Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I was very excited to upgrade my wifi router to the Norton CORE. I've been a long time Norton product user, but this product lacks one of the best functions available on today's wifi routers. It doesn't support USB storage. The Linksys router that I upgraded from even had one USB storage slot on it.

I spent several hours with technical support on this issue and the tech dialed into my PC to even try mapping a network drive, no dice.

This product needs a firmware update immediately to support USB network storage devices. If this feature isn't added, you'll make many new users unhappy and the return department is going to be paying for lots of postage with with users returning the Norton CORE.

The last tech I spoke with said that Norton is working on this, we'll see if that's true or not. I'm going to give it another few weeks and if no firmware upgrades come out, my recommendation is to stay away from this product unless you don't use network storage through your router.

Thank you for your time and reading my response, I believe it to be fair for users and Norton.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Until they fix this you can set your Linksys router to bridge mode and plug it into the core Ethernet port.   You can use it as you would before.   I have done this with my WD Passport and it works.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Thanks everyone! I think it's a good product, but please update the CORE to handle direct USB mass storage devices. Thanks again for sending the helpful links. Not perfect, but good enough until a more permanent solution presents itself.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Did you then use the USB port on the linksys router to plug in your USB drive? Also, did you disable WIFI on your linksys router?

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I used the USB port on my linksys router to connect the network drive. Now visible on my other PC's. The Linksys Router is an EA6400 with AC1600. I didn't disable wifi on the router, should I? Pro's/Con's? It connects directly to the Norton CORE through Cat 6 cable into it's ethernet port. The CORE seems to be happy.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Perhaps I misunderstand how bridge mode works. Isn't your Core giving out DHCP addresses to your network devices. It should be for you to get protection for those devices. But also, isn't your linksys router also giving out DHCP addresses?

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Both are giving out DHCP right now. No conflicts. My EA 6400 isn't in bridge mode right now.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I think the Core router will see only your Linksys router that is plugged into the core network port as ONE device. That one ONE device (the Linksys) will funnel all the traffic from WIFI devices that are assigned IP address by the Linksys router. Thus, the Core has no way to identify the individual devices you connect via WIFI to your Linksys router. Does that make sense. Also, there could be confilicts when a wireless device requests an IP address from a DHCP server. You have two functioning DHCP servers on your network. They (presumably) have two separate IP subnets.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Makes good sense. Should I shut off the DHCP on the Linksys Router?

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I also had to disable firewalls on the Linksys router to gain access, not ideal.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

So, in it's current state, I just disabled the wireless access on the Linksys router because the firewalls need to be disabled to access the USB drive on the old router. Until we hear back from Norton on a potential fix, this is 'as good as it gets' for accessing USB connected network storage devices through an old router into the Norton CORE.

Hi @Weathermem,

Thank you for posting your feedback on the Norton Community forum. I'll take this to the team, so it can be reviewed. Thanks.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Thank you Gayathri! The product is 'almost there'. One other small request, on the Norton CORE phone app please show the network traffic that is being 'scanned' and 'Threats blocked'. Either on a separate link or in a monthly e-mail etc. Maybe even through Norton Security. A tap on the home screen should open another area to show these threats.

Thanks again!!!

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I'm glad I bumped into this post by accident, looking for a different problem...

I was not aware those USBs do not support HD and that was my plan next week!

Obviously, I'll use my 'OLD' N600 Netgear to do the same, until Norton fixes it!

Thank you all!

Gayathri_R do you have an update on when a USB storage device will be incorporated into the Norton CORE? It's been three weeks now. Thank you.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Hello Weathermem Norton will post the updates as they are released to the forums thread listed below. Subscribe to the thread and you get a notification as updates are released. FYI, the Norton Core router will auto-update as well as it detects new firmware has been released.

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I’m already subscribed, but the Core does it on its own. But it’s good to know when, rather the “bumping” into it as I view notifications! Thank you!

Hmmm! Interesting... Two things; one, there is no manual update using the iOS app, second, it’s not updating! I’m not too worried, I’m sure it will eventually, it had on it’s own so far. But perhaps Norton ought to reflect on its dox of the iOS version!

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Skoutariotis Your iOS app version should be version 1.18 per this thread below.

A solution was also found here in this thread:

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I'm sorry, I'm confused. My iOS app is up to date, and never had problems downloading app. I was referring to the Core firmware update which by the way it did update by itself about 3 hrs ago. And no, there is no manual update on the iOS version.

Thank you!

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

Thanks for the links back to the main update page. I just plugged a USB thumb drive into Norton CORE again tonight, still no access for network storage through the provided (2) USB's on the CORE. When will this feature be added to the Norton CORE? I'm still using a 'very' backward method of plugging my old router directly into the CORE for access. This is inconvenient. I appreciate any timeline that you may have for this feature being added.

Last night the Core updated its firmware to 202. Anyone know if they incorporated storage device support on those USBs?

I'm hoping that Symantec will reply to this thread again soon. This seems like such an easy and useful fix. Why include two 3.0 ports if the device never intended to use them for network storage and access?

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I agree! AND build a pretty looking device, presentable in plain view, who’s gonna hookup a printer to it, especially since MOST printers now days are WiFi ready?! AWESOME opportunity to create your own cloud, especially how cheap HDs are now days!

Any news on HD support on the USB ports?

Re: Norton CORE - No USB Storage Support

I haven't heard any updates Jim. I'm hoping it will be soon. I have my old router still running because of the lack of on-board USB HD storage. Has anyone heard when this update will happen or if its even possible with the current hardware configuration.

You cant tell me that a tech in the Norton lab hasn't figured out how to install a 3.0 storage option yet ;)

Thanks for any updates!!

Mark
