Core went overboard

Hello

As soon as my Chrome updated tonight, Core started marking malicious sites left and right from all of our devices. It even blocked Samsung from our older TV which isn't a smart TV. It blocked well known sites including parts of Chrome, Gmail, Skype, Samsung, Google, People,a store I get emails from. This all happened within an hours time. Each site got hit numerous times. Did BlueCoat get a Booster shot or something? We didn't actually see any blockages, I noticed them when I opened up Core and saw how much my sites blocked had jumped up.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Core went overboard

FWIW, doing a bit of review, I also found these "false" notifications which did NOT actually block the sites named in the screenshots provided. I find it odd on its face these false detections are being seen on Core in the first place. Wondering whether they are also related to the categorization issues being seen as well? The first SS is Core firmware update on March 19th, please note, the detections I see are after that date.

Edit: Maybe the definitions updates for Core have set a bar too high for things?

Re: Core went overboard

Hello Soul

I had the malicious site for Norton Forum, but it was just when I used the shortcut that formed for the Safe Web on the Google Search page that I have from Chrome. I actually got the red blockage before I got into the Forum. Once I got in by using a different method, I was fine. Chrome had an error and there was no way to edit the shortcut. Once that error was fixed by Chrome, I could edit the shortcut and put in the correct url for the link. No more blockages with the red blockage.

I had the malicious site listing like you have, but it all happened on the night of the 25th. Starting on the 19th, I don't know if this is related. There are a few different threads about this issue in 2 of the other Boards. The others don't have the Core, but it did start on the 19th and is still ongoing. I tried to get the attention of Norton Admins, but as of last night I didn't succeed. Haven't gotten to those Boards yet tonight. These errors make it seem like nothing is working with Norton. I can't use @mention so I am helpless even though I know help is needed from Norton.

Skype takes so long to open up now. At first it's just a blue rectangle. Several minutes later it opens up like it should. That was one of the sites. It affected 5 different devices including a Samsung TV. Samsung was one of the sites blocked. Between all the different sites and blockages, it amounted to at least 15 blockages added on to  These blockages are still going on including for Skype. It's not acceptable for it to take several weeks for this to be fixed..

Sorry, I got a little carried away I guess.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Core went overboard

Hello

Skype had an update tonight, so hoping that problem is solved as far as the delay in starting. I have noticed that these issues seem to happen when I restart my computer lately in the evening. Tonight I only had 2 sites and they were both my computer. I signed up to get the online version of People magazine every late afternoon. They come out every day around 4 PM. Sometimes they block some of the articles and I can't get to the article. Tonight I saw they blocked Razer.com. I have a Razer keyboard and I get their emails usually. I didn't get my email tonight and their was something about Razer in the Alert. Nothing listed in Norton Security with Backup about either site. These both occur while I am reading my emails before I restart.

Re: Core went overboard

Hello

5 Alerts from my Computer all at the same time  while I was reading email and then restarted my Computer. It complained about a camera in my Weather Bug program. There are cameras in use for the traffic reports. These cameras are not looking at me. My Skype program is still taking a while before it comes alive..

Why is Norton Security and other 2nd opinion scans not finding any of these alerts that Core keeps finding?

Re: Core went overboard

Hello

I haven't seen any new alerts for the past 2 days, so I am hoping that this problem has some how been fixed. I wish all of those extra wrong blockages could be subtracted from my total Threats Blocked when they shouldn't be blocked.

Re: Core went overboard

Hello

I thought the Alerts had stopped. I didn't have any for 3 days. Tonight I had 2 Alerts from my computer. I read People magazine online everyday. I got 1 Alert but it was blocked 9 times, not all from today, but the 9 got added to my Threats Blocked. It will keep adding the total to the Threats Blocked. Tomorrow when I read my email from People, it will add the total again, not just the 1 blockage but the total.

The other Alert was for WeatherBug on my computer. That got 7 Alerts all at the exact same time plus the other  2 days it decided to block that program which is loaded on my computer all the time. How did it block the same program 7 times at the same time? So I got 9 added to the Threats Blocked. So for the 2 Alerts, I got 18 threats added to the Threats Blocked. They are adding in the incorrect numbers every time to the total. Threats Blocked is an inflated number which gives the wrong number of blockages. Core needs to count these threats different and add the daily total and not the grand total for the same threat..

None of my emails ever get blocked and that is how I get the People Online

Thanks.

Re: Core went overboard

I haven't gotten an alert in 5 days.  I even went to people.com and no alerts.  I wonder if it has something to do with your email?  Also, are you using the Norton subscription that come with the Core or are using Norton Security with Backup.  I think you mentioned that you were using NS with Backup?

