Norton Internet Security, Settings, AntiVirus and SONAR Exclusions Settings

Reference:  AntiVirus and SONAR Exclusions Settings

Why is "system volume information" excluded from scanning?  To get full scanning benefits, why wouldn't this be automatically included?

Thanks,

Cody

Re: Norton Internet Security, Settings, AntiVirus and SONAR Exclusions Settings

Hi Cody,

The System Volume Information is not included by default in the scanning for a couple of reasons:

1. Anything in the System Volume Information cannot harm your computer, unless you do a system restore using that infected restore point.

2. Norton would not be allowed by the Windows OS to make changes there anyway. In fact there would be no way to safely do so since a removal of a threat there would prevent that restore point from being usable.

3. For an infection to be present in a restore point would mean that you had an active infection at some point which then got backed up in a restore point. Once the active infection is dealt with (removed) then it is typically advised to disable system restore, reboot, reenable system restore and create a fresh restore point. This would then remove any dormant infection from your restore point.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: Norton Internet Security, Settings, AntiVirus and SONAR Exclusions Settings

Hi Cody,

System Volume Information is the repository for your System Restore points.  There are many really, really good reasons for not scanning the SVI:

  1. For the sake of the integrity of your restore points, Windows prevents these files from being modified, so if a virus were found it could not be removed, anyway.
  2. Any attempt to repair an SVI file can lead to corruption of the restore point, making it unusable - and it is always better to have a viable restore point, even if it is infected, than no recovery option at all.
  3. Viruses contained in a restore point cannot run unless you restore your computer to that recovery point, at which time Auto-Protect will detect the infected file and deal with it.  Therefore malware poses no danger while residing in SVI, but will be removed if and when the need arises from a restore operation.
  4. Scanning the SVI is very time consuming, and as explained above, there is little to be gained.

Hi SendOfJive,

LOL, same time once again. Happy to see our responses are nearly identical, as usual!

Re: Norton Internet Security, Settings, AntiVirus and SONAR Exclusions Settings

Hello SendOfJive and Allen,

It looks like my son deleted the system volume information from the exclusions settings.  Does this pose a problem?  Can I get it back without reinstalling NIS?

Thanks,

Cody

Hi Cody,

Yes, you can get it back. Go to Settings > Computer Settings > AntiVirus and SONAR Exclusions and click on the Configure button next to Items to Exclude from Scans. Then click Add and type in the following: \System Volume Information\ in the box provided. Then click OK and OK again.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Uncanny, isn't it!

Note to Cody: be sure to include the backslash \ (barely visible in AllenM's post) before and after the words System Volume Information.
