Re: Norton Internet Security 2009: "(null)" Update

That's strange it looks like a GUI bug. But I'm not sure if it is one.

I will call one of the employees for this

Re: Norton Internet Security 2009: "(null)" Update

Just got it again and everytime I run Manual Norton LiveUpdate.  But no Pulse Updates.  N.I.S. appears not to be Updating.  Anyone got any ideas how to Solve this?  16.1.0.33 is not Updating.Message Edited by Floating_Red on 11-22-2008 03:20 PM

Re: Norton Internet Security 2009: "(null)" Update

Clearly, until an actual technician told us what this means, we won't know for certain (that's just me stating the obvious, duh).

However, my guess would be that a "null" update is an update designed not to put something into the signature file but to nullify some earlier entry, process, or update.  If nothing went into the system, but was instead removed from the system as a result, that might produce the "failed" entry you got.

Re: Norton Internet Security 2009: "(null)" Update

Red, would you launch about 4 to 6 Live Updates manually and report back on the results, please?

There is also a process to cleanse Live Update history and sig files in order to make it start fresh.  Does anyone here remember what that is?

Will do.

C.P.U. is now also at 100% and computer is lagging heavily.

You didn't launch them all at the same time, did you?  Or try to?  Did the CPU usage increase at the same time as the Live Updates?

Yuck.  Well, so much for my original theory.  I'm glad I didn't bill you for it.

My next suggestion would be to track down the process for resetting Live Update.

If I just leave the computer, it hovers at about 095%, but when I use the computer, it goes up to 100%.

C.P.U. Usage has Returned to Normal now; the High C.P.U. lasted about an hour.

Now check History and see what events coincide with that period of time.

You might also use the Event Viewer log in Windows to see what it has recorded during that period of time.

     Run>Settings>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Adminstrative Tools>Event Viewer

I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if this would allow a speed-up in your system.  Let's see what happens over the next couple of days.  Also Symantec might have some answers for us now.

Re: Norton Internet Security 2009: "(null)" Update

FR, do you have SP3?  Do you have all the recommended Windows Updates?  [btw, this would be much more useful info for the rest of us to be included in your signature instead of threat levels - it's impossible to remember every poster's system configuration.]

Could you track down and read my latest response to the "other Red" (you've been posting there so it should be easy to find)?  I think it could be useful to you.

Yes and yes.

And what Post are you referring to about this "other Red"?  Could you provide a Web Link?  Thanks!

Re: Norton Internet Security 2009: "(null)" Update

Regarding all that I said, do you have a registry cleaner/checker (like WinDoctor) with which to check your registry and windows settings?  If you don't, I'd recommend you download and try the trial version of Norton Systemworks.  I think it is one of the most useful tools I have had.  All you need is the basic version, but I don't believe that is yet available in trial version, so you might have to use the standard version for your experimenting.

If you do do this, then let me know if you have any questions about the windoctor clean-up choices.  Although I like the software, I seldom agree with Windoctor's suggested fixes.  What I like is that it gives me a list of fixes; and I almost always choose delete.  So far (ten years or more), so good.  But if you have missing DLL files it will probably not offer any fixes, so then you'll have to look at the choices I offered at the link in the post above.

Hi Floating_Red,

We fixed a number of LiveUpdate related errors in the 16.2 patch. If you see this issue happening again, please let us know. Unfortunately, we can't really discuss what caused some of the failures to occur as it ties in to the proprietary code of the software.

Thanks for your understanding!
