I found this in my recent history logs this morning, when I went to click the more details button it was grayed out??? Any Ideas what this means. The silent mode is on its default setting which is off.Is it the same thing?Earlier in the morning in Norton tamper protection there was windows\system32\mrt.exe at a medium risk,I have just installed Malwarebytes is that part of it.I know full of questions.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

Hi Stu/All

Don't worry about the last of my questions as I freak at a lot of stuff and try to put it all in one box I.E. Give you guys as much info as I can.(which may or may not be related!)Just the light silent mode business I never touch the silent mode button and having this entered twice in my recent history logs ,has me guessing as its not in the help files of NIS2009.So any help from the powers that be would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

Hi,

MRT.exe located in %system% is a part of Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Why Norton has flagged it as a medium risk I cannot say. Probably it is because of the behaviour of the process but in worst case (but less likely) that the integrity of the file itself has been compromised.

Thanks jAW

I think on the same morning the little Norton icon in the tray disappeared for a few seconds I was in the event viewer at the time???(windows event viewer)Any way I won't confuse this post and stick to the main question I had asked.Thank you for shedding some light on the other question much appreciated for a beginner.

Cheers Mo

Norton picked up MRT.exe as attacking Norton, when i run malwarebytes it says the same thing.but as far as I know I have not used mrt.exe or would know how to use it

Hi,

The tool should run automatically once a month as a part of the windows update. You can run it manually if you want to but it is usually not needed.

Hi jAW

I know this is off subject but would the once a month running of mrt also include a inbound tcp on port 1254 to the mmc(microsoft management console)I understand that I may be confusing a few things so I understand if you don't know what I'm on about.Sheep! I don't even know what I'm on about LOL

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

mo,

The 2009 products have a feature called "Full Screen Detection".  This feature will automatically turn on "Light Silent Mode" while the full screen application is running (such as Internet Explorer [hit F11], Windows Media Player, remote desktop in my case for the screen shot above, etc).  NIS/NAV will automatically turn this off once the application exits Full Screen mode.  You can enable or disable this functionality via Settings / Miscellaneous / Slient Mode and toggle "Full Screen Detection".

The difference between this "Light" version of silent mode, and manual silent mode (i.e. from the tray icon) is most of our background tasks are suppressed in the "Light" version, instead of all of them when you explicitly tell the product to enter Silent Mode.

NIS will log an event each time it enters or exits silent mode.  You can see all these events in security history by selecting "Full History" and then search for "silent".

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

MikeO,

I'm on my 3rd day of evaluating NIS-2009 trial version and just sent a similar "Light Silent Mode" question to Norton Support via email.  Then, I Googled and found this message and joined the User's Forum.  I should have Googled first and joined the Forum first!

However, my specific question dealt with clearing the History log entries.  I have cleared all the individual History logs (firewall, intrusions, etc.) but "Recent History" and "Full History" still contain the "Light Silent Mode" and "Manual Silent mode" entries.  ALL other entries are gone, but the Silent Mode entries refuse to die!   I'm already cluttered with 74 entries:  37 "on" entries and 37 "off" entries!

Do you know how to totally clear or purge the Recent and Full history logs?  I've found the Norton "Logs" files in Application Data, but I don't know if renaming a .dat file in Safe mode will cause huge problems when I reboot.  Hope there's an easier and less risky way to clear out all history entries.

I'm sure I'll have more questions during my trial period, and plan on searching this forum first.

When I get a response from Norton Support, if it answers my question,  I'll post it here.

Thanks,

Marty

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

Hi Marty,

Currently we do not have an option to clear silent mode entries from history. Symantec is working on it and may be in the next build we may get that option.

Hi Vineeth,

Thanks for the quick reply.  Not being able to totally clear History is more of a nuisance than really a problem. So far, I like NIS-2009, but I've just started playing with it.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

I heard back from Norton Tech Support via email.  The response reminded me why I stopped using NAV several years ago.  I'll just say that "you get what you pay for".  I paid nothing for the tech support, and that's what the answer was worth.

However, I still like the way NIS-2009 is performing. With a good product, not much Tech Support may be needed.

The Silent Mode history log can easily be deleted while booted in safe mode. All Silent Mode entries are deleted from the Full History and Recent History logs.  However, the next time you use Silent Mode,  a new log file is generated with more "sticky" entries that show up in the history logs.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

=) symantec support has generally worked for me.

As for deleting silent mode entries in safe mode....do you just boot in safe mode, logon, and turn off? And what do you mean by your last sentence? Do you mean that silent mode entries will be gone from full and recent but silent mode logs are always kept under silent mode and cannot be currently cleared?

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

TechOutsider,

Boot in safe mode and delete or rename (safer than deleting) the file "Smode.dat".  Search using Windows Explorer to find the file on your PC.  It's pretty well buried in Documents and Settings - All Users - Application Data - Norton ....

After deleting Smode.dat the entries will no longer appear in Full and Recent.  However, if you activate Silent Mode or Full Screen Detection, NIS will start a new log file that cannot be currently cleared, so the entries will again appear in Full and Recent.  In other words, the entries are gone until you use Silent Mode again.  Each time Silent is activated, the log will grow longer.  I haven't tried making Smode.dat Read Only while in Safe Mode; don't know what that might do.

I turned off Silent and Full Screen, deleted Smode.dat, so in my case, the Silent entries will not reappear.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

But the Light silent Mode that triggers from the full screen detect is great if you play full screen games. NIS causes even less impact on performance than usual (which is neglible anyway lol). It will not do scans or updates while you're in the game and that is a great new feature.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

Dch48,

I turn off automatic updates and "idle time" scans.  I want to be looking at the screen when I "press the trigger".  So, for me, the Silent Mode feature doesn't really matter. However, if you have NIS scanning and updating in the background, I agree that it's definitely a beneficial feature.

The high degree of customization offered by NIS makes it a great program to handle the variety of user preferences.

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

I did as suggested. I entered safe mode, dug my way deep to the log file (Smode) and deleted it. But, when I restarted and checked the Norton history log, everything was still logged.

Did I miss something here.

Could a Norton Mod help us out here and let us know which .dat file will allow us to clear or delete the recent and full history logs?

Thanks

Re: Light silent mode turned off status completed x2 ?????

Doug, welcome to the Forum,

This message was specifically about removing "Silent Mode" Security History logs.  It wasn't about removing Recent and Full History logs.

The Recent and Full History logs capture the entries from all the other logs. When you scroll thru the Security log files, with the exception of Recent History and Full History, there is a Clear Log option.  After you delete all the individual logs with the Clear Log option,  the Recent/Full history logs will be empty. Only the "Silent Mode" entries must be removed in safe mode.

You should not delete the Quarantine log files unless you are 100% sure that you will never want to restore the quarantined item. If Quarantine entries are deleted from history, you can not restore the quarantined item.  Resolved Security Risk logs provide some good information and probably should not be deleted.  And, the UNResolved Security Risk log is telling you that you have to decide what to do and take action.

A single "clear ALL logs" button would be nice, but NIS programmers probably realized that it would be too easy to accidentally zap critical logs (like Quarantine), so each individual log has to be cleared. Probably a wise decision!
