The Norton Internet Security Service failed to start....

I installed Norton Internet Security 2011 over the older 2010.  I checked my event log and noticed that every time I log in, I get an error:  Event 7000 - The Norton Internet Security service failed to start due to the following error:  The system cannot find the path specified.

I checked Services and saw two listings for Norton Internet Security.  On one, under Status, the column was empty, but said Automatic.  The version was 16.0.0.125.  The other one. under Status, it said Started, then Automatic.  This version was 18.1.0.37.

It looks like some older version is still there?  What needs to be done to get rid of the older version?

Thanks!

Cody

Re: The Norton Internet Security Service failed to start....

Hi Cody:

It does sound like a mixup in there.  You will need to uninstall 2011 via add/remove.  Reboot.  Run the removal tool.  Reboot.  Reinstall 2011, reboot and then click on support>subscription status. Then run liveupdate until done.

Before you begin, save the downloads to your desktop and then disable your internet connection until done.

Re: The Norton Internet Security Service failed to start....

Hi Cody,

It is very strange too because you mentioned version 16.0.0.125 which is NIS 2009, not 2010.

Definitely you need to run the Norton removal tool.

Best wishes.

Re: The Norton Internet Security Service failed to start....

Hello delphium and Allen,

Using the removal tool, I removed everything, reinstalled NIS 2010, then upograded to NIS 2011.  Now I have another problem:

In my Admin Account, I checked the NIS 2011 Main Menu.  The following things were grayed out:

Anti-Virus

SONAR Protection

Smart Firewall

Intrusion Prevention

Browser Protection

Showing they are "ON", but I do not have any rights as an Administrator.

I went into Settings and the following things were grayed out:

COMPUTER

Intrusion Prevention - grayed out

Notifications - grayed out

Smart Firewall - grayed out

Block all Network Traffic - grayed out

NETWORK SETTINGS:

Browser Protection - grayed out

Miscellaneous Settings Product Security - grayed out

Non-Admins Access to Settings - grayed out (OFF)

Please let me know what's might be going on now?

Thanks,

Cody

Re: The Norton Internet Security Service failed to start....

This is what I'll do.

  1. Download the Norton 2011 file and the norton removal tool: (http://www.norton.com/nrt). Also, look for your Norton key, which is located in my documents (called just documents in Win7)-->Symantec-->Norton Internet Security key.txt . You can also find your key in my Norton account (https://www.mynortonaccount.com/amsweb/default.do).  STOP at this step if you cannot find your key.
  2.  Remove all NIS2011 using add or remove, select remove all data.  Then reboot.   After that run the Norton removal tool.
  3. Reboot. Run the Norton removal tool AGAIN. Reboot
  4. Just to be safe, boot into safe mode (shut down and as soon as you see bios, tap f8 repeatedly.  In the menu that come up, select boot into safe mode.  Close all windows that appear.
  5. Run the removal tool. Close all browser window that appears. Reboot
  6. When you are in normal mode, search for "Norton" and delete all files that appear.
  7. Reboot
  8. Install Norton.  It will now ask for an activation key.  Enter the activation key you wrote down in step 1.  Connect to the internet and activate your Norton product.

It may seem an overkill but this is the only way to ensure all traces of Norton product is gone from your PC.

Re: The Norton Internet Security Service failed to start....

Hi Cody,

Just to be sure, when you click on Settings from the main NIS window do you have anything there other than Web Settings > Identity Safe? If you try to click on the button next to say Antivirus does it say "you need to be an administrator to perform this action"?

Are you able to check from a second administrator account to make sure there is no problem with the user account itself?

Otherwise you probably do need to use the removal tool as Tywin7 outlined but a couple of things to add:

1. If you use Identity Safe please be sure to back it up by following the procedure here. Once you have reinstalled NIS you can restore your Identity Safe data through Web Settings > Restore Identity Safe Data.

2. Your product key should be picked up automatically even after rusing the removal tool but if there is a problem you can enter it manually.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

  1. Back up any identity safe data:

Hi Tywin7,

Images are great but they are also long. I linked to a document which clearly outlines how to back up Identity safe.

Best wishes.
