NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect?

Regarding NIS version 22.5.0.124 [Admin edit - also 22.5.2.15]

What on earth is going on with this version of NIS!  I have been a Norton user for many years and have NEVER had so many issues after an update.

Anyway, today's problem is to do with the inability to disable Auto Protect.

When right clicking on the NIS Tray Icon the "Disable Auto-Protect" option is greyed out.  If I open NIS and navigate to the Anti-Virus settings page the "Auto-Protect" and "Removable Media Scan" options are greyed out.  A message at the bottom of the dialog box says '* These settings cannot be changed due to a pending remediation action. Restart you computer to resolve the issue.'

Well I can tell you that restarting does nothing.  Viewing the History shows that there are no unresolved security issues. There is NO information at all regarding just what the required remediation is.  How on earth are we to resolve issues like this!!!

I have used the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool which successfully re-installed NIS v22.5.0.124 after which I run Live Update a number of times.  After going through this exercise the Disable Auto-Protect options did indeed become available again.  HOWEVER, a little time later after which I had restarted the machine a couple of times, I noticed that the options for Auto-Protect were again greyed out, with the same message displayed in settings.

I do NOT want to have to reinstall this software every time I might need to temporarily disable the Anti-Virus checker.

What goes on Symantec?  What on earth have you done with this version of NIS.  Despite my years as a user all this carry on with dozens of false positives, reliable old programs being treated as 'suspicious', Identity Safe opening behind the browser all the time, and now the software thinks that some remediation is required, that never occurs, cause me to reconsider my next renewal which is due in 90 days.

Regards,

Annoyed

Hi, JustRight. Some users have experienced problems such as yours, with the update to v22.5.0.124.

The new update V 22.5.2.15 is being progressively rolled out, and you may well find this fixes your issues.

Hello Just Right

If you are in a hurry to get the update, please run Live Update. It comes in 2 parts and requires a restart. Please then go over the Settings to make any changes that you may want to make and remember to hit Apply. Then restart again. Then you can see if it has fixed your issues.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

Re: NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect?

Hi,

OK, I now have version 22.5.2.15 successfully updated.  The system has been restarted multiple times since the update.

Unfortunately the "Disable Auto-Protect" and "Removable Media Scan" on the Anti-Virus settings page remain greyed out and not accessible.

I have also noticed that Identity Safe still opens underneath the browser window (Firefox 39) . . . .sigh

Thanks anyway.

Re: NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect?

Hi,

I am experiencing the same issue as JustRight. When right clicking on the NIS Tray Icon on Norton 360, the "Disable Auto-Protect" option is greyed out. I also receive the message a at the bottom of the dialog box says "These settings cannot be changed due to a pending remediation action. Restart you computer to resolve the issue."

I am using the latest version on Norton 360 ( 22.5.2.15) and the issue has not been fixed. I talked to Norton support, the agent suggested I restart - which failed. The agent also suggested I uninstall Norton 360, then re-install. I did so. It temporarily fixed the issue, however after a few minutes, it was greyed out again. Did a full scan, scan came up clean with no infections, however I still receive the message "These settings cannot be changed due to a pending remediation action. Restart you computer to resolve the issue." As stated earlier, restarting does not solve the issue, not even a shut down, and a hard power-on.

Another issue that I am disappointed that was removed was the ability under Firewall settings, to block all internet traffic. Sure there are other ways to do this, but it was nice and convenient to be able to do it right from Norton 360.

I have been a customer for 8 years and currently have a 2 year subscription, but I am having serious doubts about Norton 360 now and I am considering using another security solution. I am upset I paid for this product, and the features are not working. Yes, it does protect the PC from threats, however I feel users should have more control over the product, and be able to use the features that it comes with, not for them to be greyed out, or have glitches.

Re: NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect?

After reading these problems being experienced by JustRight and HTMTheGame, I'm having second thoughts about updating from my current NIS version 21.7.0.11 to the most recent one (22.5.2.15). I understand that my current version requires that I get the updated version through the Norton Version Updater, as it is not available via LiveUpdate, in order to make my product compatible with Win 10. But I still did not decide whether I will install Windows 10 when it becomes available for download in about a week and I am leaning instead towards waiting for the reactions from the early users before making any decision.

So my question is, am I losing something for keeping my present version (21.7.0.11) since I will not be upgrading to Windows 10 any time soon or are there any other good reasons, besides the upgrade, to migrate now to the new version 22.5.2.15?  At least now I am free of those reported problems, so I would be willing to wait until the time when I eventually  decide to upgrade to Windows 10 if there are no other valid reasons for updating now, independently of such upgrade.

Please help.