Re: Core went overboard

All: not long ago I had a notification from the Core app the my current DNS setting (ISP) was not DNESS. I set Core to Norton Secure DNS. I believe not long after these false detections and browser white page freezes began. I had also gotten hundreds of simultaneous detection notices on one machine within a minutes time. Today, I set Core back to ISP DNS and restarted Core. All has been well all day. Life is good.

Re: Core went overboard

Hello Manny

I didn't know  there was  a separate Norton program for Core? If there is one, I would guess it would be for those customers who had been using other security programs besides Norton. I have Norton Security W Backup. When I got my Core, they just gave me a key to use I think. There was no mention of a different program to use. Some of the Alerts come from my emails that I read. I even had a couple for my Samsung TV. It only uses the Net to get the TV guide.Landline phones and TV service must come thru the Verizon FIOS modem/router. That cannot go into bridge mode or turned off or else no TV's The FIOS boxes are part of the TV service and must use FIOS.. I had 1 or 2 days with no Alerts and only 1 today. I use Office Outlook for my emails. What gets me is that none of these Alerts show up in Norton Security. The websites are clean according to Safe Web, but not according to Blue Coat. Blue Coat doesn't do anything about scanning. All they do is put everything into categories.

When I look at MYNorton, it shows that I have Norton Core Security Plus with my key.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Core went overboard

I also had Norton Security with Backup but when the Core came out they changed the subscription name to Norton Core Security Plus.  They actually merged the Norton Security with backup subscription with my new Core subscription for additional time.  They apparently did the same to you since in your MyNorton it says Norton Core Security Plus, even though its the same software.

好评0

Re: Core went overboard

All: The subscription itself is what keeps Core activated although, Norton Core Security Plus is an added plus it doesn't have any relation to how Core does or doesn't detect things. Since having Core I have had devices on 3 separate subscriptions. The Core app will tell you it cannot detect if a connected device has Norton installed nor whether it doesn't. You can tap I have Norton installed and the app will use that and update your score. What version of Norton you are actually using has no bearing on how Core detects issues. Your browser and the version of A/V actually installed on devices will make a difference. Hope that makes sense.

Re: Core went overboard

Hello

The one difference between Norton Security W Backup and Norton Core Security Plus. is that the Core allows for more devices than the 10 allowed with NSBU plus also it covers different devices to be connected to your network.

Re: Core went overboard

Indeed. Please see my post here, I rebooted Core yesterday and the frivolous notifications seem to have abated. Whether a fresh definitions update slipped through is unknown since we won't see a notification that took place.

Re: Core went overboard

Hello

2 nights ago, before I got the new firmware, my Core showed 17 blockages for the same site in one device over a 1 minute of time. I never heard of the malicious site nor did I get any warning on the device or any sign of being blocked. It almost sounds like a test for me to get 17 blocks in 1 minute time. Shouldn't there be some kind of visible sign I was being blocked so I could get off the site rather than seeing it my Alerts after the fact? No mention in the History Logs in that device that Norton saw anything malicious so I would know to get off or close the site. I was not aware of being on the site that was being blocked before I noticed the Alarm in Core. Wouldn't 1 or 2 notices of a blockage serve the same thing other than adding 17 points to my blocked sites total

Re: Core went overboard

Hi Floplot,

Those alerts most likely were not legit,  and due to bug in v 278 FW.  Please let us know how the v 282 is performing for you.

Re: Core went overboard

Hello

On Sunday afternoon, I looked at Core with the new 282 Firmware and I saw a blockage with a weird name. I sent in a Log on Sunday with my phone because of the weird name and the excessive number of blockages in 2 minutes time. This happened as soon as I sat down at my computer.. I realize that Core did this assumed blockages, but what was I doing to get these blockages? It wasn't even a website, but 2 words or a known program or website form. It was some odd word and .rocks. No IP was  given.

Re: Core went overboard

Floplot, if you are seeing a blockage on your Core app where there is a number in parentheses, such as below, it simply means that as in my case this IP or as in your case a simple website or IP has been blocked the number of times in the ( xx ) area since the initial up time / last factory reset of Core. Not necessarily all at one instance although that does happen. That number will exponentially increase as new detections are found from the same intrusion IP or URL. Your Norton security product logs most likely will not show these there because, Core had as they attempted initial network access and were subsequently blocked. Norton never sees them for that reason. I hope that explains things a bit.

Re: Core went overboard

Hello Soul

In this case, there was no IP given, just 2 words given which isn't a website. It was the first time these 2 words were posted  in the Alerts. I don't want to post the 2 words for obvious reasons. Those 2 words are not found in Google.  No child protection rules ever used. That site is the only one listed if it's a site. That 82 was added to my  threats blocked total. There is a very long list of times it was blocked.
