CLICKED ON LINK IN SPAM E MAIL BY MISTAKE!

Hi!

Some advice needed please. I received a suspicious e mail in my AOL spam folder and stupidly clicked on the link. It said something like A.....(my girlfriend name))  wants to share something with you and the word STREAM was in the link address.`s I clicked on it  because it said it came from my girlfriend and actually gave her name BUT the sender e mail address was NOT  her e mail address...although it came from another AOL e mail address. When I clicked on the link it took me to another page but it said ("PAGE NOT FOUND")...although the british telecom logo was shown .. I closed the page and received NO warning from My NORTON 360 about any threats or attacks. I have run a Norton 360 full scan and a malware bytes scan..NO threats were found..just the usual tracking cookies which were deleted. My laptop is behaving normally. PLEASE let me know if my laptop is likely to have malware or spyware on it? .ALSO my main question is does NORTON 360 protect against malware. phishing and virus`s in E MAIL LINKS in the same way as when your browsing the web? In other words if the link was dodgy and contained spyware etc....would I have got a warning from NORTON 360 on screen ..,which I did not get when I clicked on the link. I have changed my e mail password and my girlfriend has too. .. I am using windows 7..Many thanks... D

Re: CLICKED ON LINK IN SPAM E MAIL BY MISTAKE!

As you got a page not found message, I would suggest that someone else had already reported that page to the provider of that page and it was removed.

As Norton did not flag anything at the time, or in your subsequent scans with Norton and MBAM, you should be good to go.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: CLICKED ON LINK IN SPAM E MAIL BY MISTAKE!

Hi ..many thanks for your reply. Since I posted my question I ran Malwarebytes free scan a further two times making 3 in total. The first 2 scans revealed "no threats" BUT ....the 3rd scan with malwarebytes revealed a TROJAN MALWARE in my user/app/data.cache...which I quarantined and deleted immediately. I can`t understand why Malwarebytes didn't detect this Trojan in the first 2 scans?. Do you think this Trojan is a coincidence or is it something to do with the dodgy link I clicked on?. I have since run a Norton full system scan AND Norton Power Eraser and no threats were found. If the Trojan was to do with the link and I have got rid of it is it to late and someone would now have my sensitive information? Any further advice greatly appreciated..thanks!

I agree with peterweb that you were likely directed to a page that had already been taken down.  It is impossible to say if what Malwarebytes found is significant or related to the link you clicked.  Malwarebytes often finds remnants of previously removed malware that no longer poses any threat to your system.  You would need to provide the details of what MBAM found.

Re: CLICKED ON LINK IN SPAM E MAIL BY MISTAKE!

If you have been using your computer online between the multiple Malwarebytes scans, it could be something you picked up then.

If you want to have someone check your system, contact Norton Support and ask them for the Virus Protection Promise. Explain your concerns and they can remotely access your system and use special tools to scan your system.    www.norton.com/contactcs

Re: CLICKED ON LINK IN SPAM E MAIL BY MISTAKE!

Hello again.

One final word on this subject. It has been 6 days since I stupidly clicked on the link in a scammers e mail..( see previous posts) and after repeated  scans etc....my laptop has been and still is behaving normally (no popups, no slow down, no new icons etc)...although I do realise that spyware etc does not always show signs. My final question is this. Would it take some time for a scammer/hacker to analyse any information he has got from me (maybe days or weeks) and then start taking action against my laptop OR would any action by the hacker have been almost instant after clicking on that link?

Thanks Dimmy
