Quick question about Norton's disk optimization

Hey guys. I was just wondering if the auto disk optimization feature of norton auto detects when a drive is a SSD. Correct me if I'm wrong but its not only pointless to defrag a SSD but it puts un needed wear and tear on it with all the read/write cycles. Will norton automatically not defrag a drive if its a SSD.

I know Windows 10 built in defrag tool detects SSD's and wont defrag them but "trims" them.

Re: Quick question about Norton's disk optimization

As far as I did research a while ago, Norton itself does not defrag SSD. It calls Windows defrag to do all of the tasks for disk optimization when necessary. If you are using Windows 10, it tends to be relatively smart about SSD defragmenting, although it does sometimes defragment your SSD, which is less than ideal.

If you want to be safe, you can disable "Disk Optimization" and "Idle Time Optimizer" you can do it like this:

  • Settings > Task Scheduling > uncheck Disk Optimization.

  • Settings > Administrative Settings > Idle Time Optimizer > Off > Apply.

 Hope this helped. Good luck!

 You are mistaken!!!

Norton uses Windows tool =>  does TRIM + defragmentation (as for HDD), if VSS (Windows service) is enabled, if VSS is disabled - only TRIM.

Don't work for me: https://community.norton.com/en/forums/idle-time-optimizer-doesnt-turn

Very interesting. Didn't know the norton thing was just a front end for the built in windows tool. I apperantly set windows not to do any automatic optimizing to my SSD about 2 months ago and forgot. I'm not using Norton for now so I don't have to worry about settings with it.

I checked the history of windows optimizing and defraging my drives with PowerShell and there is one time where it says it defraged C drive (my SSD). I guess some point after that was when I unchecked C on the list of drives to optimize once a month because it never defragged it again thankfully.

Thanks for the tip!
