eraser64.dll start up error

eraser64.dll is not a valid Win32 application appears in a "Run DLL" popup when I start my computer. Running Windows 10 64 bit and yes, eraser64 probably isn't a 32 bit application, so not sure why it is trying to run as one. Have had Norton for over a year but this just started happening a  little while ago.

Not sure what component of Norton this is but it is trying to run from a folder in the Programs(x86) directory tree. Concerned that a Norton component is not running correctly and probably was not installed correctly given it is in the 32 bit directory.

Thanks in advance for assistance

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

Hello

I would recommend that you try a fresh install of your Norton product. Your original program folder is quite old. Version 22.9.0.71 introduced the 64 bit version. A fresh install will change that folder from 22.5 to the 22.9.0.71 folder. You can use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool. Please remember to run Live Update several times and restart when requested to. When all finished with the Updates, you can restart one more time. Also go over the settings because some things were changed.

Please let us know how you make out.

Thanks.

My Norton Data  Folder is in fact 22.5.4.24.  going down the pecking order, my Definitions folder shows last modified 9/27/2016, my SDSDefs shows modified 3/7/217 and opening my most recent file folder 20170306.20 shows Eraser64.dll modified 2/15/2017.

IMHO if kdq's auto LiveUpdate is running properly, their information in regards to the most recent folder date (number) and the Eraser64dll should be updated automatically.

The above info is from a Norton Security Premium system - I am curious if their is something different in the way NIS updates that .dll?

I checked my Win 7 system running Comcast Norton security Suite (a clone of N 360) and although their are slight version and date differences.  Norton Data Folder is 22.5.2.15 and most recent is 20170307.001 (must have auto updated this AM), however, the Eraser64 .dll still shows modified  2/15/2017.

Thus it appears the Eraser64.dll was updated prior to the first 22.9 (22.9.0.68) which was pulled and then re-released on Feb 21.

Perhaps checking in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton internet security\Nortondata\22.5.0.124\Definitions\SDSDefs\most recent dated folder\Eraser64.dll might give a hint as to what is going on.

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

Same problem (eraser64.dll is a not a valid win32 application), I followed the recommendation, and did a fresh install of the Norton product. After the re-install, and full scan, the problem still exist.

Question: is eraser64 is critical component in keeping my computer safe.

Resolution to this problem would be great, or going back to Kaspersky products the other best option.

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

Hello, I am getting the same message as well.  I am running Windows 10 - 64 bit.  I got the message and have ignored it until I had time to research.  The first thing I tried was a fresh install.  I am on version 22.9.0.71 but still get the message.

I am not sure if this is a coincidence but I didn't start getting the message until after a Windows update was run on 02/23/2017. The update was for Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016 x64 Edition - February 2017 (KB890830).  Then it ran the same KB890830 update on 03/15/2017. It is listed in my update history as March 2017 (KB890830).

I have attached a screen shot of the message and my windows update history.

I'm hoping a fix will be found soon.

Thank you,

Lisa

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

I seem to be a bit confused over the findings in this thread in regards to the locations of Program Files which is for 64 bit applications, and Program Files (x86) which holds 32 bit applications - even though users are on 64 bit systems. I understand the backwards compatibility of 64 bit to use 32 bit apps - which are held in the x86 Program Files.

In Program Files I do not even have an entry for my Norton Security with Backup - it is located in Programs (x86), thus I can not find an Eraser64.dll located in Program Files.

Could someone please tell me what I am missing in my thinking?

Sorry for taking this a bit off topic.

Also could those of you who are having this startup error please navigate to Eraser64.dll on your system and seif the date modified is Feb 15, 2017?

If you updated to 22.9, your Norton files will still be in Program Files(x86). Apparently if you do a clean install of Norton it will go to the Program Files.

On my Win 10 system I find Eraser64.dll in   "C:\Program Files(x86)\Norton Security with Backup\NortonData\22.5.4.24\Definitions\SDSDefs\20170317.008\eraser64.dll

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

The Eraser64.dll problem that I was experiencing and reported (posted) was intermittent, and it may have been related to Windows 10 updates, or to viruses. Even after uninstall and reinstall the problem stop, but on the virus definitions files were corrupted.

I did a complete fresh reinstall of Windows 10 and all upgrades, then reinstalled Norton. It's day 3 now, without any problems. I definitely can't pinpoint the what the problem was, however changing Windows settings helped unfreeze and stopped the hangups, removing several malware helped, and fixing several corrupted Windows files also helped, but in the end the problems was still here and intermittent.

The uninstall and reinstall of Windows 10 and Norton worked for me, it's a hassle in getting my computer and dev environment back in order. Good Luck!

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

Seeing the same problem here on Windows 10, 64-Bit before and after doing a reinstall with Norton Remove and Reinstall. They occur during ordinary use, not just at start-up though. The error messages are fairly unobtrusive, but they're still annoying and I frequently come back to my computer the next day to see several of them after I log in.

The first time I did an ordinary remove and reinstall (without the tool) and the issue went away for awhile. After it started recurring, I tried reinstalling again to no avail.

This is the third time I've reinstalled to no avail, though so far I've only seen the error message once.

Around the time I first started seeing this error message, my computer inexplicably changed the default boot drive to an old hard drive on which I had Windows 7 installed from many years ago. I wonder if it's related as I can't recall if that was a 32- or 64-bit installation.

(I was surprised to see that this installation was sufficiently intact to get to the login screen after Windows declared that it needed to repair itself and did so. To avoid potentially damaging my Windows 10 installation, I chose to shutdown instead of logging in and changed the boot drive to the correct drive from the boot screen.)

