ImgBurn all of a sudden been identified as potential malicious

Hello,

Since last summer I use ImgBurn to burn DVD's. I never experienced any issues with this application, it seemed to do what it needs to do.

Today Norton Internet Security identified the installer file of ImgBurn as potential malicious (setupimgburn_2.5.8.0.exe). Therefore I removed all the installed ImgBurn applications from all of my PC's. Just to be sure...

Does anyone know why this application has been identified as potential malicious all of a sudden?

Thanks in advance,

SJW

Re: ImgBurn all of a sudden been identified as potential malicious

It would depend on what Norton detected in the file. It could be a newer detection method introduced with a LiveUpdate to malware features of the product.

You could submit the setup file to www.virustotal.com

If it comes back clean, you can report it as a false positive detection.  You can report false positive indications here https://submit.symantec.com/false_positive/

As it was the installer that was detected, I would suggest is probably is a false positive. If the program itself was infected, other levels of protection in the Norton product would have flagged it as you tried to use it.

The results bjm_ links to from Virus Total show adware seems to be included with the installer.

Hopefully, there is a way to decline the 'added feature' when you install the product.

So imgburn is totally infected even though thousands use it?

In the EULA for IMGBurn, if you read it, it is a condition of installation that you agree to also install Open Candy PUP.

It's had open candy added to the installer for a few years now.  Some versions even installed it when you opted out.

You have to be very very careful if you install it and read every single screen and find the option to not install open candy or anything other than the program.

Dave, it's in the EULA that you agree to install OpenCandy with ImgBurn.  There is no opt out, or there wasn't last time I tried it.

Re: ImgBurn all of a sudden been identified as potential malicious

I went through this false/positive thing with ImageBurn a couple years ago.  Image Burn is ok.  The problem at that time was the addition of crapware bundled with it on the site. (sort of like when you update flash or java and you have to look real carefully and uncheck all the other crap they will install if you are in a hurry and not paying attention.

I have updated my copy of ImageBurn whenever it updates and still use it regularly.   GREAT software

MajorGeeks claim to offer a "clean, no OpenCandy version".
