected, then it seems Norton is using scare tactics to ensure people update quickly.

Reading this thread, it seems that Norton has issues beyond the poor communication. I don't want to lose my files; I don't want to wait in a queue; I don't want to restart and update repeatedly.

I'm not updating until a Symantec employee addresses the concerns in this thread.

Well said Zilaenor.

Exactly the point. No reasonable communications to us prior, no choice (it happens at the worst possible time, ie. start of day, you turned on your machine because you need it, not because it felt good), unpredictable levels of support and outcome.

I have emailed execs in Norton, with no reply, which underlines their arrogance. Probably time to make my disgust count where it matters, in the pocket, and go with an alternative.

Good luck with yours.

Re: New Icon - Restart Your Computer to Complete Installation

Hi floplot,

Couldn't help it but regret that your appeal to several Symantec senior people for help has been all but listened to. I also received this popup message earlier today and yes, it did look suspicious to me. This is the only reason I googled for help and landed on this thread. This thread was started July 5th and I got my somewhat scary message today, the 2nd of August. It's been almost a month. My point is, there has been plenty of time for someone from Symantec to have stepped in and say something, as you suggested.

I still did not restart my computer, so nothing has been "completely installed". I have been under the impression that the main purpose of this update 22.5.0.124 is to make Norton (more) compatible with Windows 10. And I have been uninterested in getting this Norton update, for two reasons: First, I do not plan on upgrading to Win-10 any time soon; and second, I have read about a variety of issues that this Norton update has caused since it started being distributed by Symantec. So my questions are:

1 - Am I correct on my assumption about the main purpose of this 22.5 Norton update?

2 - If so, what do you think about it being forced on the users, independently of the user's situation regarding the Win-10 update?

3 - Last, but not least important, have all those reported issues about this Norton update been resolved?

In summary: I'm in Norton 21.7.0.11; given my above described particular situation, what would I lose by not upgrading (or what would I gain by upgrading) to Norton 22.5.0.124 now? Can I avoid or postpone upgrading?  And how?

Many thanks for your usual great help.

And I may be unable to maintain my computer indefinitely without rebooting or shutting down...

All help will be appreciated.

The v22.5.2.15 update has already been pushed to your machine.  So, reboot.
If you don't like v22.5.2.15.  You can go back to v21.7.0.11
Features and enhancements from v22.x have been folded into v21.x
Yes, v22.5 supports W10.....but, v22.x features and enhancements were around before W10.
