LUE files 34Gb

Norton Anti Virus on PC Windows 7

Examining the file tree under \Norton  I find eventually \Lue\Logs\  Log.lue 9Gb and TempTrimLog.lue 8Gb and Log.Lue.Bak 2.8Mb AND \Lue\Logs\ Hlinks\  Log.Lue.Data 9Gb and TempTrimLog.Lue.Data 8Gb and Log.Lue.Bak.Data 2.8Mb

The whole tree under \Lue is 34Gb. No wonder I am running out of disk space.

I know this has been touched on in the past, but I want to be quite sure I know what I am doing - can I delete in file manager everything from \Lue downwards? Are the files locked somehow?

Thanks

Re: LUE files 34Gb

Thanks

Yes - I saw that thread, but it didn't mention the .Bak file and the three \Hlinks data files. Do I take it all *six* files can be deleted ie \Lue and everything below it?

Re: LUE files 34Gb

were my machine.... I'd do Norton re-fresh install if files bothered me.  Just me.

Re: LUE files 34Gb

I'd rather not do drastic things if I can simply delete six files.

Just me. I'd rather not pick at it.  Norton re-fresh install is not drastic IMO.

Lets hear from Community.

Re: LUE files 34Gb

Hello WD. The question on my part is what Norton product and version do you have installed? The current Norton products don't have LUE files within the install as I have checked on Windows 10. Please post a screenshot of the directory tree you are seeing in Windows 7 for us to review. Here is how to post a screenshot.

Edited: FYI!! You will have to boot windows into safe mode and/or disable tamper protection.

Cheers

Thus:

What about all those NCO zip files as well?

Norton Security 22.17.3.50 EAP
My Program Data > Norton folder is ~1GB from May 31, 2019 install.

I'd do Norton re-fresh install if files size bothered me.  Just me.

Re: LUE files 34Gb

Well I stand corrected that the current products are missing LUE folder/file. They are there buried in a directory for an older version. I deleted what is there on my system and rebooted. It had no effect on the status on my current product install. My Norton data directory is only 1.35 GB much as bjm has.

Re: LUE files 34Gb

Having posted my file tree as requested I would appreciate some comments. I am using pure and simple Norton Anti-virus auto updated, and it reports it is up to date.

Re: LUE files 34Gb

WD, open your Norton UI, go to the top right and click on "Help". In the new screen, look under "General Information" and click "About". Tell us what your version is.

Re: LUE files 34Gb

Thanks, it is 22.17.2.47 Current SKU 12775507 Media SKU 21376863.

The odd thing is that there is no mention of the words 'Norton Antivirus'

Re: LUE files 34Gb

WD, give this workaround a go:

  • Delete the log files (current user should have 3 files) from the folder (Lue\Logs folder) (example C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NGC_22.xx.x.xx\Lue\Logs)
  • Run Live-update manually to make sure only Log.lue is present
  • Reboot

Please let us know your results.

Re: LUE files 34Gb

OK - I bit the bullet and deleted all six files, and ran Live Update as suggested. Apparently no ill effect and I have gained 34Gb of disc space.

So the question is - why was this happening? And if it was happening to me why isn't it happening to everyone else? How do I stop it happening in the future? Clearly these log files had been continuously accumulating for the past 11 years. Why is there no warning about this?

Thanks for everyone for helping me solve this.

But now I am alerted to this sort of problem I turn my attention to the 782Mb of   \NCO\WCD*.tmp.zip files visible at the bottom of my screenshot. tmp seems to imply temporary - these also seem to be accumulating - do I need them? Can I delete them too?

Re: LUE files 34Gb

Thanks for the feedback WD. Others MAY indeed be seeing the file buildup and are simply taking care of it on their own. That being said. You can safely remove those files as well. Over time, these LUE files accumulate as newer product versions are introduced. I believe, that some older files are still needed for the newer versions to install and work efficiently. And of course, as we have found these files are not automatically cleaned up as they are no longer required. Since the last few product upgrades I had on at least one occasion, performed full removal with the NR&R tool, did a clean reboot and reinstalled my product. Then ran live update to get the extras needed. Thus I don't see the file fiasco others do at times. If the issue reoccurs I would consider doing a removal and reinstallation of your product so it will remove all the older mess no longer needed.

Cheers
