NIS Context Menu Item is Missing in Limited Accounts

I have NIS 2009 running on Windows XP Home SP 3.

In my Administrator account, I can right-click on any file and see the Norton Internet Security context menu item (Scan Now). However, this context menu item is missing in Limited accounts. My Limited users see only a blank space on the context menu, and clicking on the blank space does not produce an on-demand scan.

I also noticed that, while Norton Internet Security appears in my Limited users' Start menus, none of the selections are clickable. (That is, you click on them and nothing happens.) I presumed that this was intentional, since you don't want Limited users to mess with the program settings. But perhaps this is related to the problem described above?

I believe that you have something 'extra' limited going here.  I know that the settings take an Administrator to change but the functionality should still be there for Limited Users.  Do you have any extra settings done for the Limited User; I mean other than making the account a Limited User did you go in and change any of the abilities of the account?  Any other security programs or access control programs (K9, Net Nanny, etc)?  Any other Norton products on the system?

This is what I was thinking of. It sounds like some other security program is blocking

Re: NIS Context Menu Item is Missing in Limited Accounts

I have no other security software running, nor is any installed. I was careful to thoroughly uninstall my previous security software.

I believe the blank context menu item problem is, in fact, related to the Limited user's inability to start any of the NIS shortcuts in the Start menu. Looking in NIS History, I found an 'Unauthorized access blocked' entry. Access was blocked to c:\program files\...\Norton Internet Security\...\uiStub.exe -- that's the NIS user interface.

This sounds like it might be an NTFS permissions issue. I'm not sure why this would be, since my Limited users can execute other software (within the context of a Limited account's privileges.) I'll have to look into this further and report back to the group.

Once again, NIS has done right by me: its History helped me to identify what went wrong.

Keep us posted on what you find.  I still find something out of kilter here.

Re: NIS Context Menu Item is Missing in Limited Accounts

Well, there was nothing incorrect about NTFS permissions, so I opened a chat session through one-click support.

According to my tech, this behavior is expected for a Limited user. Limited users have no access to the program at all, according to this tech, not even for an on-demand scan. Limited user accounts are protected by NIS in the background.

While I personally don't see why a Limited user shouldn't be able to perform an on-demand scan, I'm satisfied that the protection provided by NIS in the background is sufficient.

As for the blank space in the context menu...nothing can be done about that. For now, at least.

There's only one more thing I need before I'm totally satisfied: If anyone out there has XP Home SP 3, can you verify that a Limited user has no access to NIS, and that the context menu item is blank?

Re: NIS Context Menu Item is Missing in Limited Accounts

Hi Bulldoggy,

Let me give you a report for the default Guest (limited) account on my XP Pro SP3:

Right Click context menu to scan with Norton Internet Security is functional.

In the main Norton Interface, no Settings can be accessed - except for Identity Safe.

Again, from the main interface I can access Scan Now and run a scan. I can also access History, Quarantine and Run Live Update. Access to view the Network map is denied.

A right click on the systray icon yields these results:

Open Norton Internet Security

Run Quick Scan

Run Live Update

View Recent History

Get Support ** disabled

Turn on Silent Mode

Disable Smart Firewall ** disabled

Disable AntiVirus Auto-Protect ** disabled

I have to agree that it seems something else is going on here.

Re: NIS Context Menu Item is Missing in Limited Accounts

Bulldoggy,

Regrettably the information given to you by the tech you chatted with is not correct.  I run XP SP3 as a limited user everyday and I routinely right click and scan with NIS 2009.  As Phil D states, a limited user cannot access the settings screens to make configuration changes, but can view all history logs and initiate scans.  Is this a new installation of NIS 2009 or have you been using it for a while?

Re: NIS Context Menu Item is Missing in Limited Accounts

Well...looks like I'm no further ahead than I was at the start.

I will try to think of what other restrictions I may have unwittingly placed on Limited accounts, and I'll re-examine my configuration settings in NIS. I'm also going to pay NIS tech support another visit...

This is a new, first-time installation of NIS 2009 performed less than a week ago.

[Hey--No more captcha squiggles for me. I guess I'm "in" now.]

Hi Bulldoggy,

Yes, you're in now!

Most security programs have a specialized Removal Tool to make sure all traces of the program are removed. What security program did you have before and did you run their removal tool (if available)?

I am not aware of any configuration settings in Norton which would cause this.

Re: NIS Context Menu Item is Missing in Limited Accounts

Can you post a picture of your right click menu (from a Explorer file view); one that shows the most options would be helpful?  There may be a conflict in the user GUI shell and this will help pinpoint it.

Here is an image of what I see in Limited user accounts:

I hope that's helpful.

Re: NIS Context Menu Item is Missing in Limited Accounts

I love stories with happy endings.

As you suspected - and I came to realize - my Limited accounts had some type of file and/or access restriction that was preventing NIS 2009 from working properly. I tried to find it on my own, but without success

I finally installed the SubInAcl tool from Microsoft and used it to reset permissions. Success!

Thanks to all for sticking with me as I worked through this problem.