I will remain open to any additional information and to all suggestions but, truly, I see no point, at this time, in running into possible troubles (such as the ones reported above) with no measurable benefits as a counterbalance...

Based upon limited reports.  Hard for me to tell how common greyed settings presents.

Re: NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect?

Further to this issue.

I have today used the Norton Removal and Reinstall utility to once again re-install my NIS v22.5.2.15

Immediately following the install I ran Live Update.  This completed normally and all the Anti Virus settings, including disabling Auto-Protect were available.

However, the very first time I restarted the computer, immediately following startup, I checked the settings and sure enough the Auto-Protect option was once again disabled!  What remediation is required, it gives no details in History or anywhere.

On top of this I continue to get false positives via WS.Reputation.1, despite having excluded this signature from scanning and also having added the programs it complains about to the Program Exclusions.

This version of NIS is a Joke.  I have 88 days of my subscription remaining, I don't think I will be renewing.

Thanks for nothing.

You may add WS.Reputation.1 item to Exclude from Auto Protect once you're sure item is safe > Restart. For second opinion on WS.Reputation.1 item > Choose File and / or Search hash at VirusTotal (link is external) or upload file to VirSCAN (link is external) and/or Jotti.   (link is external) and/or submit for review analysis How to report false positives

Once your sure WS.Reputation.1 item is safe.  You may restore WS.Reputation.1 from Quarantine > run File Insight > Check Trust > Trust Now item > Restart.

Hi LinYu2,

Yes, I can roll back to the previous version.  I think that I will in fact do that.  I can then consider what to do next.

My intention was to delay the intsall of Windows 10 for some time anyway, so that will give me the opportunity to evaluate other options.  For using Norton however, if you intsll Windows 10 you must use this new joke version!

Cheers.

So, you've restored from Quarantine and excluded from future scans.   And you've Exclude > Configure + the process and download/installer and Signature.  and you've Trusted the process by Norton Insight. ...  and you've requested Norton re-analyze. ...

Hmm....always works for me.    Sorry.

Just tried the Norton insight, I did have 3 files listed as poor & don't know why as they're all safe so I changed them to user trust , rebooted a couple of times but still the auto disable is greyed out in the settings and the right click context menu from the taskbar icon. I have no unresolved security risks, even did a full system scan, rebooted and it's still all greyed out, what the hell have you done Symantec!!!

Okay, after I updated to 22.5.2.15.  I updated one of my trusted programs.  Settings greyed after awhile... so, I posted the steps I did to sort greyed settings.   There were three parts of my trusted program that were listed with Untrusted Files as orange Poor.  I checked their hash and trusted by User Trust.  I refreshed Norton Insight (by refresh circle arrow) and cycled Norton Insight to confirm green Trust took. Then I rebooted and grey settings were normal.
I've sorted greyed settings a few times by Exclude Auto Protect and/or Norton Insight/File Insight.
Greyed settings reports to the Community go back at least 6 months.

Never come across this greyed out settings issue and I've been using Norton products for over 10 years, not until I installed the latest version 22.5.2.1.5 of Norton internet security did this problem rear it's ugly head on my system. It would at least be helpful if the Norton app bothered to tell you exactly what program was causing the settings to be greyed out.

Yes, greyed settings appeared with Norton Security v22.x
Now, since Norton Security v22.x has been folded into NIS/N360/NAV v21.x/etc.
Community is seeing more grey settings reports.

So, after running Norton Insight on "All Files" and trusting dozens of mainstream programs and many DLL's from people like Microsoft, Cyberlink, Stardock etc etc which Norton treated as 'Bad' or 'Poor', and restarting the system a number of times NIS STILL shows the Auto-Protect option greyed out.

This software is a laugh, but I'm not laughing.

You also need to add programs to the auto protect exclude list, took me ages to narrow the issue down for me but it was msi afterburner. Why this program was causing issues with nis I don't know, they really need to alter the way their software works to at least tell you why the auto protect is greyed out, instead of making us users go hunting through apps one by one, not to mention it takes a reboot each time so if you've got a lot of software installed then it can take ages, as it did for me!

Well, I seem to have resolved my various issues with NIS v22.5.2.15

Despite spending way too much time trying to 'fix' issues and exclude files that previous versions of NIS were entirely happy with, I decided to take action. With my subscription renewal coming up soon I have removed NIS from two of my three systems and installed "Bitdefender Internet Security 2015" instead.

That is a measure of how unimpressed I am with the whole thing.

Still VERY unimpressed.

Please do me a favor.  Check Norton Insight > Untrusted Files.
I've managed to avoid greyed settings by Trust Now > Untrusted Files in Norton Insight.    I used to exclude the trigger program to sort greyed settings not related to malware remediation.  Now, I'll check Norton Insight  > Untrusted Files.  I'll click on Untrusted item and scrutinize the file via VirusTotal.  Then I'll do Trust Now.  Been working my machine for quite awhile.

