Norton Live Update Causes a BSOD on windows 10 Pro

Hi. This is a shoutout to anyone using Norton Security on a windows 10 pro machine. I have a brand new desktop computer. The first thing I did, about 2 weeks ago when i got it from the shop, was installing Norton. Pretty much straight away I got BSOD's, ussually 15 minutes after booting up.

It took me a while to figure out the cause: it turns out to be the live update of Norton. Once it has scanned and downloaded the new virus patch, it goes into installing it and causes a WHEA_UNCONTROLABLE_ERROR bsod.

A few days ago, it actually installed the patch successfully. So I was happy, thinking now the faulty patch was finally removed.

This morning deliberatly ran the liveupdater again, and upon installing the updates, windows again crashes on cue. (Always giving the same WHEA error). My window OS is completely up to date. I've switched off the live updates for now.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Dave

Re: Norton Live Update Causes a BSOD on windows 10 Pro

Hello greyback31

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Since you have a new computer, did you check it out for any free security trials? If there are any, it has to be removed using the removal tool from the other security program. Do you have any other real time security program installed?

Please turn off Fast Startup. Computers need to completely shut down for updates and other files to completely get installed. If you normally just turn off your computer, it is not getting completely installed...

Have a Nice Day and

Thanks.

Re: Norton Live Update Causes a BSOD on windows 10 Pro

Hello Floplot,

Thank you very much for your reply and suggestions.

The computer is custom built by a professional team, it didn't come with pre-installed software or any other security trial programs.
I've been a Norton user all the way back to windows XP so I installed the most up-to-date version from my account. There shouldn't be any other realtime security programs on the pc, unless windows 10 pro comes with something installed without my knowledge.
I can't seem to find any on my system though.

I've turned off Fast Startup as you suggested, it was on by default, it seems.

So today, I switched the live update back on and it crashed yet again on cue when it's installing the update.
I noticed it was a tiny update, like 3 mb or something, that was supposed to be installed...

So the bsod happens, it reboots, and then I open norton again. Immidiately I get the notice my comp is at risk and has the red icon.
So I click the LiveUpdate button again and now it suddenly downloads a 63 mb patch, pretty huge compared to a few minutes ago.
I expected it to crash again but this one seemed to get installed successfully.

So, untill tomorrow, when there's probably a new patch, we'll see how it'll handle that one.
I'll post the results whether good or bad.

Re: Norton Live Update Causes a BSOD on windows 10 Pro

Hi,

Small update regarding my situation: I've updated 3 evenings in a row the liveupdate patches and have not *knock on wood* experienced any more BSOD's so far. :)

I'll keep monitoring it closely and update this post towards the end of next week.

Re: Norton Live Update Causes a BSOD on windows 10 Pro

Hi Floplot,

After more than a week, time for me to post an extensive update.
I wish I could report it was all solved but sadly that is not the case...

After last week, I manually updated the liveUpdate once every evening, and for more than a week it worked like a charm.
No more BSOD's what so ever, not during the installation of the visus patch nor during the rest of the weekly period.

That was until yesterday evening, march 6th, when for some reason, the virus patch it downloaded was 106 mb, instead of the usual 7mb - a sign that something was different.
And when installing that patch, it crashed on that with another BSOD.
The comp reboots and after it's all ready to go, I reinstall the patch ( it downloads only 70 mb this time - maybe part of the update was already installed) and it crashes again, more so that after rebooting, Norton refuses to open.

I call it a night and now this evening, Norton gives me a notice of a 8504, 104 error and says it needs to completely remove and reinstall Norton.

Which I do and it did install succesfully.

But this is getting quite tedious, I mean how long will it last this time?

Am I the only person who experiences this particular problem?
(fast startup has been turned off during the entire period, I double checked this).

Any scans are negative and show no viruses.

Re: Norton Live Update Causes a BSOD on windows 10 Pro

Hello Floplot,

Yes, all drivers are up to date.

As the problem returned again yesterday, and even this morning after yet another new patch update, I finally decided to uninstall Norton completely and use alternative software.

I still have Norton running on my laptop, which is doing fine (win 8.1).

It's annoying because I can't really pinpoint if it's Norton, or windows, who's the faulty product here. But I'm at my limit here of what I can do to fix this. Everything's up to date and I've (re)installed Norton at least 2 times now to try to fix it. And all that it didn't work.
So I'm curious to see if the problem persists with the new software.

Thanks for your assitance though, it is appreciated :)

Re: Norton Live Update Causes a BSOD on windows 10 Pro

Information from MS Support on WHEA_UNCONTROLABLE_ERROR shows it is hardware related. Probably due to some driver issue.   https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4028662/windows-how-to-fix-whea...

If the system was custom built, be sure you have checked for the latest drivers for all your custom installed hardware.

You can view the BSOD dumps using Nirsoft's Bluescreen View from here.  http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html (link is external) Then you can post screenshots here for help in diagnosing them. Instructions to post screenshots can be found here

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Live Update Causes a BSOD on windows 10 Pro

Hello

The custom built computer sounds like the company that has built my computers over the years. If your computer is only 2 or 3 weeks old, have you checked with the tech support of the company that made your computer? Even if you don't have the extended warranty, it should still be covered by them for a certain amount of time.

What motherboard do you have? Is it a 299 chipset ? There have been a lot of problems with that chipset. Some issues have been fixed with a Bios update

Just some possible causes.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.
