Is This Version of NISS part of its 2009 program ?

 Win. xp/sp2/ NISS 2009

Well, today i gave up trying to work with my computer and figure out what to do with all the 16.7.2.10 problems -it was crashing constantly with all the problems everyone has listed.

I called Norton and had my program reinstalled but they gave me a version 16.0.0.125 and things have been wonderful ever since.  (well, all day, at least).

My big question is this 'version' (16.0.0.125) considered part of the ISS 2009 program? Since i had to use my NISS 2009 C.D. during the reinstall i'm assuming it 'is' part of the program?  LOL

Will i still get program changes via Live Update and get 'higher' versions?  and what happens if i get the 'dreaded. 16.7.2.10 again ?!!!!

(actually my friend had no problems with it !!! but she rec'd hers the day 'after' i got mine if that means anything)...anyway thanks to all who tried to help - i got lost in posts and made too many duplicate  're-entries' because i couldn't find my way back to where i originally posted... so this is a 'new' post for me.  Will not reply to any other current posts causing even more confusion !!   Really so sorry for all of that !  Best to you all & thanks in advance ..

PS:  any 'hints' on  how to navigate back to where one posted ?

To find the posts you have started or participated in ,when you first log in scroll down the First page You have a list of the different forums/boards until you see MY SUBSCRIPTIONS and those are all the posts you have posted in or started just click on them and you will find your way....

The version you have is the first release of NIS so yes you are a few versions behind....I suppose the most important issue is that the definitions are up to date....Some one else will have to inform you about whether it's worth while to get back to .135 or .134 until this issue is solved.

practice safe surfing and keep your surfing to a minimum until things are fixed should keep you out of trouble...Just my thoughts.

Re: Is This Version of NISS part of its 2009 program ?

I can't answer your query with any certainty but it could well be that you have been given an earlier version before the troublesome update. Tony W has posted a link now from which we can download an earlier version although the ID number is later than yours. It may be that that one is all Customer Support has available and are resonably certain is OK.

Hang on hopefully for someone from Symantec -- names in red --

I don't know of any easy way but if it is fairly recent and you know the subject try clicking on your name EDYTHE (depending on your browser I recommend Right Mouse Clicking and choosing Open in another TAB or Open in another Window since otherwise you lose your place whereas if you do this you can just close that TAB or WIndow and you are back where you were.

and that should take you to your personal details and a lists of recent posts by you, or See all posts if you have to go further back in time.

Or when you are originally reading the message you can click on Options and Bookmark this message and the look in your list of bookmarked messages when you are outside a thread.

Re: Is This Version of NISS part of its 2009 program ?

Hi EDYTHE,

As mo suggested, you have the first version of NIS2009 installed from your CD.  There have been three updates prior to the latest problematic 16.7 release.  If you are interested you can see the changes that each update included in this post.  You are fine with what you have.  The 16.7 update has been suspended so there is no chance of automatic LiveUpdate reintroducing this onto your system.  When the issues have been resolved and a new patch is released your 16.0 version will update and you will get all the cumulative changes from the earlier patches that are shown in the above referenced post.  So at this point just sit tight until everything is resolved.  You have hung in there admirably and I'm glad to hear that everything is now working as it should for you.

Edit:  It may be that automatic LiveUpdate is still updating earlier versions to 16.5 (given the current situation I don't know if any program updates are being installed).  If you should get a large download and be asked to reboot it could be the 16.5 cumulative update and so you can go ahead and restart to install that.

Hello !!  many thanks for your 'kudos' and fantastically  clear explanation and reassurance that i'm not on Mars with my current -reinstalled 'version' ......  so far, so good - into day 2 without a crash of NISS or any error messages from MSIE ..what a novelty !   LOL   sincerely - Edythe

Hi, EDYTHE,

Yes, Version 16.0.0.125 was part of the N.I.S. 2009, although, I think that may have been a Beta Product; not sure if it was Beta or not, but I know it is a Version of N.I.S. 2009.

If you go back to the very first Version of N.I.S. 2009, as soon as you Run Norton LiveUpdate or Automatic LiveUpdate, won't that bring you back to the Latest Version?

Re: Is This Version of NISS part of its 2009 program ?

We should remember that the version Edythe has was installed interactively by Customer Support to resolve the problem she was having with the later version she had been automatic updated to.

So until some of the current problems have been resolved she may be better advised to stick with that version and turn off Automatic Liveupdate ???

16.7.2.10 has been pulled from the Norton LiveUpdate Servers, so, the Latest Version "she'll" get is 16.5.0.134/5.  Also, please remember that there is a Hot Fix currently being Sent by Private Message/e-mail that seems to be Solving the symantec Framework Error.

This is risky, as "she" will become Vulnerable the Threats and Risks if you don't keep up-to-date with all of the Updates.  If "she" has the 125 Version, I suspect that all of the Updates will be from last year some time.

