Ethernet connections dropping

I am having a problem. All of my Ethernet wired devices (2 Windows 10 desktop PCs, 2 HP printers, 2 WD NAS, several D-Link cameras and a DVR, a TV, a receiver) loose network (LAN) connectivity within a minute after restarting the CORE and resetting the switch. I have Trendnet switches. My 4 wireless devices (2 Android phones and 2 thermostats) continue to work fine.

The status/devices screen of the app shows they were connected and then an end time of those connections. Intermittently, one or more of the devices (never a PC or printer) will show up, then drop again.

I have restarted and reset the CORE, changed every setting (and changed them back) for hours with no difference. I don't remember the firmware version of the CORE, but I tried manual update and was told it already has the latest version (after updating during the initial install and the reset install).

All of these devices worked fine on my Netgear router prior to installing the CORE, and they all work fine now that I've taken out the CORE and put the Netgear back in.

Since the devices and switches are identical for both routers and the wireless devices work fine on both, it seems there's some problem with the wired Ethernet side of the CORE router (perhaps related to Trendnet switches).

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

Same here Garlen,  I have Netgear switches and experiencing the same problems and have done everything you have done except change out the core. I also noticed when doing a speednet test that before I installed the core I had a solid steady 68mbps. Installed the core, now the test is all over the board and can't get over 55mbps with some very big dips in the test and I would guess that's when I'm getting disconnected. This is a big problem and hope it's addressed soon otherwise it's going to get replaced. I would of replaced it by now but gave my old netgear modem/router to a family member and there not having any problems.

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

The real issue I'm having is loss of LAN connectivity. The 2 PCs show yellow or red in the connectivity icon, no way to fix it. The other LAN devices drop off the online device status screen in the app, but our 2 phones can still access the Internet through the CORE as can the 2 thermostats.

So, this appears in my case to be an Ethernet LAN issue, which is really weird since Ethernet routers have been around since dinosaurs ruled the earth, Ethernet connectivity is Basic Router 101, and I would have expected any issues to be related to the radio side of the CORE...

I may end up with a large and expensive paperweight, but I hope this can be diagnosed and patched soonest.

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

I can't provide a definitive reason, but the problem is fixed on my Core after the 4th install/reset as well as resetting the main switch and each individual device (all done 3 times before.).

I would suggest letting the Core sit for a few hours, then resetting everything from the Core out.

My NAS lost Ethernet connection?

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

At the moment my Core is a pretty paperweight. I am finding it impossible to work from home which is critical for people in my area following a recent hurricane. I have tried resetting / reinstalling the core several times without any luck and have much better things to be doing right now. I expect Symantec to offer a simple solution to fix this otherwise the device to me is pretty much unusable and I will have to revert back to my old set-up. I guess it has made my network more secure if it can't connect to the Internet.

The firmware is up-to-date and all devices have been reset before.

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

Hi @RWellsTX - People have been having good results contacting Norton Support during on-boarding to help get their Norton Core online. https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/contact-phone   or  1-855-815-2726.

Have you given them a try yet?

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

Hi Dave, I did reach out and it now seems to be fixed. By default the 2.4GHz and 5 Ghz wireless networks have the same name, so was asked to disabled this and change the channels being used to defined ones rather than auto. It now seems to be working.

I have to admit I'm a bit surprised both networks would have the same name by default, never seen that before on any routers I've configured. Anyway, seems to be working for now. :-)

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

Good news, @RWellsTX! - Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here on. Thank you for letting us know what the problem was.

My Linksys EA4500 was the same way, both networks had the same name.

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

I have a weird problem with my wired connections. I plug in the cable from my modem, then my desktop computer, then a cable to a Netgear 8 port switch. If I plug anything into my 3rd and last port I will drop one of the 3 connections. In other words only 2 ports will work. I can switch them up, but only 2 of the ethernet ports will work. Help, it's driving me crazy as I still have quite a few components that I leave wired.

Also, I would like access to the router and settings via my desktop computer. I have my main desktop computer that I run my house with and would like to keep it that way.

Thank you.

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

rickvanv The Core router doesn't support MAC or Windows at the present time. iOS and Android are supported.

Answering your other question, setup the core router in bridged mode. Here is the article with instructions:

Re: Ethernet connections dropping

I don't have a modem/router combo, I have a modem that hooks directly to the Core. From there one of the lan ports go directly to my main desktop computer. The other 2 lan ports go to a Netgear 8 port switch each. The two switches go out to other computers, NAS units, cameras, TVs, printers and two exterior long range wireless antennas. (I have a very large property.) My problem is I can only use 2 of the lan ports. If I hook up all three one become DEAD. I can switch them around but one is always DEAD. I always have to move around the cables to get them to hook up, sometimes when I move the Core I will drop a connection. Pretty sure that's not supposed to happen. Something wrong with this Core

Do you perhaps have some sort of a loop in your network? If you can follow an ethernet cable out of a switch (to other switches/devices) and then back to the first switch without traversing the same cable a second time you have a loop. Loops are bad.

You could also have a loop due to a wireless bridge, or malfunctioning hardware that has turned a port into hardwired loopback.

A logical diagram of your network could be helpful. (it doesn't have to show where things are, just which ports are plugged into the what).
