Unable to uninstall NIS 09, full system scans up to 5000 files only

Hi all,

My parents' computer had been hit with exactly thirty threats (adwares to spywares to trojans!!) (they're not too updated with the internet world = popups). I was able to clean it by using Malwarebytes (Norton did not alert for any of this except for two). Continuing, still now, Norton keeps popping up these errors message; something about SONAR (sp?) and more. I am trying to do a full scan of the computer, but it stops at around 5100 files and it says complete. Plus, one moment my auto-protect is off, the next is about the firewall or advanced-protection-something being disabled, etc.  I cannot even open up the "settings" page to customize the settings or anything.

I want to uninstall this product and reinstall it, but I tried the Control Panel > Add/Remove, the Uninstaller from the Norton folder, and the Norton Removal Tool. Didn't work. It just stayed on the screen about identifying Norton products, etc and stuck there. I left it on for a good three hours and not an inch. Then the computer just froze up and I would hold down the power button to force-shut the computer down.

Can someone please help me how to remove it? Thanks for any valuable info.

Best,

Lily

Re: Unable to uninstall NIS 09, full system scans up to 5000 files only

Hi!  Welcome to the Forum!

Do not remove Norton untill your system is clean.  You still have some malware on your system it sounds like.  Can you do the following for us?  It will help us get the information to remove the malware.

Please download GMER from http://www.gmer.net and run the program. Select "Scan" and then "Save" the log. Do nothing else with the GMER program as it can harm your system if used incorrectly. Then attach the log file as a text file to a post here. The Add Attachments link is below the orange Post button. It will be reviewed for possible malware and we will get back to you. Again, thanks for your help in this.

Re: Unable to uninstall NIS 09, full system scans up to 5000 files only

Hi Dbrisendine and Stu,

I tried running the Gmer, but about four minutes through, the computer popped up a blue screen and shut down. I got the following message:

"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options, such as chaching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanded Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0xE1987000, 0x0000000, 0x00000000, 0xEF476125)"

The second set of number could have been (0xE1981000) and last set (0xEF416125). I'm not too sure even of my own handwriting. Hehe. So I'm thinking I will have to run the Gmer in Safe Mode...? I'm not very tech-savvy, so I am very happy for your help. Thank you very much!

Re: Unable to uninstall NIS 09, full system scans up to 5000 files only

Hi t0astypbj:

Give it a try in safe mode and just check the first half of the boxes.  If that goes well, run it again in safe mode and check the last half of the boxes.

Re: Unable to uninstall NIS 09, full system scans up to 5000 files only

Hi all,

Well, my sister came home and used Ghost to just restore everything to its factory settings before I was able to get to it. But I want to ask, since it's restored, is it safe to say that all the malwares and threats are also deleted?  Scanned with Norton and Malwarebytes, everything so-far seem fine. Should I run something else just to make sure? Thanks for all your time and help. Greatly, truly appreciate it all.

If Norton and Malwarebytes are both happy, you should be fine.  Maintain regular scans for a while.
