Disney's Toontown

I can't get Disney's ToonTown to play and I wonder if Norton Online Family is blocking it somehow. I thought it might be NIS, but I manually granted it permission through the firewall. I've attempted this setup twice on two computers. I need one Toontown account for the son and another for the daughter (they each have seperate accounts on the computer). I can't get it to work on either computer. Both computers are using Vista.

http://play.toontown.com/

How about the rest of you? Has anyone else seen this problem? Or does Toontown work fine for you?

Re: Disney's Toontown

Please check the reason the site is being blocked.  The site is either on the blacklist, or  the categories of the website(a site could belong to multiple categories) are blocked.  You can check them at Settings=>Web=>Check each Site Category below that you want to block from XXX.

One solution to the problem is to uncheck the categories  that the site belongs to and click Update Settings.  If you prefer not to “uncheck” the blocked categories, you could add the site to the white list at Settings=Web=>Specific Web sites to allow and click Update Settings.

Re: Disney's Toontown

For http://play.toontown.com/ to be allowed, you must allow "Gaming" in the settings page.

To do this go the the onlinefamily.norton.com website, select the child in question and go to settings. When in settings go to the Web tab and make sure "Gaming" is not checked.

Click update settings.

Back on the child machine, be sure to right click update house rules, otherwise there is a delay in getting the settings down to the system.

Re: Disney's Toontown

Thanks Matt and Katie.

Gaming is not checked, and hasn't been checked since I let my kids play online games like Wizard101 and Toontown and FusionFall.

But when they try to play ToonTown, we get the following error message:

http://play.toontown.com/reportBugPCLauncher.php?message=4

As you can see, I have it allowed using NIS. And "Gaming" is allowed on OnlineFamily. As you can see, OnlineFamily seems to let it through. So then, why isn't the game connecting to the Toontown server and downloading/playing?

Any thoughts on what might be going on? These are the only security projects I have installed and running.

Re: Disney's Toontown

Since it doesn't look like OnlineFamily.Norton is blocking the site. I suggest you do the following to determine the source of the blocking.

  1. Turn off NIS's Smart firewall for 15 min.
  2. Check if you can now access Disney Toontown.

If you can, it is NIS that is blocking the access. You will need to reset your program rules for the exes connected to Disney Toontown

  1. You can do this by opening Program Control.
  2. Click on Toontown and Toontown Launcher and remove the rules from Program Control. (This action will not block the program. Instead a new rules will be created the next time you access Disney Toontown .)
  3. Save your actions by clicking the OK button.
  4. Open Disney Toontown. You should now have access to the download page.

Please let us know if this resolve your issue.

Re: Disney's Toontown

The problem is Norton safety minder, because I can't log on to my Toontown account either. It doesn't matter what I change in the program rules or what I change in the web settings tab. What can I do? I would REALLY like to use The safetyminder for my kids, but we'd like to play toontown too.

I am running the latest version of Norton 360.  I don't have the problem logging on toontown while running the Norton 360, just when I install the safety minder for the kids. I can't get toontown to connect again until I uninstall the safety minder. I've tried adjusting the settings on safty minder all to no avail.

Hi swinfard,

I was on ToonTown page http://play.toontown.com/, then clicked Game on the menu bar, and then was directed to page  http://disney.go.com/games/#/games/all/.  I selected All Games and chose game  “Aladdin’s Escape”.  I was able to play it on the PC with Norton Safety Minder installed.

I’m not sure those are the steps you take or not.  Do you have to download any software in ToonTown (I didn’t)? Please play the game “Aladdin’s Escape” by following my steps to see if you are able to play it or not.

Hi Katie,

Try reproducing again. This time, instead of going to the generic Disney "Games" click on the big red button the reads "Sign Up & Play". I still haven't been able to get ToonTown to run either.

Re: Disney's Toontown

With so many new MMORPG's popping up devoted to kids nowadays, I'm curious to know how Norton is staying on top of them all with their compatibility testing.

KatieQ's lack of knowledge about how to reproduce the ToonTown issue worries me a little. I'd think the OnlineFamily team should be experts on gaming sites for kids, like Disney's ToonTown, Wizard101, Nanoverse Online, FusionFall, Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean Online, etc. I can't even fathom how Norton can stay on top of all the various popular sites out there for kids. Luckily I don't allow my kids to use social networking sites.

I think Norton staff needs to be watching more NickToons & CartoonNetwork, and spending less time watching SpikeTV  & G4.

Are you telling me that you are able to create an account, create a character, and actually walk around the town playing the game -- with OnlineFamily and NIS installed? Heh. I'd like to see a screenshot of it, because I don't believe you.

Because I can't play. But then we can't play http://www.nanovor.com/ either.

