Bought a new program on CD installs ok...BUT

When I download the update (norton said it was fine) it is still ok but when it comes to running the new update NIS2010 pops up saying it is behaving strangely and I should block it? How do I know what is the right thing to do?I have never come across this before.

Mbam did pick up something called adaware webhancer after I installed the CD I told it to remove the problem and I figured if it was part of the program I could easily re install.

Mo:

It also depends on what kind of program it is.  Sometimes cleaners or diagnostics will trigger Norton because of their activity.  A little more info would help make a determination.

Re: Bought a new program on CD installs ok...BUT

LOL I am rather embarrassed (no idea why) to say it is a program called the Online Bible that I purchased last week,I am currently looking on their website for any references to the notification from Norton. The problem exe is called olb.exe...so next I will be Googling that.It was NIS's sonar that picked it up when I opened it to run it.

What else do you need?

Thanks for any help!!

Re: Bought a new program on CD installs ok...BUT

Sometimes Norton will object to program components that may send user statistics or data back to home base.  I had such a piece of software removed from an installation of a program.  Most of the time this doesn't harm anything.  You can locate the file in question, manually quarantine it, submit it to Symantec, and see if quarantine of the file makes any difference to the product use.

If not, you can remove it from your system.  I don't think programs should be installing this kind of software without proper notification.

Not sure it's that..... but hey I know nothing.I know there is a lot of languages involved being installed.Anyway to narrow down the component?

This is something I found about the olb file not sure how to read it though......

Re: Bought a new program on CD installs ok...BUT

Hi Mo:

Did Sonar quarantine the file?  Does the program still run properly?  There is no information that the file is associated with malicious content.  One problem is that it is unsigned.  Another is that it "executes processes stored in temp files," which is something that will trigger Sonar. (Prevx)

It shouldn't cause you any problems as long as Norton will let it stay on the system.  It sounds like it is necessary to the program.

No need to be embarassed ...

You don't give the website -- I googled on [ online bible ] and it brings up a lot of references but one is

http://www.onlinebible.net/

If that is it have you checked out the FAQs since you don't mention your version of Windows including Service Packs and I see that mentioned for VISTA

http://www.onlinebible.net/faqs.html#faq2c

One of them on access denied contains this rather strange statement in the contect of setting compatibility mode!

<<  Select the operating system that the program was originally intended to run on. (Win 98)  ..

Re: Bought a new program on CD installs ok...BUT

@Hugh ,thanks yes that is the site.I  actually bought the CD first from another site and had installed it..... it is the update that is causing the issue...I have downloaded the installer and when I run the installer NIS sonar pops up asking whether I want to run it or not. I chose to block and quarantine it this time as I didn't know enough to make an educated decision either way on it's safety. So I am asking just because NIS picks it up it may not be malicious? My system is in my sig...

@Delph

I will run it and see what happens as I too could not find why it would be malicious.....Can I send it to Norton to get it checked? Although I think community watch is doing that at the moment.

Re: Bought a new program on CD installs ok...BUT

Hi Mo:

Since it is sitting handily in quarantine at the moment, there is an option under more details, I think, where you can submit it to Symantec for a check.

Thanks Hugh.

Delph I can not find any option to send to Symantec? There is an option to save the details to clipboard then copy and paste to Notepad or where ever I want to save it to.

I will have a look in some other areas.

At least the program functions without the update

Re: Bought a new program on CD installs ok...BUT

Just an update...I allowed the  update install to run ignored the flag from Nis and all is working.Glad I updated as the program is much easier to use.......scanned with Mbam no problems picked up so far and will scan with NIS2010.

I chose to run it after some advice from a friend and after doing some research on the net about this file it appears harmless. Will update if anything happens.

Note this file is associated with the onlinebible unsure of any other olb.exe's that may be out there.

cheers!
