Coupons.com printer install

Hi!

I was searching for a coupon on Norton Search for Baked lays. As always, Coupons.com showed they had one. I clicked on it, and there was a prompt that says they don't have any and check back later. They do that all the time and it drives me nuts.

Anyways, I closed the window, and continued my search. Next thing I know, I get a prompt from Nortan saying the download was safe. I thought, "What download??". I went to check and Coupons.com automatically installed the coupon printer on my PC without my wanting it, or approving it.

So, I wanted to give you all a heads up, and thank Norton for alerting me to the download. Isn't that illegal for them to do that?

Thanks everyone. Stay safe.

No reply needed. Just some FYI.

Re: Coupons.com printer install

When you click on a coupon, it seems to get added to some print queue. When I clicked on Print Coupons it took me to a registration page. I did not follow through because it was asking or my mobile phone number. TMI.  I'm guessing that once you register, the site checks to see if you have the coupon printer app installed. If you do not, it initiates the download and install.

As for Norton blocking something like this. You initiated the request for the download, and the download was scanned and found to be safe.

The fine print details what you saw. Looking at the Terms and Conditions.

Re: Coupons.com printer install

Hi Peterweb,

Thankyou for your reply.

I never clicked on anything. I did on search on Norton search for baked lays coupons, (maybe it was lays potato chip coupons). A result came up that Coupons.com had a coupons, so I clicked on search result, and coupons.com came up and there was a yellow box at the top of all the coupons that said something to the effect of "We are sorry. That coupons is no longer available. keep checking back". So, I closed that window, and that is when the pop up came out of the right lower corner that "such and such download is safe". I tried to click details but was too slow. So, I went to my apps to uninstall. It wasn't there.  Checked downloads, it wasn't there. So, I went to history on Norton and it showed it had been downloaded, and was a trusted source. I went to file location, but could not uninstall. I accidentally deleted it. So, I did a full system scan on Norton, and did the performance tasks, and my computer is running slow, which it does when I have installed the coupon printer before. I always install when I see coupons I want, than uninstall bc it slows down my PC. So, I will go to Coupons.com, install the printer, and if the printer app is already installed, it should uninstall and reinstall.

I never clicked to install a printer app for coupons.com. I was on that page probably 1.5 seconds and closed window. That is all. I will see what happens and get back to you. It really freaked me out bc I now see how easy it is for malware to be installed if you click on the wrong page. Next time I will type Coupons.com in address bar. I will do exactly what I did now, and see what happens. Thanks!!

The difference is that malware would be caught by Norton. Norton recognizes that this coupon printer download is a safe download.

Re: Coupons.com printer install

This is a Google file. From  techdows.com

Google employee said this as a reply to a user reported in a forum thread when asked Chrome cleanup tool installed automatically without his consent:

“software_reporter_tool.exe is an executable that is signed by Google and downloaded as a component under Chrome’s application data folder. It is used to report whether unwanted software is present on the computer so that Chrome can prompt the user to run the Chrome Cleanup Tool (which used to be named Software Removal Tool, aka SRT).”

If you really want to disable/remove it you can do a search on removing it.

Re: Coupons.com printer install

Hi Peterweb,

Do most people keep it? Is it a useful tool, or just more software slowing down my PC. Thanks, and sorry it took so long to reply. Busy time of year for animal rescuers.

Re: Coupons.com printer install

I have seen it being updated many times. I have not done anything about it and I do not see any system issues.

It may be like Windows Malicious Software tool that gets updated and run every month. It is downloaded, it runs and that is it. I do not know if that is how this Chrome tool works.

I would just leave it alone.