I'm considering uninstalling Norton from my kids computer since Norton doesn't seem to play well with the online games my kids like to play.

I like happy kids better than sad frustrated ones.

Re: Disney's Toontown

We are continuing to research the problem here.

One of the major issues is that we are seeing the toontown launcher crashing on login without any security products installed whatsoever, which seems to be the same behavior of what the original poster is describing.

While from time to time, the Norton Safety Minder blocks requests to specific sites based on a web supervision category. We haven't seen any problems with other non-security applications having conflicts with the safety minder. I doubt that toontown.exe installs a network driver that we would be conflicting with.

A few items would be helpful in clarifying this issue:

- Does the operating system indicate that a program closed unexpectedly? (the report bug page listed in the original post provides some compelling evidence that it does.). It appears that this is an issue with Windows Vista that Disney is already aware of.

- If it is some other issue (like the display of the watch dog blocking screen, or another error type returned by the application) then we need more details about the exact behavior observed (what screens are displayed? are current screens unresponsive? etc). Also, if the Norton Safety Minder blocked web requests from the application there should be an indication of blocked requests in the child's activity page on the OnlineFamily.Norton website, can anyone confirm blocked requests on their activity page?

edit: 'tylerdurden' has posted screenshots with an error message on the  login page... can the original poster confirm that this is the behavior they are seeing?

- Just to clarify,  has the web supervision setting been disabled completely and the problem persists? Has the safety minder been disabled (as opposed to uninstalled) and the problem still exists? If that is the case, then there may be a network driver issue.

Re: Disney's Toontown

Ok,

new day... fresh coffee.. here we go.

I found a problem with Windows Vista operating systems that have not been updated causing crashing problems with Disney's toontown. I was able to successfully install and play toon town on vista Home premium only after running windows update.

I then installed the Norton Safety Minder and downloaded rules that monitor web activity and block gaming sites.

Norton Safety Minder is designed such that it should not interfere with other programs that connect to the web.

I was able to successfully login, connect, and play Toontown even with norton safety minder running, though the safety minder does appear to be blocking the requests based on the gaming category.

So the gaming category must be unselected to allow users to play toontown.  We'll have our development staff take a look at what's going on with that. The next step will be to add a security product to see if that may be affecting the application.

My suggestion to those having problems right now would be to check to see that they have fully updated their operating systems using windows update, so we can eliminate that from the list of causes.

I will post an update with more info as I get it.

Re: Disney's Toontown

Wow. This is major Deja-Vu for me.

I have been trying to figure out why some of our computers could no longer access Toontown and others could.  Disney's insists it is a firewall issue.  But all my machines - six machines in total - run either Norton 360 v3 or NIS 2010.  No problems.  I had installed Norton Online Family on three of the machines my kids use.  And now Toontown can not access the server on those three machines.  Well, I disable Online Family and I still can not access the server.  I figure it must be something else, so I totally disable the firewall, and Norton Online Family... and I still can not access the server.  I just picked a laptop - now as I type this message - and made sure the Windows updates are current, they are.  I disable Online Family... nope, I can log in, as always, but Toontown can not load the playground.  (Above when I mention Toontown can not access the server, that is what I meant - I am able to put in account info and get to the main page, but when attempting to get to the server to play the game, it fails).  I just now REMOVED Norton Online Family and then I reboot.  Guess what.... I can NOW play Toontown on that computer!

It would seem to me that I have a 'smoking gun' in the Norton Online Family program.   What concerns me more is that even though I disabled the program from the menu, it took a full uninstall to get access to Toontown back.

These computers are all different... all Vista, one is 64 bit, two are 32 bit.  So now I know that doing an uninstall of Norton Online Family will allow me to connect to Toontown and play.... but I really like the program.

Does Norton plan on fixing this issue?  And why does the disable option not allow Toontown to work?

Thanks

Andy

Just tried other two laptops.... a full unistall of Norton Online Family resolves my connection problem with Toontown's server on all these laptops.

These laptops are all different.... Toshiba Satellite with Vista Ultimate 64, Dell with Vista Home Premium 32 bit, and Acer with Vista Ultimate 32 bit.  All are up to date on updates.  All three of the machines were redone to factory defaults at the end of August in preparation for use for school and all updates applied.  Two of the machines hardly saw any use and the one was heavily used and populated with various programs.

Re: Disney's Toontown

Just to further clarify... I actually had gaming not being monitored.  I only monitor, I do not block.  I also totally disabled web monitoring and updated the rules.  I also disabled Norton Safety Minder.  No luck here.  After uninstalling Norton Safety Minder, I was able to connect.  I then downloaded the program again and viola!  I can no longer connect to the server  - even with Safety Minder disabled and even with it not monitoring web activity.... Microsoft OS is totally up to date.... and I have three laptops here with this issue as stated in my earlier post.

