Time is tracking while logged off...

Hi,

I'm a brand new user of Norton Online Family - Premier and have a question about the time tracking feature.

I set up two Standard accounts on my Windows 7 PC and put time restrictions as well as time limits on each.  Both children used their accounts last night (Tues) before 10 PM.  I shut off the PC at around 10:30 PM.  This morning (Wed) I logged onto onlinefamily.norton.com from a different computer and the time tracking feature shows that one account tracked 4 hours today (Wed) and the other account tracked 2 hours today (Wed).  Was wondering how this could be as the PC was actually powered off since 10:30PM last night?  Am I missing something?  LOL!

Thanks!

Re: Time is tracking while logged off...

Hi Elmont,

You mentioned "time tracking feature shows that one account tracked 4 hours", I assume you saw that at Activity -> Time, right?

Could you check the activities that are recorded during these 4 hours at Activity -> Web?  What kind of websites are accessed? Are they browsed by your children?

Do all the PCs have correct Time setup at Start/Control Panel/Date and Time?

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks Katie

Re: Time is tracking while logged off...

Hi,

Thank you for your reply!

Here's some more info:  The last recorded web activity recorded for Brittany (Activity>Web) was at 8PM Tuesday 11/16/2010.  Her last few visited websites were Foopets.com,  Dictionary.com, Google.com, and Chickensmoothie.com.  The PC was completely powered down by me at around 10:30PM Tuesday 11/16/2010.  Brittany's time settings are set for 2 hours per day both weekdays and weekends between 6AM and 9PM.

This morning, at work, I logged onto the website to look at and adjust a few settings, as there were issues with embedded pictures being blocked by Safety Minder at FooPets.com and I wanted to resolve this somehow.  (which I apparently can't without allow ALL Social Networking sites, ugh)   Anyway, while I was doing this the PC that the kids use is still completely powered down.  I noticed that there was 4.5 hours of time tracked (Activity>Time) for Brittany today, Wednesday 11/17/2010 despite the fact that the PC was completely powered down and there was no recorded activity (Activity>Web and Activity>All Activity).

There is only one Windows 7 PC that the girls use.  There are no other PCs in the house.  This PC is also running Norton NIS 2011.

I thought of the PC clock time as well, but alas it is set up correctly with the right time and date.

Last night I did change the Settings>Time a few different times, and I am wondering if things got confused as a result.  Other than that I don't have any ideas.  I will monitor this obviously and see if this is an isolated incident or a repeatable problem.  No sense in diving into the code and scripts until we can have the problem repeat itself.   Of course if there's something that is obvious that I'm doing wrong, please let me know!   :)

Thanks

Re: Time is tracking while logged off...

Elmont,

Thanks for the update.  Could you post a screen shot of the Activity Time where it shows there was 4.5 hours of time tracked?

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks Katie

Re: Time is tracking while logged off...

Hi,

Three screenshots below:  1) Activity>Time   2) Activity>All Activity  3) Settings>Time

The one activity entry on Wednesday 10/17/2010 was me checking things out after I discovered those mysterious 4.5 hours had been tracked.   There was absolutely no other activity on the day it reported 4.5 hours and the PC was completely powered off.  Also, the settings screenshot is current - I originally had set it up for 4 or 6 hours per day - can't remember which...

Re: Time is tracking while logged off...

Hi,

Take a look below at the screenshot I just pulled at 8:35PM Thursday 11/18/2010.  You'll notice on the left under the weekly view there is time recorded for tomorrow (Friday) already.  Then on the right the time in the monthly view time is recorded on for Today only (Thursday).  How can this be?

Inidentally, I validated the time once again on the PC to make sure it was correct.  Any ideas?

Also, why is the week total and the month total different.  I just signed up for this on Tuesday so they should be the same.  I really think this program has great value over others, but unless we can figure this out, I'm afraid that I'll have to use another program to track time.  I hope I'm just missing something obvious here.

Thanks

Interesting...    I just received an email saying Safety Minder has been disabled.  I logged on it is not disabled.  Not sure what's going on here...

Re: Time is tracking while logged off...

OK...  so now my other daughter's account was locked because she logged in after her curfew....yet she still is requesting to access blocked websites.  If it's locked how can she still send me requests?  I know this is not related to the original post, but there's a lot of stuff going on here that I really don't understand and I'm less than 3 days into having this service.  What am I doing wrong?  :)

Re: Time is tracking while logged off...

Hi,

Unfortunately I needed to uninstall NOF, cancel the Premier subscription, and request a refund.

Norton Online Family shows tremendous promise and I look forward to a more mature product offering in the future.  I'll check back in a year and give it another try, but for now I will be moving on to another program.

In years past, I walked away from Norton products, but in 2009 I went back to NIS 2009 - and it is a fantastic product due to the entire platform being revamped, code being cleaned up, and it becoming an unobtrusive program with a very small footprint.  I'm hoping that as Norton Online Family matures, I'll see the same results with what you've done with NIS.

Thank you for your time and good luck!

Elmont

Re: Time is tracking while logged off...

Hi Elmont,

You mentioned: "after her curfew....yet she still is requesting to access blocked websites"

When a child logs onto the PC during the curfew time, the child would receive a message saying there are 60 seconds left.  After 60 seconds, the child is allowed to log back to the PC for another 60 seconds to finish whatever he/she was doing.  These behaviors can be repeated for three times,  so the child gets about extra 6 minutes, then he/she wouldn't be able to log back to the PC without the email address and password for the Norton Online Family account.  So that could be the reason that you received a request during curfew time, which works as designed.

For your original time issue, we suspect the PC time is not set correctly or a time synchronizing program is installed on the PC somehow and it gets incorrect time.  I would be more than happy to setup a remote desktop access and work together with you on this.  You're welcome to send me a private message or an email for details.  You can find my email address at http://community.norton.com/norton/profile?user.id=15038

Thanks,

Katie
