The greenwebsite bar

I get a green website bar, like the one at the top of this page, when I go to websites that involve money. I don't get one when I go to ebay. It flashes green when I go to log in, then goes off. How do I get it to remain there. I feel more secure with the green website bar. Regards Cymro 888

Re: The greenwebsite bar

The green bar indicates that the site is using an Extended Validation certificate, which requires that the site meet more stringent guidelines for authentication by the certificate issuing authority.  Most sites that conduct financial transactions will use the EV certificate.  A site without the green bar, but with a padlock icon, is still secure and encrypted, but has not been vetted as thoroughly as a site with the EV certificate.  There isn't anything you can do to change the type of certificate that your browser indicates that a site is using, nor would you want to - it is important that the browser accurately tell you which type of certificate the website has.

Re: The greenwebsite bar

Thanks very much Sendofjive for the clear explanation. I checked the ebay login again and it doesn't even have the padlock on the website bar. It does have the full https. Is this safe?

I'm much obliged for your help.

Https is a secure, encrypted site.
