What is process dirt.exe?

My first post, so apologize in advance if not following correct protocols.  Running Windows 7 on an HP p6774y desktop.  Primarily use Firefox for a browser.  At startup tonight, lots of hard drive access, which seems to happen from time to time.  Opened Task Manager just in time to see a process dirt.exe, with very high PID count, bounce around the top couple of processes then disappear.  Quick Google search was not encouraging so thought I would inquire on the Norton forum for any insight.  Any help appreciated!

Re: What is process dirt.exe?

Do you have a Colin McRae rally game installed?

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

No.  Actually don't do any gaming.  Did see some references to that in Google search results, though.  Is this item malware which could compromise my PC and files or just a nuisance?

Re: What is process dirt.exe?

I found plenty of references. One is "dirt.exe is a exe file made by Codemasters for their DiRT. ... the best Windows Error Fixer that helps fix dll errors".I also found it can be a windows process file. Also found this...... "dirt.exe is a dangerous Trojan virus which can be spread over the word via malicious files through spam mail, hacked sites and online scam adware. It will work with the remote server to download more risky files into the target computer and installed on your system to put more threats into the PC. It would create favorable conditions to allow remote monitoring of the infected PC and allow it to collect personal information including sensitive private data and credit card information without notice. It would allow network crime. This Trojan horse disguise as an innocent harmless file to cheat the guard to get allowance of running and installing that you cannot remove it or even find it after installed."

Hello member_123

Since german shepherd has found some reference relating to malware, perhaps it would be a good idea if you would stop by at one of the free malware removal sites and have them check to see if you have malware. Do this only after you have done a full scan with your Norton product.

Please see this link for an up to date description of these sites plus the addition of a newly listed site formed by one of our successful malware remover users. The new site is listed first in this link.
