"Report Site" Greyed Out

Hi, folks,

I visited a Web Site which looked suspicious and so I wanted to Submit it to symantec so they could analyse it, so I clicked on the "Norton" on the Norton Tool Bar to submit it.  However, the "Report [Web] Site" was greyed out so was un-able to do so; just wondering why this is, and have any other customers come across this?

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hi Floating_Red,

The only time that I see this is when a site has already been rated as UNSAFE by Norton Safe Web.

Is that the situation you are experiencing?

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hello, Mr Phil_D,

The Web Site in question has a Green Check Mark in the Tool Bar, however, when I went to the Norton Safe Web Web Site, it was Un-Tested.  Hope this helps.

P.S.: If a Web Site was already marked as Un-Safe, I would tend not to Repot that Web Site.  ;)

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

That is interesting.

When I visit an "Untested site" I still have the option to "Report Site".

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Yes, I am also able to submit Un-Tested Web Sites, and this is the first one I've come across in Norton 2010 Products that the "Report Site" has been dis-abled...

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hello Red and Phil

I don't have win 7 or NIS, but is it possible that IE smart screen might be playing some role in this problem? Just an idea I came up with.  If it is a bad site which has malware on it, is it possible that the malware is purposely blocking the submit to Norton so that it can't be caught or made harder to catch it?

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

floplot, interesting approach.  I guess the next question should be if Floating_Red has IE Smart Screen enabled or not.  If not, then I would think it is a non-player.  If it is enabled, then Red should disable it and see if the results change.

.

Sorry if I am over simplifying this, or if I got lost along the way.

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hello yank

I think I am trying to raise 2 points actually, now that you have mentioned it.

1. If Floating Red has IE Smart Screen enabled and if that might be causing the problem. or

2. If there is malware on that site, could the malware be causing the submit to Symantec to be greyed out so that it can't be sent to Symantec and therefore make it harder to catch. Have the malware writers discovered a way to defeat that method possibly? Don't know how this could be tested or if it's even possible that it could be done.I do know that the malware writers are always trying to be a step ahead. Have they found something like blocking sites that clean up malware and doing something similar to block that submit part? I know this is all speculation and a wild one even.......

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hi Floplot,

I won't say anything is impossible but I would think that the website would not be able to block this unless the computer itself had gotten infected.

I could be wrong but I don't think that is likely.

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hi, people,

Thanks for all your views on this.  My personal view is that something in the Web Site is disabling this feature in Norton and I think this is a serious problem which symantec needs to investigate. If any symantec Emloyees wish to comment on this, it would be most-welcomed.

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hi Floating_Red,

I have flagged the moderator to bring this to Symantec's attention.

I'm sure they will want you to provide the URL via PM when someone responds. Please do NOT post the URL in the forum though since you think this is a dangerous website.

Also, please send me the URL in PM so I can check on my test computer and see if I get the same thing.

Thanks very much

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hello Allen

Please let me know if you find anything also on that website that could be causing the greying out. This is what I had mentioned in my post. If there is malware on the website, could it cause the observation that Red is seeing.? I had also mentioned the possibility that perhaps the Smart Screen might be interferring if Red uses the Smart Screen.

Red, do you use the Smart Screen?

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hello, floplot,

The SmartScreen wouldn't have anything to do with it as this is the first time I've seen this happening in Norton 2010 Products.  The last time I saw this, was in Norton 2008 Products. If there is any evidence to prove that SmartScreen is interfering with Norton Report Site, then please post them.  I still think there is Threats on that Web Site that is disabling the "Report Site" on the Norton Tool Bar.  Thanks for your comments.

Re: "Report Site" Greyed Out

Hi, All,

First of all, thanks for replying.

Secondly, the Web Site in question appears to no longer exist, and, therefore, I cannot send the U.R.L., but if I come across any other, I'll be sure to let the Community know.
