NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

I have a Centos 7 server running Bareos backup. I have a mixed network of Windows and Linux systems. If I backup a Windows 10 PC with NIS enabled the backup takes much more than 1 hour to backup 4-5GB data. If I disable Smart Firewall AND Auto-Protect it takes 4-5 minutes for the same backup. This is true on Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Pro Insider and Windows 10 Home.

The Bareos File-Daemon uses ports 9102 and 9103 which are both enabled in the NIS setup.

Any help would be very useful. If no help is forthcoming then I will abandon NIS (again) when my current subscription expires.

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

Any AV running is going to scan any file as it is accessed. When you are doing a backup, the file is scanned as it is accessed by the backup program.

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

Until fairly recently I had a Windows Server 2012 R2 which performed all the same functions as my current Centos server. The backup on the Windows server completed in about 10 minutes. The backup today on my Windows 10 Home client took 1hr 31mins 38 secs to complete for 7.52GB of data. The hardware is the same hardware used on the Server 2012. I understand that the AV will scan files, however the files have already been scanned and are being read not written. Come what may, the absolutely appallingly slow rate of backup is awful. Thank you for your advice, but I cannot believe that is the reason for the poor performance. I think that NIS is doing something else and if I cannot find that "something else" then NIS will become history (again).

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

If the only change is the server, maybe you need to look into settings on the new server. Norton does not care where data is sent/stored.

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to get more info from the Bareos community, unfortunately they do not seem to be very active at the moment. The Bareos daemon that is installed on the clients is a very small app. I will monitor CPU activity during the next backup. I have been using Norton/Symantec products since 1993 (AV and Backup in those days) and it has over the years been a real resource hog, although in more recent times there has been a huge improvement. The reason for the new server is the copy of Server 2012 I bought turned out to be not completely legal and could not be re-installed when it had problems. The new server is using exactly the same motherboard, cpu, memory, disk drives, Ethernet interface etc.

I have a feeling that NIS doe not play very nicely with the Bareos daemon, but I have no idea yet what to do about it. If I disable NIS Windows Defender takes over and everything works fine.

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

I just looked up the Bareos project and see it is a Linux box. I do not have any experience with those. But it could be causing some of the performance issues you are seeing since switching from a Windows based server.

Hopefully others in the forum can give you some input on that.

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

Thanks for your input. Bareos is a backup solution that runs on Linux and Windows systems. The problem I have is not with the server, but with the Windows clients.

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

How can you be sure it is your Windows clients causing the problem? The clients are the same. It is your server OS that is now different. You have gone from a Windows based server to a Linux based OS for your server, CentOS.  Have you had experience with Linux before? There may be things that need to be set correctly in that OS to network properly with Windows clients.

When you had Server 2012, how were you creating your client backups?

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

I have been using Linux for over 20 years (Red Hat, Fedora, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Centos) and Windows for longer (3.0, 3.1, 3.11, Win95, Win98, NT3.5.1, NT4.0, Win2000Pro, Millenium, XP, Win7, Win10, Windows Home Server V1, Server 2012 and all the TechNet and Insider versions). In order for Linux to share files, printers etc with Windows systems you have to use Samba, but for Bareos to work it uses it's own daemon - bareos-fd. Using Server 2012 is very similar. You install a "connector" on each client which is the equivalent to the Bareos daemon. This then handles the backup with Server 2012.

The issue is that the bareos daemon and NIS do not work together well. I am trying though this forum and the Bareos forums to find out if there is anything I can do to change this. If I cannot find anything I will change my internet security package for one that plays nice with Bareos.

Re: NIS slows Bareos backup to a crawl

If the Bareos community cannot help, maybe try the CentOS community. Those are the two changes you made, so it would seem to be something to do with one of those variables.

Unless someone here has any other ideas.
