My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

Hi All

I turned on my PC this morning and the first thing that popped up was an Adobe flash player update,I clicked out of this once all the other pop ups appeared.NIS then appeared in the tray with its green check mark.BUT then windows popped up saying my security was switched off and NIS popped up with I had turned off the firewall??

The green check is on the icon BUT there is no way I can open Norton at all...no  right click option.

Any ideas...I can still access the net from this computer but the red windows shield is still showing. I scanned with MBAM nothing is showing.

XP service pack 3 all updates NIS2012.

Cheers Mo Windows 7 64 bit, NIS2013

Hi,
Hope you didn't allow any 'extra' programs to install while you did that update.

I'd suggest running the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20110217171332EN

to get a clean copy of the program on your computer

Be sure to save your identity safe data BEFORE you do anything else.

Also, run live update after the reinstall to be sure you have all of the updates downloaded and installed.

Reboot and let us know how it goes

Re: My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

That's the thing,I did not update adobe. It was the first pop up followed by the windows security alert then the Norton alert then I panicked a little and did a mbam scan.

I won't even think about removing and reinstalling NIS, due to my not fully comprehending the issue with the online/offline vault.

I have not tried a reboot as yet,I may do this now and see if there was some glicth/bad timing with the adobe update and Nis loading on my computer. If I don't make it back to the forum I may have some issues...

Re: My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

I rebooted and after another brief windows red sheild, then NIS appearing with the red X, all seems to be working...don't ask me what happened? all I know now is NIS has the green check,it has the right click option and I can open up the main  GUI

I looked in recent history and it shows everything starting up (8.28) ok ....then for some reason the firewall was switched off at 8.30 then it reads....

Firewall enable changed,

Start up mode has been set to manual,

silent mode turned off,

quite silent mode is turned off,

Firewall setting current protection state changed,

Firewall setting Protection start up state changed,

Internet security has been turned off,

Browser protection for Internet explorer has been disabled,

browser protection for Firefox has been disabled,

Down load advisor turned off Then it has intrusion prevention monitoring and next on the list it says intrusion prevention is switched off??

What happened in the space of 23 seconds? because all that I wrote above was from 8.30 27  to 8.30 50 in amongst this it was reported anti spam statistics were sent.

I now wonder is my PC safe...how does the firewall get stopped without me stopping it?

Hi mo,

Just for thought ...

If you were to uninstall/reinstall your 2012, there wouldn't be an online vault issue, like there is in 2013 (version 20). There's an option in 2012 if a person wants to put his data online, but most of us keep it local.

I'm running NIS 2012 like you and my ID Safe is local.

Hi mo,

Have you run Norton Autofix to check your installation and fix possible errors.

How many days are left on your subscription?

The History entries that you saw typically only occur when Norton shuts the product down when the subscription expires. It took 15 seconds to shut the product down when the data below was originally captured:

Re: My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

elsewhere,

Strange you should mention that as when I started FF that was what it said where "safe web" usually sits...that the license had expired in grey lettering with ! ...I have 133 days left so it should not have been an issue.

I am wondering because the Adobe Flash updater came up before NIS had fully loaded on my computer ,did that cause a corruption in NIS and force it to shut down?

Hi Ed, I have not done that yet as all seems to be running smoothly.

Re: My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

Hi mo

Check to see if there is an entry relating to this event in the 'Norton Error Reporting' section of the Security History log. If there is, copy and paste the 'Module Name' listed in that entry into your next post and we'll see if the description of that file gives us any further information.

PS Looks like you need to update your signature to NIS2012!

Re: My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

Hello mo

Have you checked the time and date on your computer? Are there any errors having to do with time? It's also possible that your Cmos battery may be dying.

Check to see if it continues to keep time  ok now. If there are any further problems with time, then it might have something to do with your Cmos battery.

Hi mo

With regards to the Norton Error Reporting Module Names that you provided earlier:

Module NameDescriptionNPCTRAYNorton Protection Center System TrayCLTLMS

Symantec Shared Component

Generally, Norton Errors are retrospective in nature and are typically reported silently; normally you wouldn't notice them until after they'd been reported in your Security History log.

The 'NPCTRAY' error typically means that you would no longer be able to open the NIS interface in your current Windows session. This can be fixed by logging off and logging back on to your Windows user account (or in a worst case scenario, rebooting your computer).

The 'CLTLMS' error isn't an error that I've encountered before. While the description of this file indicates that this is a 'Symantec Shared Component', the naming convention of the file (CLT*) suggests that it is a component of Norton's Consumer Licensing Technologies that deals with Product activation and the like.

Both of the above Norton errors lend support to the temporary NIS product expiry shutdown assessment that we discussed earlier.

Given this, and in relation to your post above, can you clarify what you ran and could you provide us with some more details about the error that you received when 'connecting'?

Thanks

Re: My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

Sorry for taking so long to answer,The error I mentioned was in relation to connecting to the Windows Time server. It failed the first time I tried so I changed the time server and it worked the 2nd time around.

Just for interests sake the Adobe flash notification came up again, and this time all went smoothly,no windows warning ,no NIS shut down and I managed to install the update without an issue.

Re: My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

I have had this identical problem twice in the last few weeks.     Both times it was when Adobe Flash Player offered an update.  I bypassed the update.  The first time I recreated my C drive using Ghost.   This time I am trying to read up on the problem.    the automatic NIS check tool says there is no problem,   but the red X is on the icon.

Does the Norton removal and reloading tool remove all Norton products?    I have several installed, and I dont want to go through the reloading process.

Re: My NIS 2012 has stopped working..

I just rebooted the machine, as I did not want t o go through the whole uninstall and reinstall process. It booted up normally and NIS loaded ok after the reboot. This was after the first scenario when NIS2012  version 19.9.0.9 shut down and the windows red sheild appeared...I just rebooted.

The 2nd time the adobe update popped up all went well.

There is another post somewhere about the Red X  happening with NIS I am not sure if it is the same issue as mine.

What happened with your PC?

Hi diogenes,

I believe you are referring to the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool. This tool does remove the other Norton products also. You would have to reinstall them manually if using this tool. It uninstalls your security product, this thread is about NIS 2012, and reinstalls the latest version of your product which would be NIS 2013 (version 20).

If you don't want your other Norton products uninstalled, and are not ready for the current version of NIS, you could try an uninstall/reinstall of NIS 2012.

If you want to give this a go, follow this outline:

Backup/Export your Identity Safe if you use that feature.

Download the Norton Removal Tool  http://www.norton.com/nrt

Download a fresh copy of NIS 2012  http://www.norton.com/nis12

Uninstall NIS 2012 from Control Panel.

Reboot.

Run the Norton Removal Tool.

Reboot.

Run the NIS 2012 installer you just downloaded.

Manually run liveupdate as many times as necessary, rebooting whenever prompted. Continue to run liveupdate until there are no updates left.

Check - Support > About to see that you are at version 19.9.0.9.

Import Identity Safe data.

After you're set back up, go into settings and disable Automatic Download of New Version.

Settings > Computer > Updates > Automatic Download of New Version > move slider to Off position > click Apply.

Hi Ed,

I thought I'd let you know that the Norton Removal Tool will ask you to manually uninstall other Norton products before running NRT.
