Renew old version (21.x) with new version (22.x) activation code?

Does anyone know if a new activation code from the current offerings of "Norton Security" will work for renewing the older version "Norton Internet Security" 21.x?  I believe the current Norton Security products being sold are version 22.x, and it's actually a completely different software than 21.x, not just a name change, which is why I ask about the compatibility of using 22.x activation codes for 21.x products.  I currently run Norton Internet Security 21.x on several Windows 7 PC's, and I do not wish to upgrade to version 22.x at this time.  Thank you.

@outerlimit Unfortunately you will need to contact support chat. They may be able to assist you.

Re: Renew old version (21.x) with new version (22.x) activation code?

If I may.

Norton does allow you to use the keys from the newer Norton Security line to activate older, ie NIS products. The only catch is that you need to be using a similar product. That is if you are using older 360 that has backup function, you have to use a Norton Security Premium key as that also has the backup.

So for your NIS, you will have to have at least the Norton Security Deluxe. Just be aware that you will be limited to the same number of installs that your NIS originally came with. Usually 3, even though you are buying a 5 device NS Deluxe. Although, you may still be able to use the last 2 seats for installing NS on another computer, or you may be able to install Norton Mobile Security on your mobile devices.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Renew old version (21.x) with new version (22.x) activation code?

Hi outerlimit:

Further to peterweb's post about product keys, you might want to read RLWA32's thread Support of NIS 21.7.0.11 Discontinued before making a final decision on whether this might be a good time to make the switch to a newer Norton v22.x product.

Like you I preferred using NIS v21.7.0.11, but several major security vulnerabilities in Norton and Symantec products were reported by Tavis Ormandy of Google's Project Zero in June 2016 - see Tavis' blog post <here> as well as the Symantec security advisory SYM16-010.  The only Norton products that are now patched for these vulnerabilities are v22.7.x and higher, so NIS v21.7.0.11 is currently vulnerable.

Symantec strongly advises that all users upgrade to the latest v22.x product (currently v22.9.1.12). The only exception would be if you owned an older Win XP machine with a CPU that does not support the SSE2 instruction set since these old machines will throw an error message when Norton v22.x is installed - see the support article Message: "An unsupported processor has been detected. This version of the product requires a processor that supports the SSE2 instruction set…" appears when I install my Norton product.

Re: Renew old version (21.x) with new version (22.x) activation code?

Thanks for the info.  When I upgraded last May, version 21.x was still being "fully" supported, getting the same patches as version 22.x.  Now I guess it's not.  I was not crazy about version 22.x because of the many bugs reported for more than a year when it first came out; also I'm not crazy about the "primarily" cloud-based protection with severely limited off-line protection.  Alas, it seems like most firewall/antivirus products have moved to cloud-based, so maybe I should consider Norton version 22.x.  Is it ok now for Windows 7 64-bit machines?

Re: Renew old version (21.x) with new version (22.x) activation code?

Hello outerlimit

I am currently on a Win 7 Pro 64 bit computer using IE 11. I have Norton Security with Backup which is now known as Norton Security Premier. It is good for up to 10 devices depending on what part of the world you are located in. It also has Backup which you don't have to use. I'm not using it. It's good for PC's, Macs, Tablets, and Cell Phones, both IOS and Android. Version 22.9.1.12 is the latest. Shop around for the best price as long as it's a legal site and legal key. They are all downloads now. No more CD's,

Thanks.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit NSBU 22.17.0.183 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

It is still getting all the patches and definition updates, except for the vulnerability that is listed in lmacri's post above. So for maximum protection, you should move up to the 22.x.x.x version.

Unfortunately, you will probably never see a product that is 100% error free. But if you are referring to the initial problems seen when v 22 first came out, those have all been addressed.

Hi outerlimit:

Based on my own experience, if you renew a NIS 3-PC license with a NS Deluxe (5-Device, any OS) or NS Premium (10-Device with backup, any OS) product key you are still limited to the terms of your old NIS license (i.e, you can only install NIS on a max. of 3 Windows PCs if that's what your NIS license currently allows).  That wasn't an issue for me when I was using NIS since I only needed protection for one Windows PC but it might be another factor in your decision if you need protection for more than 3 devices or have devices with different OSs (PCs, Mac, smartphones, and tablets).

The support article Comparison between the various Norton products and their features has a product comparison chart of all supported Norton products, including your NIS.

Re: Renew old version (21.x) with new version (22.x) activation code?

Thanks all for your replies.  My current Norton Internet Security 21.x version has 10 licenses and after a few different phone calls and chats, all the reps would only quote a 10 license purchase for $199 if I wanted to renew Norton Internet Security and not upgrade to the current product line 22.x.  I don't understand where they get the $199 from as it's not part of any current Norton product that is being sold.  I originally bought it last year for $30 from ebay.

Ah well, it's a mute point anyway, because if not all patches and vulnerabilities are being addressed in v21.x same as v22.x, then there's no point in keeping it.  I'm going to let it expire on May 5, after which it will enter a 30-day trial period (at least that's what it's done in the past).  During that time, I will remove version 21.x from one of the computers and do free trial of Security Deluxe.  In the end, I am glad that I was having difficulty buying the old version on ebay, as I was enlightened here that v21.x is vulnerable and is being left behind by Norton.

It may have done that in the past, but now the product stops working all together when the subscription expires.

I you had a 10 device subscription for NIS, it sounds like you may have had a Small Business package. The reason you cannot find the same thing offered now is because NIS is no longer for sale. If you purchase a 10 device copy of Norton Security Premium, you will easily find if for well under $100.
