How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

I am not getting any answer from prior thread, so I am re-posting to seek advise from Norton Family developer team.

I have been regularly quarreling with my child to seize the phone in order to turn on the above-mentioned setting regularly as I suspected my child has turn it off every time she got it back.

Such conflicts could be avoided if the setting cannot be change by child. Please tell me what I can do to prevent my child from changing this app setting. My child is using Samsung Note 3.

Can you please provide the link to the other post? Id like to see the answer to this question. It would be helpful to others as I have wondered the same thing on this particular subject.

Re: How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

Thank you. I am not sure, after reading the comments on the link you provided, that is answering the question of how to prevent a child from going into their settings on their phone and disabling the app usage. The link you provided talks about a child putting their phone in safe mode. I am not sure what that is. All the child has to do is easily go into settings and disable app usage. The steps would be as Norton provided in the link.

Re: How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

chec. The point of the link is this. Norton Family itself is installed on a device under an account with full access to the device. If properly installed and setup the child should ONLY have restricted access to apps being used. Children have learned, there are ways to bypass Norton Family. They press the volume down and power buttons at the same time and the device reboots. When that happens a menu will appear, one of the selections is booting the device into "safe mode" which is used for troubleshooting/developer debugging. They will move the NF app to an SD card if one is present and reboot the device yet again back into normal mode. Norton Family is then not on the system. When they're done they just reverse the process to hide what they're doing.

On Android , the ability to "lock out" even being able to boot into safe mode is not possible. This is due to the way Android is created as an operating system. It would take a complete rewrite of the Android OS for that functionality to become present. Unfortunately the creators of Android want the safe mode present for the sake of developers. Hope that makes more sense.

Re: How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

Thank you very much for that clear explanation. Would that problem apply to any parentsl software installed on an android phone or is it just limited to Norton family? Wouldn't they still be able to stop the Norton process by going into their settings and disabling certain settings?

Re: How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

I know that by default on Android, no matter what the app being used is, safe mode cannot be prevented from being used.

Re: How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

Thanks SoulAsylum for the clarification and thanks to Chec for the good follow on questions.

The mentioned steps on by-passing Norton Family via safe mode suggest SD card is required, could I effectively block this by-pass option by simply removing the SD card?

I suspect my child has yet to attempt the safe mode, since her SD card is already full and would be rather inconvenient to transfer the app and other files to & fro. My current frustration is that she can simply turn off Norton Family via the settings without even going through the cumbersome steps of rebooting in safe mode.

SoulAsylum mentioned "The point of the link is this. Norton Family itself is installed on a device under an account with full access to the device. If properly installed and setup the child should ONLY have restricted access to apps being used."

Does it mean I could change my child's android account profile to have limited access to the device and should be done prior to "properly" install Norton Family? If so, may I trouble any kind soul to advise me on the detail steps to change the android account profile (currently I have control on the Android gmail login) to limited access and properly reinstall Norton Family?

Thank you.

Re: How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

Hi SoulAsylum, Thanks for your earlier advises. I am quite sure I have installed the app correctly. I have also tried the 2nd advise to define separate user with limited right, but I couldn't do it on my child's Samsung note 3 phone. After some research, it appear that even the newer Samsung phone still does not allow separate user definition.

To any Norton Family developer representative on this forum: Please advise if Norton Family can effectively work on Samsung note 3 (Stock ROM)  by limiting child's ability to turn off the app via setting. If yes, please advise how.

Re: How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

I have installed another free parental control software from Eset and found that it works by requesting for a pin when the child try to turn of the "app with usage access" setting . Can Norton Family developer quickly come up with an update to do the same?

Re: How to avoid child from turning off setting of "App with usage access"

Hi Mohan,

I don't understand why Norton would not want to prioritise development to plug this loop hole which any average kid could easily exploit to compromise the sole purpose of Norton Family. It is baffling to me that the free version of Eset is more effective than my paid version of Norton. Is Norton even serious about selling an effective product that is free of big loop hole?