Also, like the OP, kdq, I also see Norton components in the Program Files (x86) folder, which seems strange if this is a 64-bit application. The folders are NortonInstaller and Norton Security Scan.

Indirectly Related: Thinking that my Norton Security installation might somehow be corrupted by beta graphics driver software from AMD, AMD Radeon Software, I uninstalled that software and reinstalled the stable graphics driver software, AMD Catalyst Software. (My graphics card is so old that AMD only offers a beta take-it-or-leave it version of its newer AMD Radeon Software for the card.)

This software swap didn't fix the Norton Security issue, but Norton LiveUpdate (but not Norton Security itself) crashed during both the respective AMD software uninstall and install processes when the screen flickered to black. Seems like something that should be fixed since none of my other software crashed during those processes.

Yeah, my first thoughts on seeing that message was that Norton Security was compromised and I have malware or my hardware is failing, especially after the boot issue I mentioned. Could still be either for all I know.

I'm still using Malwarebytes here. The only "incompatibility" seems to be Malwarebytes repeatedly trying to probe Norton Security and having its probe accesses denied, which I see in the Norton logs.

(I had Malwarebytes disabled during the Norton reinstall though since the new 3.0 version spiked my CPU usage to 97% with the cooling fan blaring, which had me worried since this isn't a low-powered machine. Apparently, that's considered "normal" though since they claim it's so it scans as fast as possible, so now I have it running alongside the reinstalled Norton. The CPU usage went back to normal after a short time.)

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

What version of Norton was installed? If you use the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool, it will look for an installer that is already on your computer. If the last installer you downloaded was old enough, it may have been a version that detected MBAM as a problem. That detection was fixed soon after that version of Norton was released. That could explain the warning.

Running LiveUpdate would have removed that detection.

I'm guessing your question is directed at kdq since I wasn't having a problem with Malwarebytes being detected as malware. (Though awhile back I did have Norton quarantine a piece of malware in the Malwarebytes folder.)

(To answer your question anyway: I don't know what version of Norton I had installed this morning, but a screenshot I took nine days ago shows a folder with version 22.6.0.142.)

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

peterweb,

I just checked using Norton's help center new version check and it indicated I have the latest version installed. Unless the fix you refer to occurred after 3/17, I'd say that is also still an issue. But regardless, I re-installed MalwareBytes 3.0 Premium today and that seems to work. Hopefully one of the log files submitted will provide the required information for Norton to create a fix for the eraser dll issue..

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

Patrick

You are correct. I mixed up the posts.

kdq

The check for new version only looks for a major product update. ie from 22.x.x. to 23.x.x.. Incremental updates within ver 22 will not be detected by that check. They are just downloaded by LiveUpdate.

You may have the latest version installed, but my point was that if the last installer you have on your computer is a couple of months old, it could have been the version that detected MBAM as a problem. After you ran LiveUpdate, the fix would have been applied.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

I used a anti-malware software during the time I was getting the errors, and it detected several virus. I removed them, and had to replace with the MS system files, but I had other issues.

Then, I bit the bullet and did the clean reinstall...with a clean new hard drive.

It's been almost a week now, after doing a clean reinstall of windows 10 pro and Norton, I've not had the error messages, and all seems to be working.

Also, have windows 10 pro with Norton (same setup) on a Surface Pro, I've never had an issue.

The lingering question is how the virus got there in the first place...?

The lingering question is how the virus got there in the first place...?

You do not say what malware was found. It looks like you picked up a PUP, a Possibly Unwanted Program. While they are annoying, they do not cause damage to your system. Some people actually want the 'Features' offered by these programs. They are usually downloaded alongside a legitimate download when you do not uncheck the option for the additional download.

Norton products concentrate on malware that can damage your system, that is why some PUPs are not detected.

Hello phillip662

You do need good SDS definitions to be protected. Corrupt ones won't protect you completely. Are you getting any quick scans after the SDS definitions? I would suggest a fresh install of your Norton program. You can do this by using the Remove and Reinstall Tool. After using the Tool, be sure to run Live Update a few times and restarting when asked to. Upon completion, you should be on version 22.9.1.12

Re: eraser64.dll start up error

When the problem with error popup started, my computer was very slow and freezing. I started by uninstalling apps one by one, the computer performance increased, and use the Remove Norton Tool, and reinstall Norton (downloaded fresh copy), the problem did not go away, however while downloading virus defs, another error indicated the defs files were corrupt. I then used another malware dectector, which found several virus on my computer. Sorry, I didn't copy that info down, but I recall they were not PUPs, they marked in RED, and they were Windows system files (dlls) in the system32 folder.

That when I decide to do a complete clean reinstall of Windows and Norton, on a new hard drive, which I reformatted for the reinstall.

Over the past week, I've reinstalled all of apps one by one, thus far I have NOT had any errors, and my unit is running smooth.

I thought at first that maybe it was a incompatibility issue with one of the Windows 10 Pro updates, but now I have all the current updates installed and NO PROBLEM!

I have the same setup on another unit, the only difference is hardware, one is a Toshiba laptop and the other is a Surface 4 Pro, both running Windows 10 Pro with Norton, and basically the same apps. The latter, I've had no problems it with whatsoever.

I do believe my Toshiba was infected with a virus, how it got there is beyond me. I'm careful in not download software from the download sites. But, we can all be careful and careful, but there that one that gets through.

I've been using Norton for a long time, and for a couple of years used Kaspersky, but I'm back. Only 1 issue in many years of use in today Internet environment, I would say is pretty darn good!