If you would like, I can video the entire process and send it too you... seems like a bit much though...

Re: Disney's Toontown

Hi,

I'm the product manager of Norton Online Family, and I tried this at home to see if I could reproduce the problem.  (Katie is working very hard in order to try and reproduce the issue in-house).  I had an odd problem - I actually couldn't get Toontown to successfully connect (i.e., to walk around - I was first able to create an avatar, but then couldn't even log in) even with the Norton Safety Minder uninstalled.

I did this on a new Win7 machine.

I'm contacting the Toontown people to discuss, but I wanted to let you know that we've seen some erratic behavior in the Toontown app on Win7 and are trying very hard to reproduce this in-house to find any specific link to coexistence with the Norton Safety Minder.  Katie is going to be contacting some of you with follow-up questions to try and help us reproduce this.

Thanks!!

Re: Disney's Toontown

I am not running Windows 7.  I have three machines affected.  Vista 64 - which I have used for a while with Toontown, yet Disney tells me will not run Toontown, and two Vista 32s.  I can only tell you what I have done.

Three machines.  All connected to Toontown.  Installed Norton Safety Minder.  No more can they connect to Toontown.  Disabled Norton Safety Minder.  Still can not connect to Toontown.  Uninstall Norton Safety Minder.  Now I can connect to Toontown.  Install Norton Safety Minder.  No more can I connect to Toontown.  Disable it, still can not connect.  Remove it, and I can connect.  Three machines, all different machines - an Acer running Vista 32, a Dell running Vista 32 and a Toshiba running Vista 64.  I can repeat this over and over again until I am blue in the face.

These machines have either Norton 360 v3 or NIS 2010 on them.  I have seven computers in all here and six run a Norton firewall anti-virus product.   I like and will continue to use Norton products, I just wish I could use Norton Safety Minder!

And believe me, I know there are sometimes issues with Toontown not running... sometimes it is security settings in Internet Explorer, sometimes graphic drivers need to be updated.  But these machines all ran Toontown in the past fine.

Thanks

Andy

Hi There,

We're trying to reproduce this in-house - we've tried so far on several machines, but haven't yet been able to get a machine where the install of Norton Safety Minder prevents Toontown from working.  Unfortunately, since the Toontown app is a bit erratic, it's made it harder for us to troubleshoot.  But we're still working on it.

I've copied all the team's engineering leads on a thread about this issue, so hopefully we can get something solved soon.

While we wait patiently, the data Matt took from my computer was a Vista 32 bit install, not a 64 bit install.  Disney tech support actually told me that TT will not run on Vista 64, but they had no comment went I told them I had run it for a while on three separate 64 bit installs.  (That's tech support for ya!)  Minus the Norton programs, the only thing the computers have in common it the router and ISP (A Linksys WRT54G and Time Warner).  How about everyone else with this issue?  What router and ISP do you use?

It would be good to compare notes.

Re: Disney's Toontown

I have made some progress!  Sort of....

So I was bored this morning and decided to install Safety Minder on my desktop. (Vista 64 Ultimate) Never had it on there as the kids do not use it.  As expected, I installed Safety Minder and set up for one of my kids and Toontown did not load.  HOWEVER.  I made up a new child "Phantom Child" and changed the computer to be their computer and Toontown now loads.  Switch it back to my daughter's account and Toontown will not load.  Switch back to "Phantom Child" and Toontown loads.  Switch back to my daughter and Toontown loads.

SAY WHAT?!  Switch back to "Phantom Child" and Toontown will not load.

I leave it on Phantom Child for a while and try three logins.... fail,fail,fail.  I click on "Edit Accounts" and log in but do not actual change anything.  I hit OK Try again (Still on Phantom Child)... success!  Wow.  What is going on here?  Still works.  Change to my daughter again. fail once, succes second.  Wow.  I am clueless.

I'm going to try this on the laptop Matt was collecting data from and see what happens.  At first I thought I was not waiting long enough for Norton Online Family to update the rules after I changed accounts.

A nice feature would be for the parent to know which child was actually logged on to the computer - the pawprint does not tell me and I have to actually log in to know it is set for my son or daughter or phantom child....

好评0

Re: Disney's Toontown

Connecting to my neighbors Wi-Fi (same ISP different router) - no change.  Updated my router to latest firmware - no change.

The laptop Matt collected data from is not affected by my changing children back and forth.  No matter what child I select and how many times I try, I am always locked out of Toontown.  This machine is wireless running Vista 32.  Changed children, disabled Safety Minder.....nothing.  Disabled radio and hooked up cat five... maybe?  Nope.  For whatever reason the laptop will NOT give me intermittant connections like the wired desktop will.

Not sure what that means, if anything.  Hope it helps!
