Vulnerability Protection 3.0 has been posted

A major update to the Vulnerability Protection feature in Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security has been posted to LiveUpdate. This update is free to all customers with a valid subscription.

This update includes the several changes, including:

  • Uses the latest Vulnerability Protection Engine from Symantec, which will result in faster network performance, and better detection of signatures, especially HTTP/HTML signatures
  • Smaller signatures that download more quickly, and more frequent updates of signature data from Symantec Security Response
  • New signatures to detect ICMP Ping and SYN floods
All customers will receive this update as part of their regular LiveUpdate download schedule, or you can choose to run LiveUpdate now to install this update immediately.  Norton Internet Security 4.1 or Norton AntiVirus 11.1 must be installed first before this update can be installed. Ryan

Re: Vulnerability Protection 3.0 has been posted

Two items that may need looking into:

1)  I ran Live Update and got the 3.0 engine.  No problems.  After the required Restart I ran Live Update again and got new Vulnerability Protection signatures.  I then Restarted again and ran LiveUpdate again and ONCE AGAIN got new Vulnerability Protection signatures.  So possibly the test for deciding whether you already have the latest signatures is not working, at least for an immediate retry like this.

2)  After the above, I Restarted again.  This time I checked the Console and found some error messages where thrown in the Console Log.:

3/26/10 1:46:12 PM com.symantec.symdaemon[47] Fri Mar 26 13:46:12 localhost Symantec Daemon[47] <Error>: An error occured loading the signatures for Vulnerability Protection (Unknown error: -8).

3/26/10 1:46:12 PM Symantec Daemon[47] An error occured loading the signatures for Vulnerability Protection (Unknown error: -8).

3/26/10 1:46:13 PM kernel Could not initialize the Vulnerability Protection signatures (-8). Your computer is not fully protected.

A fourth message, with the same time stamp as the last of the above error messages, said that new Vulnerability Protection signatures had been loaded successfully:

3/26/10 1:46:13 PM kernel Symantec Vulnerability Protection loaded new signatures successfully.

After the above I Restarted again, and this time only the success message was thrown to the Console Log.

This is on a PowerBook G4 laptop running Mac OS X 10.5.8.

Re: Vulnerability Protection 3.0 has been posted

I think what has happened is that you got caught in the crossfire of a problem that we're working with the LiveUpdate publishing team to resolve. It looks like the old Vulnerability Protection signatures are still available.

I'll post back here with some progress. We're trying to get the old signatures removed from the LiveUpdate servers.

Re: Vulnerability Protection 3.0 has been posted

I got the new Vulnerability signatures via Live Update this evening and there were no error messages thrown to the Console on the next restart, so it appears this issue has been resolved.
