Background Idle Cleanup & Reinstalling NS

Hi

I have two questions please.  The first requires a solution but the second is just for information.

1. I have been through all the settings in NS and deactivated all background idle scans. I believe I have exhausted my search for turning off all such checks.  However, I keep getting a pop up telling me that Norton is conducting background idle clean-up checks.  How do I stop Norton Security from doing this once and for all?

2. I had to reinstall NS yesterday.  I believe it's the 22.5.2.15 edition installer I have saved on my disc.  Now the software installs and updates to the latest version (22.8.1.14) with no problems.  However; why does this software download loads of updates then wants me to restart, then downloads more updates, another restart, then downloads more updates, another restart ... and so on.  I had to "apply patch" twice and restart the computer 4 times during different stages of the updates.  Why can't NS just download the latest patch in one hit, rather than this staggered update approach?

Thank you.

Re: Background Idle Cleanup & Reinstalling NS

Background idle tasks are necessary for Norton to work. Why do you want to disable them? Also your cd version of Norton is out of date. There has been several updates since. You would need to download a 1GB file to get everything up to date. You could just download the latest version directly from your Norton account. The updates are virus definition updates and also program updates. These are released in a timely fashion as to not bog down the server or your internet connection.

You can turn off a limited number of background tasks via Settings > Task Scheduling.  You can uncheck all those listed there and also on the Scheduling Tab select the Manual Schedule - that will permit you to run them when and if you desire.

The Administrative Settings > Background Tasks > Configure [+] tasks are not controllable by the user, other than selecting to run them manually, and there is no control over the items that are Grayed out  they are just shown to let you know what is going on in the back ground - on Norton's end.

Also if you do not desire to see any Task Notifications, you can go to Settings > Administrative Settings > Norton Task Notification > turn it to OFF and Apply and the notifications should no longer appear.

As PBS explained, your disk contains an older version of NS and as such must be updated via LiveUpdate to not only bring the defs up to date - but also to update the product.  The reason for the restarts is because the product updates are progressive (staggered as you call it)  in that update #1 must be done and applied via restart prior to update #2  being done and applied via restart prior to update #3 - etc.  Thus it is more productive to download the current version of NS from either Management or using the "latest" URL for the download, thus avoiding all the extra LiveUpdates to update the product.  Please bear in mind LiveUpdate still needs to be run even using the "latest" link as not all the defs will be current until LiveUpdate responds "No Updates found".

Re: Background Idle Cleanup & Reinstalling NS

Thank you for your helpful replies.

I think it was just the pop up that annoyed me so much, soi under the circumstances I will just deactivate the pop ups.

I just downloaded the latest version from Norton and placed that on my extrenal HDD which I use for back ups to software etc.

Many thanks.

You are welcome for the info and please remember that the downloaded latest version from Norton will only be valid until such time as another product update is available. You'd be better off keeping the URL for the download tucked away in a safe place.

Re: Background Idle Cleanup & Reinstalling NS

On a side note if you are using an external hard drive for backups DO NOT leave it plugged in 24/7.