Helloo to you all and thanks for replying ... the last verion i had before the  16.2.7.10  update was 16.5.0.135 and didn't have a squeek of a problem with it .. when i installed as a new customer on or about 8/9 (give/take) i don't remember 'what' the version was at that time but i don't think it was 16.5.0.135  - but it wasn't the 'new/current' 16.0.0.125 that i now have but whatever - LOL it's working like a charm and i'm happy as a clam...so nice to have my computer 'back'

... the problems i had (and others)  including the 'framework error' have now disappeared...

Just remember that you might get Updated to the 16.5.0.134/5 Version via Automatic LiveUpdate or a Manual Norton LiveUpdate.

And you're welcome.  Glad I could help!

Re: Is This Version of NISS part of its 2009 program ?

I was aware of all that before I posted and also that Edythe has described herself as cautious in her browsing.

It's a question of lesser evils.

I'm also aware that Tony has posted a link to download the .135 version for those who want to install that.

Re: Is This Version of NISS part of its 2009 program ?

Whether you stick with the version that Customer Support installed for you to solve the problem you referred to you is entirely up to you.

But if you were entirely happy with .135 then Symantec have published to following source to get it from and since your version is earlier if you download / let it install it will remove the earlier edition as part of the process and preserve you settings and things like spam lists, which is important for me since it takes time to retrain the antisam module.

If you wish to download and install the previous version of Norton Internet Security (16.5.0.135), please visit the Norton Update Center:

http://www.norton.com/update

The instructions there are very clear and straightforward -- just select Norton Internet Security and 2009 as your version.

I ran this yesterday to check it out and it uses the current system of a Download Manager so from that website you download a short file and after it downloads to your desktop you click on it and it starts a further download and install of the .135 version.

The decision is entirely up to you.

Hello - i'm writring this after reviewing some past posts - i hope i don't have to bother you all again and i'm not sure 'where' there is going - i'm still getting lost:

Anyway,,,    If i understand some of the advices given states  it's o.k. for me to stay with this 16.0.0.125 until i'm updated to probably 16.5.++ via live update. (i'm a tad tentative to try and update to a later version on my own)

... if you all think i'm in an 'o.k' position by  staying  'put' with what the tech gave me (if i remember someone suggested that i rec'd 'that' version (16.00.125) since that was the only one available to the tech to get me out of my 'mess' ).

As i said - so far, so good - i'm into day 2 with no problems ... only thing that worries me  is it possible with this very early version i now have that i'm not getting the latest  'virus' definitions as if i had a later 'version' ? -Does the version 'dictate' the 'currency' of virus definitions =that no matter what version one has for NIS 2009 one would still be 'current/updated' for virus definitions regardless of the ''version'' ...or are those that  i am  getting (last one just 1 hr ago of this posting) are relevant only to this version (16.0.0.125) and not on 'real-time' date i.e. those offered as of today 8/22/09 ?  hope i didn't confuse you ...  i can't find where in the console to surf to find what number def's i received today ... went into network -found today's date under defs but not the identity that would then allow me to go to Norton's site to view the last number installed... again many thanks to all trying to help - Edythe

Hi, EDYTHE,

Just to clarify, the 16.7.2.10 has been pulled from the Norton LiveUpdate Servers.

If you were having no problems with the 135 Version, then I would suggest that you go back to that Version; I would think you would be able to get via Norton LiveUpdate, but, if not, you will have to go to the Norton Update Center and do it that way.

I hope this helps!

Re: Is This Version of NISS part of its 2009 program ?

Hi EDYTHE,

There are reports that the download link for NIS 2009 is actually downloading 16.7 and not 16.5.  My advice would be to stay with what you have presently.  The virus definitions are the same.  You are protected and you have a trouble-free installation that will update automatically when the 16.7 update is fixed and re-issued, so I would not risk downloading anything new until this all gets sorted out.

Hi, EDYTHE,

Did you try the Hot Fix when you had 16.7.2.10?  The Hot Fix is now widely available, and most people (98%) seem to be having no more Issues once they install the Hot Fix.  Just thought I'd bring that to your attention.

Hello Floating_Red...

No...i didn't know about the HF at the time i started all the fun with my computer and besides - i would be too apprehensive, given my 'level' of 'expertice' to even attempt anything on my own ... called Tech -explained my problem - told them i am 3 weeks 'new' to thier company/program - pleeeezzee  do something for me and they did -(the Remote uninstall/reinstall back to version 16.00.125.).. i'm happy - things are back to normal -(but what do i know?!! LOL)  i don't plan to download any ''newer' versions until Norton does their own via Live Update... Granted, i could be missing nice things with later versions (prior to the dreaded 16.7.1.10)  but sometimes in life " ignorence is bliss"

Thanks again for all your hand-holding and support - Edythe