Re: NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect?

Hi bjm,

So, once again I have gone through Norton Insight "All Files" list and trusted hundreds of files and programs that Norton now treats as 'Bad', 'Poor' or 'Unproven'.  Many of these programs are even mainstream games like "Borderlands2.exe", "Gridautosport.exe" etc etc.  It is totally ridiculous.

Anyway, having finally got through the list there are three items which Norton Insight claims as 'Unproven' that are actually in the Windows Assembly Cache !!!  These files are effectively inaccessible to me, and if I click on one in the Norton Insight display, after a couple of moments Norton removes it from the list.  But if I do a refresh then it comes back again.  These DLL's and EXE files are from the reputable developer "R2 Studios" and are a part of the Startup Delayer product.

Needless to say that the 'Autoprotect' options remain greyed out, despite all my effort and multiple restarts.

It is insane that Norton now requires us to manually intervene for files like this.  It was never necessary before.  And please don't tell me I need to now go and add exclusions for the hundreds of files I have just manually trusted, that is patently ludicrous.

The bottom line is that this new version of Norton is fundamentally flawed. The previous version worked perfectly well.  It was unobtrusive and generally reliable. This update is a farce in many areas.

Re: NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect?

No problem bjm, I appreciate the suggestion.  However, even when I select the "Untrusted Files" option I still get the same list as "All Files" with three programs listed as 'Unproven'. These three are in the Windows Assembly Cache and are effectively inaccessible to me. So goodness knows why NIS is complaining about them.

I guess the thing that angers me most is that Symantec took a solid working product and have made a pigs breakfast of it!

I'm glad it is working for you.  I suspect there are many others like myself that are having to reach for an alternative.

Cheers.

Re: NIS v22.5.2.15 cannot disable autoprotect?

@bjm

Hi bjm_

I have still been unable to enable Auto-Protect in Norton 360 (latest Version). I had downloaded the Hotfix from Norton Auto-Update, but it did not remedy the problem. At this point I am starting to get extremely upset. I have had 2 different Norton/Symantec Agents connect remotely to my PC, one of the agents even went in and deleted every trace of Norton 360 and had me to a re-install, after the re-install, like many other users in this thread, the Auto-Protect is available again, but after a restart, it is greyed-out again. Not only Auto Protect, but Boot Time Protection and Removable Media Scan (I don't even have any removable media on my PC, not even USB flash drives connected!) - Please see attached Pic below:

So after re-installing Norton 360 several times, having two Norton Symantec agents remotely connect to my PC and being unable to fix it (always stating they would forward it to another department and get back to me, which they never have) and after the Hotfix the problem still remains.

I have been a Norton/Symantec customer for over 8 years, possibly even 9 years and have been extremely loyal to Norton/Symantec Products. I have even written several reviews over the years (usually I write a new review on popular tech websites and software websites, as well as A/V testing sites and have always scored Norton/Symantec products very well. but this latest version is poor).

Not long ago, I just renewed my subscription for 2 more years and have 414 days of subscription left. I am not happy for paying for a product that does not work properly (yes it still does detect items, but not all functions work). Even some of the features are gone that I used frequently in previous versions such as the ability to block all network traffic under the firewall settings. Yes, this can be done in Windows, however it was convenient to do it through Norton 360. I was even a Norton One Customer and provided research for the product and beta tested it before it's release.

I sincerely appreciate all of the help from yourself, the agents who connected to my computer, and to all the users in the Norton community working together to try to solve this issue. But I am extremely upset that I just paid a little while ago for 2 years of subscription and now this latest version does not perform as intended and many features are missing or do not work properly.

I am kind of stuck with this product now for at least the next 414 days, but after this it may be time to start looking for another security solution. I am just that upset over this. For 8 or 9 years I have put my money and trust into Norton/Symantec products and services and now it is not working properly and I am stuck with 414 days of subscription time left.

It has been a while now and no one seems to know how to fix this, and it is clear there are many others with the same issue in this thread, and maybe others with the same issue who have not reported it to this thread.

I am not meaning to complain, or say "oh this is horrible I will be switching to a competitor for my PC security needs" - I have been faithful to Norton/Symantec for 8-9 years now (sorry to keep repeating that) but when I pay for a product I expect it to work properly and all functions be accessible. Like I said, I am stuck now with 414 days left on my 2 years renewal subscription and features are no longer there in this version, and features that are in this version are not working properly.

I am extremely upset, especially after paying for Norton/Symantec products for so many years.
