Hi mo,

When you went to 2010 did you over-install (upgrade) your previous version or did you clean the previous version out and do a clean install?

Hi mo

Have had a few people with the same issue having done an in-place upgrade and the solution is to take your current NIS out with the Norton Removal Tool and reinstall 2010. There seems to be something that in some upgrades doesn't quite go right.

Re: Sonar crashed 2010?? switched off and the red icon in the tray

My thoughts

Scan came up clean...yay

Looked in logs and at 3.59pm sonar advanced protection failed to load in the limited user account,Then at 4.06pm sonar failed to load in the Admin account.

There is a sample submission of np_gp.dll being processed in history at 4.32pm.

Now a thought struck me....this laptop has under a gig of ram,my kids are impatient to wait till everything loads and jump onto the net to an intensive game site......therefore stressing out the laptop so something had to give or in this case was not loaded in order.

I have restarted the laptop to test this theory and there is the green check mark!!

A few minutes later the red icon appeared again after a pop that says "you have to be a administrator to perform that task " what task I have know idea???

That one is a puzzle!!

The symptoms you are displaying are clasically what a remove and reinstall cured for a few others. It was  an issue in NIS2009 before the update to 16.7.2.11 and I think, somehow it hangs over in some upgraded installations.

Re: Sonar crashed 2010?? switched off and the red icon in the tray

Thanks

I never had an issue in 2009....argh I am dragging my feet on doing the uninstall reinstall route.Liveupdate is still working.wondering what would cause the crash? any where other than NIS history to see what may have triggered it??

One click ....says all is well

fix now......... will not fix it

Quick scan is slow......All Ok

No, I hadn't had issue with 2009 either but when it happened to me (very regularly) after upgrading to 2010 I went right through all sorts of areas including all of the Windows event viewer logs but couldn't pin it on anything. I eventually bit the bullet, ripped it all out with NRT and installed clean and have not had a problem since.Message Edited by mdturner on 09-24-2009 09:12 AM

How long would you say before the first problem appeared after the install (first)

I put NIS2010 on the 16/9/09

Now you are testing my memory - 3 to 4 days from what I can remember.

Re: Sonar crashed 2010?? switched off and the red icon in the tray

All done, ran the NRT twice and then used CCleaner for the leftovers. The New install of 2010 picked up the key without me having to type it in.I lost my log ins but hey if it works worth the loss I only had a few....

Thanks MD see how it goes then I will mark the solution post.

Cheers

Glad you got it done. You took the thorough approach so all should be well.

Give it a few days and then let us know whether it is still OK.

Glad to hear it went well, mo :-D We've had many interesting conversations on the topic of uninstallation methods, kitty I had feathers back then instead of tentacles

For detailed instructions - if you ever have to perform an uninstall and reinstall of NIS 2010 in the future for whatever reason (or if you simply want a clean install for NIS 2011...), you can follow the ones below ;-D

Note: the removal tool will wipe out your settings and any other Norton products installed on your computer. It will not touch your product key, however, and your newly installed Norton product should pick up your key automatically.

-download the removal tool from here and save it to your desktop:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=1a13409b-29db-4397-a286-9dec49f8e252&seg=hho&ct=us&lg=en&docurl=20080828154508EN

-download the full NIS 2010 installation package from here and save it to your desktop:

http://www.norton.com/nis10

-make sure you have got your product key handy (you can get it from your Norton account) just to be on the safe side.

-deactivate any other security software you may have, such as Windows Defender. However, please leave Norton running. As a side note: running two real-time security programs on one machine is not recommended.

-if you wish, you can create a system restore point

-disconnect physically from the internet (remove the internet cable) that way your computer is not exposed.

-if you're in Vista: right-click on the removal tool icon, run as administrator; run the removal tool 2-3 times, rebooting each time after every run

-after running the removal tool: if in Vista: right-click NIS 2010 icon, run as administrator, let it install itself. When it wants to connect with the web, connect again to the internet.

Re: Sonar crashed 2010?? switched off and the red icon in the tray

If you know you want to re-install, I think this is an easier path, as I reported in http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&message.id=76646&query.id=2084811#M76646:

I had a similar problem yesterday.  Not only did the tray icon not respond, but neither did the desktop shortcut or direct access to uiStub.exe.  This was true on both of our A31p Thinkpads running XP Pro SP3.

All this happened after I did a registry clean with jv16.  I usuually use ccleaner, but I was having some problems with Acronis ABR 10, so I decided to use jv16 which I hadn't used for a couple of years -- for reasons I now remember :).  After checking on the web forums, I saw that the default jv16 after a fresh install can wipe out some parts of anti-virus software like Norton, for reasons not clear.  The jv16 tech support advice was to put Norton in as an "excluded word".  I have decided to exclude jv16.

In any case, I figured a re-install of Norton should be performed on both machines.  Rarely have I seen such an easy uninstall  and re-install.  I figured that the Install Files directory left by the first 2010 installation might help.  I clciked on NIS10UPEN.exe and was offered the uninstall options, including an option to save my settings and database.  After a reboot I clicked again on  NIS10UPEN.exe and did the install.  All my Settings were not really saved, and I had to fine tune those again.  However, all my license info, etc., was intact and I just needed to do a LiveUpdate.

This easy fix offered by Norton solved my tray and desktop icon problems.
