Windows 10 / 1903 update KB4512508

All: I'm putting out a feeler for KB4512508, users on Windows 10 version 1903 who installed this cumulative feature update yesterday via Windows Updates. I HAD this installed on my new Dell Laptop which is a fairly good computer, it installed without issue. I put the computer to bed (powered off) last night. At startup this morning, I saw a screen which was the same as an update completing itself, went to 35%, completed at that percentage and was presented the Windows login. After login, my system temp on ALL CORES went to around 160 F consistently and as high as 188 F. Further restarts provided no difference in the temps. The computer was/is clean of anything that would obstruct the cooling path. Having removed the update in question, rebooted, the system returned to normal temps. What I had found was this update somehow prevented by system fan from starting. Have any of you installed this update and seen anything funny taking place during or after the install and cold startup? I will not allow this update on the remaining machines until I can figure out what caused this. I might add, this laptop is only 3 months old, Quad-Core CPU with 12GB system memory.

Cheers

SoulAsylum,

I'm still on version 1809 on both my W 10 x64 systems, haven't installed August 2019 updates yet, but I'll let you know if I see anything odd.

P.S. Did you install lately any of MS, Spectrum related, microcode updates?? or BIOS firmware patch??... that could be a problem.

Cheers,

Soul explains,

"What I had found was this update somehow prevented my system fan from starting."

What i am annoyingly finding with my Win 10 system (from time to time and perhaps due to Win update) a fan in the tower that will seemingly continue to run...  Maybe it eventually cuts out and maybe i should run system diags, however, really don't want to be bothered to look into further...

Re: Windows 10 / 1903 update KB4512508

No BIOS updates or micro code updates other than what MS would provide in the monthly releases. Yes Krusty, I've had a few hiccups of late, which are mostly on the part of Norton. Nothing serious as live updates to my Norton product have resolved the issues in other threads. I still await the data analysis from the logs I sent to Sunil for the issue with my other Dell laptop which is Intel based. All my other systems are AMD based, the two laptops (AMD and Intel) are the ones giving me fits.

The issue within this thread "appears to be" on its face to have been a MS issue from the update in question. Temps jetting to 180 degrees is no joke and destructive. Laptops as you are aware only have one CPU fan. On this new Dell, it apparently stopped functioning AFTER the update was installed, and at boot time this morning. Removing the update cleared the issue in its entirety. I'm just feeling out the community to see if others may be seeing similar issues. Thanks to everyone for your feedback, as always, it truly is appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Windows 10 / 1903 update KB4512508

I have 2 AMD PC's and one AMD Laptop and no problems with Windows update.

You could check over at www.tenforums.com and see if they have a clue.

Re: Windows 10 / 1903 update KB4512508

Thanks Jim. I installed on a 6 core AMD gaming rig of mine earlier today. No issues thus far with Norton or the update. I'll do the other AMD gaming rig tomorrow as well as my other Dell laptop and see how things go. The laptop that had the issue has AMD CPU as well and with R5 graphics. I'm looking into whether the R5 might be a source of the issue.

Re: Windows 10 / 1903 update KB4512508

Problem solved: A week or so before the last Tuesday update cycle the laptop in question updated to the Adrenalin 2019 AMD driver suite. During the KB4512508 install, the Windows installer didn't want to play at all with the latest set of driver, reverted the system to the "standard windows 10 display" which DOES NOT support Direct X 12 in any fashion. Being that the CPU is actually an APU, the installation drove Windows silly when the latest AMD R5 drivers loaded at the next cold boot the following morning.

I resolved by, 1-removed the update and rebooted. Then had WU install the update again. No issues noted during nor after the install this morning. 2- Reinstalled the latest Adrenalin 2019 driver package on the system, rebooted. System temp returned to normal and have remained normal.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. HOPING some of this helps others if/when they have a similar issue. ALL my other AMD and Intel systems have this update installed without issues.

Cheers
