NIS2011 password logins

Hi

I have a problem...I have one website with three different passwords for 3 different areas of the website...how do I save each in NIS for the 3 different areas?is it possible...as NIS changes the password to the main password or vice a versa...in general it just gets confusing.Should I just bite the bullet and use one password for all areas?...

Plus I have noticed it does go from asking to saving the password just a little to quick that I am not sure if it has saved or not.

Thanks

Re: NIS2011 password logins

Or you could bite the bullet and let NIS not handle the login for the site.

Re: NIS2011 password logins

Hello Mo,

Does it have a username/password combination on all three pages?

Re: NIS2011 password logins

Yes Tim all three...can I keep the same username but different passwords?

"Or you could bite the bullet and let NIS not handle the login for the site"

Not an option as I like NIS for being able to save passwords only on sites I use regularly and this is one of them

Hi Mo,

I am not 100% sure on this one so let's let Tim provide the "official" answer but my thinking is this. If the domain is the same (which I'm sure it must be) then I believe that if you have the same username and update the password for one of the logins, it will update all 3 at the same time.

With a different username in each of the 3 areas it should work for sure but I really don't think it will when the username is the same.

Tim, would you agree?

Mo, this should be pretty easy to test. What happens when you change the password for one of the three and then manually enter the password and NIS asks if you want to update it? Does NIS then enter this new password for the other two areas? E.g., if so, at that point you should get an incorrect password reported by the website since NIS would have probably entered the "new" one.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Re: NIS2011 password logins

Yes It does...If I fill in one NIS asks to update it and replaces it with the new password...I am more savvy now and say no for the reason you said I must say you worded that reply wonderfully!

Can NIS be configured to save all 3 independantly?Same name different Passwords on the same site.

I think I can enter the site through the 3 different areas instead of the main login page that is what I have been doing...maybe that's where I have been going wrong? I will go and test my theory. Thanks again for your help.

Sad to say it still changes the logins and I can not set them up individually.I will wait and see what Tim says. Thanks

Re: NIS2011 password logins

Hi allen. Even with different usernames, if you visit a site ie google mail, it will pull up the last used username. If you want to change the username, you would have to select it manually from the list. However, this will exit the current site and go to the site stored to log in. For example, lets say I have two googlemail accounts. I last logged in with account name, lets say accounta. When I visit googlemail.com, it will prefill the details for accounta. To get to accountb, you would have to select that username from the list of usernames on safe web. However, this will reload googlemail.com and go back to gmail main page. What I'm saying if one login depends on the previous, refreshing the page might make it log out or do something unintended.

Re: NIS2011 password logins

Ps Norton will consider different password to the same username as a modification. For example if you enter a site but you entered the wrong password and store it. If you correct the login password, Norton will prompt you if you want to replace the existing password. In this case its a good thing.

That is essentially what I said.

I am almost certain this is controlled by domain so if the domain is the same, then 3 different accounts with the same username would be considered a single account.

If you enter the site through 3 different areas, isn't the domain still the same?

When you think about it, NIS would have no way of knowing that the same username is actually a different account when the URL domain is still exactly the same.

Have you thought about creating 3 different usernames for the 3 areas? That should definitely work. I think it is going to be either that or using the same password for all 3.

Another indicator is when you navigate to any of the 3 login pages, NIS probably just autofills without giving you a choice of accounts, correct? Or if you click on ID safe at the top of your browser, then select "Available logins for this page", it just shows one login, correct?

Best wishes.

Re: NIS2011 password logins

What you can do is either a. let Norton ignore this site all together or b. Store the individual password as seperate usernames and when the time comes to fill in the section, just change the username or use copy and paste to enter password. Unless each login is on a different domain, b won't work. I've never heard of a triple login site. I've only encounter single login sites.

Yes that is the way it is happening...It sounds like it is not possible to save all 3.Same domain...just 3 different areas of the one site.

I wanted to keep them separate but if that is not possible because NIS saves them as one individual account. I can always fill them in manually....now the next question would be how to stop NIS auto filling the two extra logins?Thankfully I do not go to the other parts of the site that often.

Re: NIS2011 password logins

I think you can add site to the exclusion list. This will make nis ignore the site completely. Or b. You can just change the password manually, letting Norton filling in the username. Just say on to replace the password.

I agree on the second part but if you add the site to the exclusion list then none of the 3 will get filled in.

Hi Mo,

If you mean will it be possible to have 3 different usernames with different passwords on the same URL then only Symantec would be able to answer that. In order to accomplish that they would have to probably look at the entire URL address and not just the domain. This should be "possible" but I have no idea if they are planning to add something like that.

Perhaps you can suggest it in the Norton Ideas Forum?

Best wishes.
