Multiple Core issues resolved

To everyone who reads this - There are multiple threads here on the Core forums with a wide range of issues which I believe MAY be resolved with a simple "factory reset" of your Core routers. Before this morning, my security score, from the outset had been 252, FIOS modem/router device in NAT-NAT config. due to TV/VOIP services requiring the FIOS modem to route those services. Here is my boilerplate: Android app version 1.22 / Core firmware version 171009_193 *I have NOT setup a Guest Network at this point and time. All devices are under "shared and monitored", people shows all devices as "unlimited".

Issues before the factory reset / current status:

- The FIOS NAT-NAT configuration was a HUGE hit on my overall security score - Resolved

- Device OS's were being inaccurately reported - Resolved

- Low security score with a 32 character password on ALL networks - Resolved

- Devices previously on the network were NOT dropping even after the 30 day limit had been reached **Monitoring this one

- Wifi devices would see random freezing on IE11 / Internet access speeds were terribly horrible - Resolved

Issues remaining:

- Core app/Core still doesn't detect Norton Antivirus as being installed on the devices having it. Thus my score has dropped to 377 from the previous 477. 100 points I mean really? The app took forever to make the manual changes I input these devices HAVE Norton installed. It eventually did then my score returned to 477 again.

- Device "Model" information remains hung at "identifying" on all devices detected on the network

Note: When I performed the factory reset I DID NOT power down the Core but DID power cycle the FIOS modem. Setup initially failed with the error "the cloud could not be reached, please try again". Upon my second attempt the Core successfully setup. No issues noted other than posted above. To date I have NEVER experienced any service drops with the Core that I have. Today's reset was to attempt to clear up some small issues that were constantly annoying. Over all satisfied with the results.

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Update: Device "Model" information remains hung at "identifying" on all devices detected on the network - Resolved partially

*The Device manufacturer in the Core app can be manually added by tapping in that area. A list, although not complete will appear. You can then select the one closest matching your device maker and save. Hope this list becomes more complete as time goes by.

*The device model in the Core app can also likewise be edited by tapping in that area then manually editing the model of your device and save.

Cheers

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Factory reset? Does that mean I have to set the core up again? No thanks.

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

I just RESTARTED the core and now have firmware 171102_202 where it previously said No Version Available. But my score still did not improve. My passwords were all rated high when I first set them, although I had to tinker with them to get them that way, but the score has always been low, citing weak passwords. My passwords are short, but contain all necessary and previously acceptable characters. So, what do I do now? I also have had problems connecting to Wikipedia through core dns on my phone, although that fixed itself, at least temporarily, by setting to ISP dns and back to core dns.

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Hello sborsher. Your "score" may indeed be "low" depending on your setup situation. For instance, I have FIOS where my FIOS device MUST remain in the loop when setup WITH its internal DHCP remaining enabled. This is due to TV/VOIP phone services dependent on it for those services. I then could NOT setup the FIOS device in "bridged" mode so as to make it a pure gateway, only giving an external IP for the Core to recognize and setup to. I had to use a NAT-NAT setup where the core goes into a LAN port on the FIOS device then setup from there. My score remained at a steady 252.

Because I was having some smaller issues, which was the origin of this thread I did another factory reset on the core when the firmware was at version 193. I had the setup REMOVE the core from my account entirely, then setup the Core again. The app remembered the previous settings and passwords and completed. My score jumped to an amazing 477 AND has remained there without so much as changing any settings. Performing a factory reset in this manner INCREASED my security score therefore it is my recommendation for others as a possible solution to low security scores.

Cheers

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Yes, I tried every possible setup, including double bridging the Quantum router. I spent three weeks on it, and finally settled on what you have; mostly for ease of recovery. I have all TiVo boxes on MOCA, with an independent MOCA converter. I have had no system issues now in several months; just these annoying core anomalies. On your recommendation I will try the factory reset, which I have not done since I got the system stabilized. Even if I have to re-enter the passwords, at least it will tell me if they are still "acceptable". I also have a router running as a WiFi extender in bridge mode, but the core cannot tell what I have for passwords in that, so it is possible to compromise your security without the core knowing it. A suggestion should be added to make the passwords the same, or as secure, as indicated by the core.

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Great!! Just use the router that's in extender mode with its DHCP disabled. Pure gateway.

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

I keep the Quantum active with DHCP so I can log into it and check the Internet when the core loses its mind. It hasn't done that in a while, so I might bridge out the Quantum at some point, or I might decide to spend some time on the phone with Verizon to get them to switch from MOCA to LAN; never my favorite option. When I had the Quantum set up as double bridge and did a failure test, the core lost its mind so badly that I had to do three factory resets before it recovered. I don't mind doing a little beta testing, but I won't stand firm any Blue Screen of Death equivalents.

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Hello again breda. The score you have may indeed be the score that the Core will give for the setup you have. Remember, that a score is only a score. However having a higher score is always a nice thing to have. My ONT connects directly to the existing cable throughout the house as it is routed to every room where we have a TV. There is a drop in the front room where the main computers and 2 rack servers are located and it connects to my FIOS modem/router via cable there. My Core is then connected to LAN port 1 on the FIOS router with its wifi disabled and all connections removed except for the IPT's for TV and VOIP. All else goes through the Core itself. It sounds as though the MOCA setup you have is causing most if not all of your score issues but that may be the only option for you with the devices you have on your network.

Cheers

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Hello again. Your ISP device is a straight forward connection directly to the Core. If you have access to the setting in that modem set up the modem in full bridged mode. http://forums.xfinity.com/t5/Your-Home-Network/Comcast-router-in-bridge-mode/td-p/1789896

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Core DNS stopped working 100% again. It doesn't like Wikipedia, and other informational sites.

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

sborsher If Core doesn't give you a blocked site notification or show there was a website blocked due to something malicious I'd say your browser is the issue. I have DPI set to normal on my Core and get to those site just fine. See screenshot.

Re: Multiple Core issues resolved

Ok breda. First off the link I sent was the only one comparable not knowing your provider. Knowing that your modem appears to be a personal unit and its not on the approved list of routers for your ISP: https://faq.wavehome.com/hc/en-us/articles/227831667-Compatible-modems-and-WiFi-Routers

For that reason your modem may work with your provider yet have issues doing so. And cannot be bridged since it already performs as a gateway. In a final synopsis I would check with your provider for compatibility if you have not done so already. Your low score very well may be the best you can obtain with your current hardware and configuration.

Cheers
