Norton Keeps warning for a software (FormatFactory) that has been excluded

Hi all

Norton keeps warning me for FormatFactory although I have asked to ignore the specified directory and had added and exception for the program.

Please see linked images:

  1. The warnings
  2. Added Exception to ignore the file
  3. Asked Antivirus to ignore the specific folder where the software is installed
  4. Asked Sonar to ignore the specific folder where the software is installed

Thank you

Re: Norton Keeps warning for a software (FormatFactory) that has been excluded

Um, maybe add PUA.FormatFactory signature > Signatures to Exclude from All Detections.

Note: watch out for bloat installs and watch out for browser ads.

bjm,

Thank you for your reply

I am using version 3.6.0, downloaded from the pcfreetime.com on Apr 2015. Ever since I have refused to update :-). I have no problems with the above you are mentioning.

Finally I excluded the PUA.FormatFactory  signature.

here is the FormatFactory 3.6.0 analysis:

I was wondering why it kept warning me about it since I was choosing from the dropdown list to ignore it.

FWIW ~ Please review:
1) Restore an item from Quarantine
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v6200368

2) My Norton product alerts that the file I downloaded is not safe, and deletes it
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v80629965

3) My Norton product incorrectly alerts that a file is infected, or a program or website is suspicious
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20100222230832

4) Add items to the Signature Exclusions

5) Turn off or turn on Download Intelligence

6) My Norton product detects a file or program as a threat even after I exclude it from scan

Restore & exclude this file: is not the same as adding item(s) to Exclude from Auto-Protect nor the same as Exclude from All Detections.

If you believe a file has been mistakenly detected, you may submit a dispute at https://submit.symantec.com/false_positive/.

Please tell us what Norton is telling you regarding this event.
For information regarding this event > from Norton pop-up > View Details > Copy to Clipboard &or from Norton history > More Options > Copy to Clipboard > paste here.

Exclusions / Low Risks options lets you exclude disks, folders, and files from risk and Auto-Protect scans. It provides a way for you to manage the items that have a low-security risk.  Excluding low-risk items from scans reduces your protection and should be used only if you have a specific need.

...your VirusTotal report (above) is for a program executable (perhaps the main program executable).
My earlier VirusTotal reports (here) were for the program installers downloaded yesterday from pcfreetime.

My pics (here) are related to:

I was unaware your opening post was related to FormatFactory 3.6.0 ("version 3.6.0, downloaded from the pcfreetime.com on Apr 2015. Ever since I have refused to update.") (installed on your machine?).

I have no prior knowledge of, nor experience with pcfreetime programs.

Thanks again for your help.

You are right. I just checked the installation program of my version. There are some threats, according to some programs:

https://www.virustotal.com/#/file/f1752750bd598d2ec0f0648a3dc772a72f1d3b...

AVAST, AVG, McAfee, F-Secure, Panda, Malwarebytes (at least, these are some of which I know) report that there is no problem. Well, who actually knows.

Re: Norton Keeps warning for a software (FormatFactory) that has been excluded

VirusTotal engines, as you know, may be tuned different from retail program.

VirusTotal should not be used for antivirus/URL scanner testing. VirusTotal was not designed as a tool to perform antivirus comparative analyses, but as a tool that checks suspicious samples with several antivirus solutions and helps antivirus labs by forwarding them the malware they fail to detect. Those using VirusTotal to perform antivirus comparative analyses should know that they are making many implicit errors in their methodology.

FWIW ~ Items rated as a PUA - which does not mean malware. A PUA can download and install other software that might turn out to be, indeed, malicious. However, PUA can be installed at the user's discretion. The signature detection is to bring the file to the user's attention.

What some users consider a PUA, other users will not; what one AV company rates as a PUA, another will not.

In general, be more vigilant and discerning. PUAs in particular usually install with your consent, and your consent can often be implied when you take shortcuts like a default installation, fail to read all the installation options presented, fail to read Terms & Privacy & EULA.
