Why am I getting this email? Norton LifeLock Marketing Communications Notification

First, I have NIS and have it for 548 more days.  I don't have a LifeLock account and don't want one.  I got the Below email today from Norton.  I have never had a 'Norton LifeLock online purchase.  I smell something fishy here.  Any suggestions on whether I should do anything about this?

Due to a temporary issue during your Norton LifeLock online store purchase, you may have been excluded from receiving our marketing communications and are not receiving the latest Norton LifeLock news, including special discounts, important new product notifications, and more.

We’ve since fixed the issue and you are now opted in to receiving these communications. You may also choose to opt out at any time.

Thank you for being a Norton LifeLock member.

At first I thought it was spam and trashed it. Has anyone else received this?

Thx for any responses.

Yes I have also received this identical message and question its authenticity.

I received the email. I logged into my account (not from the email link) and couldn't find a place to OPT out!   I agree, it seems to be "Phishy".

Forgot to mention: possibly relevant: the message was sent from <Norton@secure.norton.com>

Re: Why am I getting this email? Norton LifeLock Marketing Communications Notification

Per the page referenced at 'Is this email from Norton legitimate', yes the questionable message was sent from a valid address (Norton@secure.norton.com) and the links within the message start with https://secure.norton.com; however, like the originator of this thread, I also have NIS and do NOT have a LifeLock account - hence no store purchase of same as mentioned in the suspect E-mail.

Hi phantom:

Log in to your Norton Account at https://my.norton.com/ and then edit your Email Preferences in the Personal Information tab of your account settings.  There's also an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of these annoying emails but in my experience clicking that "unsubscribe" link never stops this junk from arriving in my Inbox.

Opting out of these emails from your account settings won't stop all this spam (apparently Norton classifies most of their marketing emails as "important security alerts") but it should help.

See DaveW123's thread Why is Norton unresponsive and a spam generator? for more hints on disabling pop-up ads from the Norton icon in your system tray, etc.

But you have a Norton Account that is tied to your email address. Norton now owns Lifelock, and is bundling this service with some new Norton 360 products. That is why you are getting these marketing emails. Use the information in  lmacri's post above to change your email preferences in your Norton Account.

I HAD set my Norton account E-mail preferences years ago, to not receive marketing messages, and I was aware that Norton now owns LifeLock.

The issue remains: the suspect message contains: "...during your Norton LifeLock online store purchase" - which never happened.

    Hi phantom:

Have you made any recent purchases from Norton or renewed your annual subscription lately?

Norton has been re-branding themselves for the past few months since acquiring the LifeLock credit monitoring service - see Norton employee Sunil_GA's 13-Nov-2018 comment in Pitbull2020's thread Life Lock In Version 22.16.2.22 as well as the new logo shown below.  Marketing always refers to the company as "Norton LifeLock" now and this has caused quite a bit of confusion among Norton users (especially those living outside of the US that can't purchase this LiveLock service).  I'm guessing this re-branding is why the email you received refers to "Norton LifeLock".

And just an aside, but when I logged in to my Norton Account today to capture the image <here> of my email preferences I was surprised to see that setting to "Email me product updates, offers, and security updates" had been re-enabled without my knowledge.

My email was Unchecked and I still get annoying unsolicited pop up notifications.

Norton has lowered itself to being a troll.

Yea, my box was unchecked also.  I'm just going to consider it spam.

    Hi Terster:

Changing your e-mail preferences in your Norton Account as instructed <above> will only decrease the e-mails mailed out by the Marketing Department.

If you want to decrease the pop-up ads that are displayed on your desktop, go to Settings | Administrative Settings in the main Norton interface and ensure the Special Offer Notification setting is turned OFF.

    Hi Terster:

...and further to my previous post, if you're referring to the pop-up messages you see in your system tray while your system is idle that say something like "Norton is performing a background task..." then those pop-ups can be disabled at Settings | Administrative Settings | Norton Task Notification.

If that doesn't help please post a screenshot of the pop-up (see Andmike's instructions <here>) or let us know the exact wording of the message. I've encountered a few annoying ones that seem to keep coming back even after I click the "No Thanks" link in the pop-up (e.g., badgering me to install Norton browser extensions I don't want), especially after a product update.
