Updates vs. Virus Detection

When av-test.org pitted major AV programs against over 1 million malware samples, Norton 2009 detected 98.7% of viruses and 95.4 of adware/spyware, well in the middle of the pack. However, an interesting fact was that Norton was issued a total of 6,202 updates over 4 weeks, while Kaspersky had 692 updates, the second most.

How come Norton recieves more updates...way more, but detection is still middle of the pack?

Re: Updates vs. Virus Detection

More updates doesn't have to mean better protection.

Malware is being smart these days.

for example.

Team A shoots 25 times on the goal and scores 1

Team B scores 10 times on goals but scores 8 .

Well does that mean that the 5-15 minute updates that Symantec is marketing are essentially useless? Maybe Symantec should work on heruistics and expand Insight?

Um your wrong. With Heuristics on High Norton scores 99%. You need to read the August 08 report which test NAV 09. If you go to AV Comparitvies you will see. I do not trust av-test.org.Message Edited by Dieselman743 on 10-12-2008 04:17 PM
Real Time Protection = NIS 2009 + NATBehavior Analysis = ThreatfireOn Demand = MBAM

No That's not what iit says. You can have 1 signature update every 10 minutes otr 60 sigs update every day. That depends. It is saying that Symantec learns from the past and a faster detection is easier when you update faster

Well with the Highest settings it is toward the front of the pack. Why not av-test?
