NIS causes warning message in Windows Defender Security Center

Today I got an update to Norton Internet Security. This update probably caused Windows Defender Security Center to show the warning message Actions required. When I open the Security Center, there is nothing requiring attention, i.e. everything is marked with a green checkmark.

I have tried with a system reboot and to manually start system maintenance to no avail. The problem might of course not be Norton related, but the fact that it appeared in connection to a Norton update makes me believe that there is some connection.

Re: NIS causes warning message in Windows Defender Security Center

Hi,Bolp. Do you have Fast Start Up enabled ? if so, you may want to disable it, as it is known to cause issues with Norton, among others.

You could also try running Live Update manually until no more are found, and then restarting again.

You can also go to Help > Support in the UI and running Auto Fix to see if anything is amiss with Norton.

That may help.

As it is a Windows icon that is displaying incorrect information, it would seem to indicate some issue with MS. Not Norton. Did you check to see if you got any Windows updates around the time you started seeing the incorrect indication?

FWIW

I have an exclamation mark on my Defender Center icon. Checking it out, it is the App and Browser Control feature that is flagged because I choose to not enable that.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: NIS causes warning message in Windows Defender Security Center

Hello F 4 E and peterweb, and thank you for your input. Norton is now fully updated and the auto fix function corrected one error. After a reboot, the exclamation mark on the Windows Defender icon is still there, but when I open the security center everything looks fine.

I have not tried to disable fast startup, but I might try that too. As a test, I disabled the firewall and auto-protect in Norton, which resulted in a red cross warning on the Windows Defender icon. When I reactivated those features in Norton, the icon showed an exclamation mark again.

Since this is not affecting the functionality of neither Windows or Norton in any way, I will probably just ignore this error for the time being. It looks like it is just a Windows icon displaying an incorrect message.

On Thursday, I will be using my laptop computer again for the first time in several weeks. As it has the same version of Windows and Norton, it will be interesting to see if this error occurs there as well after all the updates.

peterweb: I received the last Windows update in June. The error appeared directly after an update to Norton yesterday.

Re: NIS causes warning message in Windows Defender Security Center

Hello Bolp

Have you tried using a different user account to see if the ! still shows up in the Action Center? If you are using a user account, try it with a Windows Administrator account and see if it still occurs. If you want to continue using a plain user account, try making a new one as a test.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: NIS causes warning message in Windows Defender Security Center

Hello all,

Yesterday I went through the same update process with my laptop computer. After the updates, the Windows Defender icon was showing the warning message with a red cross instead of the exclamation mark I see on my desktop computer. After a full update to both Windows and Norton, including running auto fix in Norton, after performing a full system maintenance through Norton and a reboot the red cross at last disappeared and changed into a green checkmark.

My desktop computer is still showing an exclamation mark on the Windows Defender icon. The Norton support says this is a problem with Windows having difficulties interpreting the information from Norton correctly, which in some cases can cause false security messages in Windows Defender. Norton is working to solve this problem in a future update.

flopot: I am already using an administrator account on both my computers.

Re: NIS causes warning message in Windows Defender Security Center

Update: At last, the Windows Defender icon on my desktop computer is showing a green checkmark again. The trick was to log into OneDrive and activate that service. I have never been using OneDrive before, but that fact has never caused any security messages in Windows Defender until this week.

Strange though that this error occurred just after an update to Norton, not to Windows.
